Thank you, sir. All kidding aside, I'll try to bring something of value, but my first concern is my own self-discipline. I'm very gregarious; must learn to control that.

Alisha Torres (alishaltorres) | 16 comments Hey, Fellow Lovers of the Page,

Can anyone help me find single books and/or books in a series that have Faeries or pertain to the Fae? I'd prefer them to be Supernatural, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Urban-Fantasy, and Paranormal primarily. I suppose a little romance would be alright, if it's secondary to the abovementioned genres. Also, I'd prefer it to be Adult, unless it's a New Adult. =D

Thanking you in advance!
~A

By adult, do you mean erotic, or mature?

Alisha,

For something uniquely different, I recommend The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue.

Published in 2006, the double story of Henry Day begins in 1949, when he is kidnapped at age seven by a band of wild childlike beings who live in an ancient, secret community in the forest; referred to in days gone by as fairies, but now prefer to be referred to as changelings.

The changelings rename their captive Aniday and he becomes, like them, unaging and stuck in time. They leave one of their own to take his place, an imposter who must try - with varying success - to hide his true identity from the Day family.

The story is narrated in turns by Henry and Aniday.

Alisha Torres (alishaltorres) | 16 comments Sorry for the confusion, I meant Adult as in versus Young Adult reading.

I don't mind erotica or romance as long as it plays a secondary/minor role to the paranormal, fantasy, urban-fantasy, supernatural, and or science fiction.

Your recommendation sounds amazing and right up my alley. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

Happy Reading My Friend!!

Ah, so. I'm currently involved in Tales of Erana: Myths and Legends
This is a novella involving itself with high-legendary tales of a world populated by elves, trolls, and humans. It has a Silmarillion type of feel to it, like you're reading of events from long ago that you can't get too close to. I suppose it isn't for everyone, but it is an odd approach with a feel to it that isn't quite like anything else.

Lots of ideas:
Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire. Series, but the first can be read as a stand-alone.
Bitter Snow by Lauren Sweet. Series of novellas.
Moonheart by Charles de Lint. Stand alone, sort of crazy mix of Celtic and Native American fae.

That should keep you going for a while :-)

Matthew Duncan | 9 comments Hello everyone. I'm Matthew O. Duncan and I am a writer. I started out as a playwright, with a number of productions and a few awards. Yet with very little income in the theater I moved on into the business world and writing became a hobby. I did venture back into the realm of writing a few times with books on business and short stories, but it wasn't until three years ago that I took up the keyboard again as my primary pursuit. I had an idea that I had been considering for a number of years and finally put it on paper. After nearly three years and more rough drafts than I can count I now have a published novel. That is how I can say "I am a writer."
I am also a big advocate of books and writers. Over the past few months I written a number of articles on subjects ranging from self-punishing to the downfalls of buying reviews.
I'll looking forward to getting to know people in this group.

I disagree I feel like Rothfuss is a well written combination of every generic throw away fantasy ever written in one. It's main demanding aspect is that it's long, but if I read that book when I was 13-14 I would be completely blown away; now that I can see everything it's doing a mile away and nothing really makes my imagination roll it's not as good as it would of been then. Now the enjoyment I get out of it comes from the interesting way of telling the tale: unreliable narrator, and of course just how nostalgic it all is. What I'm trying to say is I feel like it is a very good introduction or early fantasy book, and it's still pretty good later, but for different reasons.

Queen of the orcs is particularly good fantasy with a different interpretation of the orc and it's a strong female lead. I read anything to do with orcs and find them to be my favorite fantasy race. Not too long of a page count for all three books and averages 270-350

Stan Nicholls writes a series of fantasies, all with the main title, "Orc," usually followed by something else such as Shadow Army, etc. Plug in "Orc" on amazon, and it will show you the whole list.

Jerry Fedora | 2 comments Hello everyone! I just joined the group today.
I live in Texas, just north of Dallas.
First scifi book I read, was I believe Rocketship Galileo, by Heinlein. I was in the 4th grade I think, 1965/66. Found it in the school library. I was hooked! I have lost rack of the books I've read, although Goodreads is helping me recall.
Spent the last 2 days scanning in my paperbacks.
Spent close to 20 years in the Navy/Marine Corps, so military scifi is one of my favorite sub-genres. Weber, Moon, Drake.
Read Game of Thrones when it first came out, totally hooked on it as well as the HBO series!
Hope to meet some fellow addicts :) on here as all as find some new things to read.

