“Are you lost, son?" she asked, then pointed towards left. "The outfield is that way."
Try something new tonight, he said. Was there anyone anywhere who didn't have an opinion about what she should be doing? It was a struggle not to scowl at him.
"It's a game," Scott said. "So forget the work part tonight. Just play. Each pitch isn't going to change the world, you know."
Well-it was a point of view. "Okay," she said. "Thanks." "The game's way better, when you enjoy yourself," he said. "So have fun." Then, he clapped her lightly on the right shoulder, and trotted out towards his position.
Fun. Well, if she could manage that, it would be a nice change.”

“Aeddan was nothing like this brother.
And, for some reason, that suddenly made it harder to keep on hating him for Mael's death. An accident? No, it hadn't exactly been that. The two of them had fought with every heated intention of ending the other. I knew the feeling-the red rage that descends in the middle of a fight, the blind driving need to kill, to win, at whatever cost. For Aeddan, the cost had been his own blood.”

“Just like whiskey, the marsh dwellers bootlegged their own laws-not like those burned onto stone tablets or inscribed on documents, but deeper ones, stamped in their genes. Ancient and natural, like those hatched from hawks and doves. When cornered, desperate or isolated, man reverts to those instinct that aim straight at survival. Quick and just. They will always be the trump card because they are passed on more frequently from one generation to the next than the gentler genes It is not a morality, but simple math. Among themselves doves fight as often as hawks.”

“I fell asleep to the sound of his breathing, his back rising and falling against me, like the sound of seawater kissing the fjord.”

“Man ist an etwas wichtigem vorbeigegangen. An einer Liebe, einem Beruf, einem Umzug in eine andere Stadt, ein anderes Land. An einem anderen Leben. Man ist daran vorbeigegangen aber doch so nah, dass man manchmal, in melancholischen, fast hypnotischen Momenten, trotzdem Teile dieses Moeglichen erfassen kann.”
