Ah! LOL So many books I need to read! I'll look yours up too Samuel. I think the more empathy we can all build in the world for our co species, the better. Sometimes we just need to think about our behavior and "see" it through a whole different perspective. I tried to think like a bird while writing this. What must things seem like? Even as I wrote, I was constantly educated. I cried at points writing it both from dismay at our behavior and joy of what we can be at times.

Elaine (httpgoodreadscomelaine_chaika) | 43 comments I'd love to join in a discussion, but, on the website, most of the commoners just push their own books or give a brief comment that doesn't call for a response.

There are a load of topics relevant to animals, not the least of which is the undeniable fact that all the animals in the world today are dependent on human good will to survive Even the jungles that are left are there because so far nobody wants to farm them or somebody has a particular mission for an animal. Jane Goodall is a good example. I'm not criticizing her. I believe she is a creative, gutsy woman who had done extraordinary work to get people not to wipe out all the wild animals. She has not only raised the consciousness of people who need to deal with animals as sentient beings with a right to life .
I am writing a book on dogs and civilizations and I have a thriving blog:
http://dogsandwolves-smartoldlady.blo....
We need to sensitize humans so they can feel how an animal does. One example. People go to a wolf den and remove the cubs for various research projects. But they never think of the wolf mother. Wolves only have one litter a year, and the entire pack cares for it. The mother becomes horribly anxious when it can't find her litter. That this is done supposedly in the name of science doesn't justify causing such emotional cruelty.

Hi Elaine -
I think we all write our books about animals/environment because we feel the same way you do. In fact, we "push our books" because we've written things that we hope will change the world. However, words can only change people's hearts if they're read. :-)

So my point is, I think you're right that we need to stop looking at our co-species as "lesser" beings that we can do what we want with. And, (here comes the plug for a good cause LOL) that's exactly a huge point in my book "The Starling God". We are all equal really -- differently gifted creatures - not one above the other. Good luck with your book too! Sounds VERY exciting.

Setlu Vairst | 10 comments Hi I just found this group tonight. I have a series where many of the stories are delivered via animals. Unicorn - Journey Beyond Forever is the world primarily seen through the eyes of a family of Unicorns, two Squirrels, and a dog.

Danny and the Seagull shows the world through the eyes of a Seagull, human boy, a few dogs, and a multitude of caterpillars.

Here's the trailers for them below (Unicorn is already released, Danny and Seagull is due out in the next 3/4 days) I hope you enjoy.

Hi Barbara
Just found this thread, I keep losing them... I need to find a way to keep organized in GoodReads.
Danny and the Seagull is aimed at teens through to 99+ years. I developed this book to begin as a cartoon-like adventure but slowly, as the story progresses, the aim is to make the characters 'real' and not cartoon-ey (I hope that makes sense).
The concept of this story is that a youngster can read it and will get to see some of the tough decisions that adults have to make as they get older and, for adults, the book is designed to remind them about the possibilities of youth - all the things we wanted to do when we were young, the dreams we had. It is designed so parent and child could read it and both 'get' something from it.
Originally, I found that people would think that the book was just for little 'kids' and I had to have a serious think about how to get across that it is more grown up than a kid's adventure.
I will have this book ready soon and I will get a promotion of it for free as soon as poss and I would recommend you get it and read it yourself (yes, it is for adults too! Did I mention that? lol). Although a comedy I will be very disappointed if readers don't shed the odd tear.

Jane Miller (janemiller) | 15 comments Just as the role that service dogs can play in the lives of people with invisible disabilities has started to receive national media attention—in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, and on Oprah—Healing Companions is the first book to profile these extraordinary dogs and how they can transform lives.

Service dogs have been assisting the blind, the hearing impaired and those in wheelchairs and with other disabilities for a long time. This ground breaking book provides a window onto the new world of psychiatric service dogs (PSDs) for people with psychiatric disabilities (such as depression, post-traumatic stress, bi-polar disorder, anxiety and panic attacks, and more), showing how the dogs can change and enhance the lives of their human companions.

In Healing Companions you will meet these amazing dogs and see how they have helped a number of individuals improve their lives in profound and unexpected ways, allowing them to gain self-esteem, self-confidence, assertiveness and so much more. These dogs provide emotional support, as all dogs do, but they are specifically trained to perform certain tasks unique to the individual’s needs.

More recently, psychiatric service dogs have helped many veterans returning from combat to overcome the effects of PTSD and return to more fulfilling lives. Through the stories of these individuals and their dogs, I show how you, a friend, or a family member might benefit from working with such a healing companion.

In addition to these remarkable stories, this book also explains which dogs are the right candidates for the job, which dogs are not, and how to tell the difference. Here’s a hint: it has nothing to do with the dog’s breed. Mixed breed dogs are very well suited to assist those with invisible disabilities. These dogs can be in-home companions or full-time Service Dogs who also accompany their companions out in public and to work.

