It was late at night, my brothers, my mother, and I had all fallen asleep in the living room watching a movie. Suddenly, my mother was awakened by the sound of our living room door jingling. Half-asleep, she instinctively moved towards the door, thinking it was my father returning home after working late in a nearby town.

Fortunately, just before opening the door, my mother managed to regain some awareness and glanced through the rectangular window of our mobile home. To her shock, she realized that it wasn’t our father standing outside but a complete stranger—a middle-aged blonde man. Peering through the window, the man claimed to have run over a cat with his car and wondered if it belonged to us.

In a display of bravery, my mom confronted him, threatening to fetch her husband and call the police. Faced with her firm stance, the man quickly fled. However, it was all a bluff. It was the mid ‘90s and we didn’t have a telephone in our house back then, and my father hadn’t returned from work yet.

Also, the next morning we checked the street and nearby area and there was no cat.

This incident remains etched in my memory as one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. During that same period, there were cases of several young women being abducted, assaulted, and even murdered in the area of Missouri where I grew up.

A terrifying “what if” of my life.

What is writer's block?

No, but seriously, I try not to give writer's block so much power. I just show up and do the work. Sometimes it's good and sometimes bad, but you cannot wait around and wait for "inspiration," or else you'd never write. At least, I wouldn't. (less)
