"Every man participating in a culture has three levels of conscious reflection: his specific ideas about things, his general beliefs and convictions, and his metaphysical dream of the world." It is the last that is the most important, because it is an understanding of the nature of reality. "The imposition of this ideational pattern upon conduct relieves us of the direful recourse to pragmatic justification." A shared metaphysical dream allows men to live together harmoniously and society can be regulated via shared understanding. This shared understanding, this metaphysical dream, should be a life-affirming and rational sentiment, neither sentimentality nor brutality, neither degenerate nor barbaric, but one that has a deep respect for conventions and forms and that links together faith and reason. Logic and measurement depend on this shared dream. "Culture is sentiment refined and measured by intellect" and the threat of cultural disintegration from barbarism "is best described as the desire of immediacy, for its aim is to dissolve the formal aspects of everything and to get at the supposititious reality behind them." It is this desire for immediacy that allows widespread degeneracy, for example the indecency of press publishing photos showing suffering, death, and atrocity. When sentiment declines into sentimentality, then the evils of relativity also arise and heroic ideals become replaced by commercialism. When heroic ideals disappear, congeniality and true friendship become replaced by transactionalism.

Chapter 2: Distinction and Hierarchy
"After man evolves his metaphysical dream and becomes capable of rational sentiment," he will recognize that the highest achievements are knowledge and virtue. In so recognizing, he will understand that there are distinctions between men; some are more capable of higher functions than others. "For the good of all, prerogative will attach to higher functions, and this will mean hierarchy." It is a deluded society that refuses to recognize the importance of distinction and hierarchy and instead seeks equality for all. Bourgeois capitalism is the guiltiest in espousing this unrealistic and destructive mass equalization, this socialism, due to a desire for complacent, materialist comfort. ...more "
