The United Nations Department for the Enforcement and Apprehension of Demons is the first, last and only line of defence against the supernatural threats trying to break into a world where magic and technology are uneasy bedfellows. In his third adventure, Agent Ward of UNDEAD travels the globe to track down a deadly threat. From Russia to Spain to Mexico to ... um ... High Wycombe he faces off against giant wyrms, forest spirits and perhaps the greatest danger that he has ever encountered. And we didn't even mention the Valkyries.
I am English and recently bade a fond farewell to my forties. I have been writing stories since school when I won a parker pen for being shortlisted in a national schools writing competition.
My particular genre of choice wanders around all over the place, but has mainly settled into humorous fantasy and science fiction (or at least I think they're humorous and some people who have kindly left reviews seem to agree).
During any spare time (of which there isn't much since I'm recently widowed and dealing with two children) I edit a website focussed on science fiction television at www.scififreaksite.com and a similar blog on the side.
I then try to cram in a few books on my kindle to read.
I only discovered this series recently but they were do good that I am buying and reading them all. To conceive of a series that is part Man from UNCLE, part James Bond and part other worldly and then make it work marks the author out from the many who write other world books. A true alternative universe with characters readers can recognise and sympathise with takes genius and this writer has achieved that. Better still, they can be read out of order, and reread with equal enjoyment. A great alternative to the Discworld series for those who enjoy total and complete out of this world adventures. Absolutely brilliant.
Enjoyed the style and pace, reminiscent of the old spy programs that clearly inspired the series, with a healthy dose of fantasy thrown in for good measure
I received a preview copy of the third book in this fantasy series which is really taking off now. I enjoyed the first, I really enjoyed the second and I’m thrilled to bits with the third. I think some of this is from knowing and loving Agent Ward. He is one of those characters in a book that you really warm to and I can only bear finishing one of these UNDEAD stories because I know I’ll be meeting him again in the next. He is very good at his job but that involves causing chaos. He is daring, brave, but admits that he is often scared to death. He’s aware of his failings but very likeable with it. In this volume he deals with a dragon, one of the deadliest beasts there is (apart from his Boss). Incidentally, I notice that if you have missed out on this series till now, you can buy the whole trilogy in one volume and catch up at your leisure (but I hope the author won’t stop at three).
The beauty of these books for me is the warmth and wit of Darren Humphries’ writing. He is funny without being crass and I enjoy his work immensely. There’s always plenty of action in these stories and they are crisply told. If Agent Ward comes to his own personal Reichenbach Falls I shall be gutted!
Once again Darren Humphries has not let his fans down (in my opinion at least). U.N.D.E.A.D. 3 is just as action-packed, fun-filled and random as anyone could wish, I marvel at his ability to write such a humourous story while still managing to pluck at the heart strings, I never thought I would feel emotional about a giant cave worm!
There were more twists and turns in book 3 than I could count and most of them I didn't see coming, I must be easily led along! Having hardly finished this book I am already eagerly awaiting book 4. Absolutely worth every single penny and more.
This is a hugely enjoyable series and if anything this third novel is the best yet. Agent Ward is a great character in the Sardonic Hero With Wit Under Pressure mode although clearly he is not an infallible superman, which makes him all the more believable. Or as believable as possible give the situations that he finds himself in! What I particularly enjoyed about this adventure (on top of the usual well-crafted storyline and characterisations) was the globe-hopping and exciting backdrops. A really dangerous mythical beast and a good dollop of humour thrown in makes this one of the best fun reads of this year. Recommended.
I felt this third entry in the Man From UNDEAD series was a step up from the Zombie-based second installment. A renewed emphasis on the magical elements of Ward's job made the thematic conflict between science and magic a lot more plausible. Some great action sequences, the very welcome return of certain characters, and a lot of humour. The second book had felt a bit low-key to me for what is in many respects a Bond pastiche, so this was a great return to form. Impressive stuff.
Another cracking read from Darren Humphries. I have read the first two books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed them but this third one is definitely my favourite. I love Agent Ward and his sense of humour and he has me literally laughing out loud. I cannot wait for the fourth book
Darren Humphries' books tick all my boxes. Wonderful language, winding story lines that are so well done they are effortless to follow, great characters and creatures, and, especially in his UNDEAD trilogy, laugh out loud humour. I eagerly await further adventures from Agent Ward.
Really enjoyed this book. Read the first three one after another and can't wait to read the next one. Loved the humour and the characters. Similar in tone (and just as good) as the Hidden Academy books by Jon Rosenberg.
Brief, entertaining novel. Action driven, with an impossibly competent, but likeable hero. The supporting cast are becoming familiar. Did anyone else think the anti-hero was being described as Richard Branson? Enjoyable book, but best to start with number one.
