Self-challenge - 50 books in 5 months?

I second that. And third, fouth and fifth it!
Cheers guys! And I have indeed read and enjoyed some of the work of Mr Darren Humphries. It's been several years since I read a new Thursday Next novel though, so I'm afraid he'll have to take a back seat for the time being...

As well. Not detracting from our Daz, but Jasper Ffffforde is brilliant. :)
Good luck with the challenge though. I've read 38 books since I joined GR in April, so I'm sure you can do it :D
Cheers! I'll certainly do my best! And yes, Jasper Fffforde is fab - I've just realised I've not read his Last Dragonslayer stuff yet as well, so yay! Shades of Grey was a bit of a revelation, with an author I thought of as disposable fun upping his game to a whole new level.

One of my friends got all 3 50 Shades of Grey books as her leaving present, she wasn't too impressed.

Since I have read so many, and have definite ideas of what I like and don't like. I don't think I've ever tried Fforde though.
I don't like people buying books for me, I either don't want it or already have it. And the few times someone has given me one saying 'Oh you'll absolutely love this one.' Well guess what, I haven't!

Well guess what, I haven't!"My nephew was given a hardback book one birthday by his uncle (not my brother! - BIL's brother) and the following christmas got the same book in paperback from the same uncle.
I get a lot of books as presents but they are smart enough to use my wishlist on Amazon (and they buy only paper when I've wished for the paper one - smart friends!)If they can't buy a paper one, it's generally a giftcard.
I have my favourite authors, and friends and family know who they are. There's sort of an unwritten pact that I won't buy any new book from a favourite author if it's released between late September and mid-January (my birthday's in mid-Jan). So I get a lot of books as presents and generally they're highly successful and much appreciated :)
Thats a good way to do it. I set up a wish-list for birthday and christmas and send it to my family, and they choose something from that. That way we don't get any nasty surprises.
My brother loves to buy me books he thinks I would like, but unfortunately gets it wrong all the time!! The Kindle however was one of the best presents!! I must try sending him my wish list instead, although he might just buy me vouchers rather than books now.
I'm rather afraid I didn't much care for Mark of the Dragon Queen, but I read it, so up it goes. And on to a collection of William Meikle short stories...
I can see from the reviews that I'm very much in the minority, but I guess you can't please everyone, and I'm probably not the target market. I'm much more fond of The Shadow of Black Wings in terms of dragon-based fantasy this year.
So I've got a little way into the 50 challenge I set myself. Six books, or seven if you count Rosen's recent short story (and although it was excellent, it's probably not in the spirit of the challenge to count it as a whole book). Not a great start, but I think I'm just about on track...
I think I need to get up to 20% by the end of August to have any real chance of meeting my target though!
I've just had to give my first two star Amazon review to a Twitter acquaintance's book. I feel pretty bad for him, but I found his book almost unreadable due to constant errors.
A bit of a lull thanks to learning a new set of lines for the panto, but have finished Nights at the Circus (great book) and Operation Herod has finally been added to GR.
Cool! What are you playing? We've had about three rehearsals now, and the first half is starting to take shape...
I'll just be in the chorus :o( No lines for me, I'm just chuffed that I'm the only person who started last year to come back this year!
Fair enough - quite a few of my friends are in the chorus for ours, I think for panto it can be just as much fun as having a lead role, given all the singing and dancing involved!
Panto is the one bit of theatre where you can mess things up :)At least that's what I told myself the year I danced off the wrong side of the stage after turning up drunk to the dress rehearsal...

Ahahaha, that's not too bad a mistake though. The audience would never have known!
I have a feeling that everyone will be turning up drunk/hungover as apparently it'll be partying every night after the show
Oh yes, you have to do the drinks after each performance! We got wrecked after the last panto - the local pubs look forward to our shows for boosted takings!

So I'm now aiming to read 50 books before the end of the year. I'm already halfway through Artemis Fowl so I won't count that, so the first book will probably be Pompomberry House. Other recommendations welcome, but I have a TBR folder and pile as long as your arm, probably enough to take me over the line...
As a few others have tried, I'll try and include as many books from UKAKF authors as possible, but there's likely to be a lot of Alistair Reynolds, Paul Magrs, Robert Rankin, Jasper Fforde, Terry Pratchett and Peter F Hamilton, cos that's who's already on my shelf demanding to be read.
Wish me luck!