Healing Companions discusses how these dogs are trained, how the dogs may impact other members of the family, and how they make one’s life more comfortable and less stressful for the dogs while they are undertaking their essential tasks. A helpful list of resources for further information, support, and services is provided.

For anyone who may not know about the profound benefits that these service dogs may bring, as well as for anyone who loves dogs and enjoys learning more about their value to their companions, this book will serve as an informative, practical, and inspirational guide.

Philip Martin | 2 comments Odin's Promise is a story of a girl (Mari), a dog (Odin, an elkhound), a war (WWII), and a country (occupied Norway).

Odin's Promise A Novel of Norway by Sandy Brehl

The author is Sandy Brehl. The book is available from Amazon as paperback or Kindle.

Odin's Promise

Booklist just ran a nice review:

"It is spring of 1940, and 11-year-old Mari should be celebrating the long summer days that have finally reached her rural Norwegian village. Instead, she and her family are trying to cope with the recent occupation by Nazi soldiers. Reserved and introverted, Mari has always been sheltered by her loving family and protected by her beloved elkhound, Odin, but as the Nazi presence in the village becomes increasingly oppressive, Mari begins to rebel in small ways. . . . Brehl offers a seldom-seen slice of daily life during WWII in this compelling tale of growing up. Strength of family, community, and cultural heritage are prominent themes, and the author does a commendable job illustrating the complex motivations of people on both sides of the war. Although the violence is mostly offscreen, the constant danger is palpable and makes for tense reading. Recommended for historical-fiction fans and animal lovers alike."

[I'm not the author, but the editor/publisher. The book is for middle-grade readers. There is indeed some tension and heartbreak, but the setting in an occupied country in WWII makes that important to the story. Any and all feedback from readers is appreciated!]

Second is the Third Book in my series, Mortal Realm Witch: Realms Unite?, which can also be a standalone book if desired. It features many different animals. Others are made up creatures such as a dog breed called the super cute Mystical Chi or the talkative Starlight Rabbit.

Summary of my book:

Leah (pekelady) | 23 comments Hi all very happy to be joining this group. Already seeing discussions about some of my favorite classic animal stories!

My first book "Little Paws and Lion Hearts" was just released this June! It is a tribute to my favorite breed of dog the Pekingese! With a unique history, distinct look, and quirky personality they are a dog that makes and impression on everyone they meet!

I put Little Paws together hoping to educate people on the breed and promote Pekingese rescue!

Thanks for looking!

Harrison Wein (harrisonbaewein) | 6 comments Hi all. I'm the author of The Life and Opinions of Housecat Hastings, the autobiography of an intellectual housecat. I'm fairly new to Goodreads and am still learning how it all works. I've set up an author page where you can ask me a question, read my blog and more: Harrison Bae Wein.

I'm grateful to have found such an active group interested in animal literature. I've participated in one challenge so far and hope to do more in the future.

Jane Miller (janemiller) | 15 comments I wanted to share with you my work, passion and my book, "Healing Companions: Ordinary Dogs and Their Extraordinary Power To Transform Lives," that includes compelling stories of those severely limited in their ability to function due to mental illness and how their psychiatric service dogs have helped them survive their debilitating symptoms of PTSD, depression, DID, OCD, eating disorders and other symptoms.

My work and passion as a psychotherapist is to eradicate the stigma in our society surrounding mental illness. We need to share stories that expose that those with mental illness live productive, independent lives filled with integrity, joy, struggles and courage. My passion is to change the perceptions and take the “I” out of mental Illness and change it to “WE’” in mental Wellness. We place shelter dogs with those with mental illness as psychiatric service dogs giving both the dog and human productive, independent lives. A win-win situation transforming the lives of so many. Peace and gratitude,

Piccolo Fortunato | 4 comments As a reader first, when I joined this group I discovered some must-read titles on dog behavior, history--and a couple life stories.

As an author, recently Braiswick, published the first of my series: Piccolo Tales in which an Italian greyhound, descendant of the artisans of Venice, travels to NYC--bright, gullible and ever loyal in his search for his father-- where he first labors as an intern in the studio of an internationally famous sculptor-- until his own career is unleashed.

Thanks for the opportunity to share, Piccolo: an Intern's Tale.

Elaine (httpgoodreadscomelaine_chaika) | 43 comments My book Humans, Dogs, and Civilization will be available as an ebook on Nook and Amazon by March. It not only presents 6 years of intense studying of dog research, but includes my own studies, especially of how dogs nonverbally and silently communicate complex messages to each other. I prove each of my points--like dogs sure can think and even scheme by true anecdotes, as well as science.

Meanwhile, you can go to my blog and leave messages if you want. Actually, I'll have prepublication copies of the book in mid February. You can contact me for a copy. The professional editor thought it was so excellent that she advised me to get more true stories about dogs for the sequel!!

Skye | 193 comments Hmmm, I am a scientist and therefore, a skeptic (as well as a dog book reviewer for more than 10 years). I am interested in reviewing the book, particularly since you "prove . . . by anecdotes." What is your blog?