Edward Ryan (edwardkryan) | 27 comments Ed Ryan here - new to the group and Goodreads. Used to be far more prolific a reader, but job/kids trimmed that back!

I'm a fan of older fantasy along the lines of Howard and Moorcock, but also enjoy Joe Abercrombie (the Red Country readfest actually drew me to the group!) and some others. Very interested in Lawrence's Prince of Thorns, but no time yet!

Anyway, look forward to the group!

Janette (isahah) | 4 comments Hi! My name is Janette Grant and I've been lurking around for a while without enough free time to read as much as I would like but it's great to see such active discussions and to discover so many new books. I became a sci-fi fan mainly from the influence of my dad (via Star Wars, Dune, Marvel super heros and countless sci-fi movies) and have been hooked since reading Frank Herberts Dune books.

I'm a Muslim convert and the author of the children's books: Sameerah's Hijab and the First Day of School, Hannah Habibi Learns About Modesty, and Let's Learn Our Religion Islamic Study Workbook and currently own and run Mindworks Publishing, a community based desktop publishing business. I've also published poetry books and the first of my spiritual/sci-fi books, Eseere, which I hope to share in the GoodReads Authors discussion.

I live in Texas with my family and look forward to participating more. Thanks for this group! It's a great resource!

message 4578: by Jack (new)

Jack | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Jack. I joined this group yesterday and decided to introduce myself here. I love fantasy and a bit of sci-fi on the side.

Used to be a huge bookworm but don't have as much time to read anymore as I would like, having substituted video games for books instead. English is my second language so the first fantasy books that really gripped me were City of Ember and Land of Elyon series. My favourite books are the Painted Man and Ready Player One (although many references went completely over my head). I have recently decided to become more active, especially since I got a huge backlog of new books to go through and ones that I want to reread.

I'm a student in Sheffield University, UK doing a journalism degree. I plan on writing in the future and am currently working on my first serious story that I will hopefully not abandon. Since I have numerous books planned for the near future, I am mostly hoping to find fellow readers to talk to about fantasy and expand my view of the fantasy/sci-fi genre. I am excited to be a member here, thanks!

My name is Michael, and I am a bookaholic. Aside from that, I’m Scottish and live in Nairobi with my wife and two kids. I write when I’m not reading, working, looking after the munchkins, fencing, playing guitar or making a bad fist at playing football.

Among favourite sci-fi/fantasy books are (in no particular order):

Behold the Man
Flowers for Algernon
Hitchhiker’s Guide
Neverwhere
Lagoon
Anubis Gates
Last Call
Frankenstein
The Player of Games
The Prince of Thorns
Weaveworld

Not on my salary! I've about worn out the internet, though. I find it amazingly easy to find out what it's like now; putting together a picture of early British rule is a bit more problematic...

message 4589: by Michael (new)

Michael Logan | 7 comments There are some decent books out there, I believe. The Scramble for Africa by Thomas Pakenham is obviously continent wide, but if I remember correctly there was a decent chunk on East Africa.

message 4590: by Mark (new)

Mark Henwick | 67 comments Jack wrote: "putting together a picture of early British rule is a bit more problematic..."

Author Charles Allen Tales from the Dark Continent Charles Allen; he has only the one on Africa, but his Plain Tales of the Raj gives an insight into the colonial empire.

Also Empires of the Monsoon: A History of the Indian Ocean and Its Invaders has a good bit on early eastern Africa. It's better for much earlier, but does go up to approximately the age of steam.

More if you're interested.

message 4591: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, gents. Fictional British rule on a slightly skewed timeline; I'm a steampunk writer, so nothing in my stories is quite what it should be. Gives me something of an advantage in the details, but it has to be close enough that people on our timeline will recognize the concepts. But these are good suggestions, and I'll definitely be investigating. Thanks again.

message 4592: by Peter (last edited Jul 25, 2014 08:08AM) (new)

Peter Hi guys
My name is Peter Flannery, a Brit living in the Scottish Borders. I've always loved fantasy and sci-fi. In fact, one of my most crushing childhood memories was waking up late one Saturday morning to discover I'd missed most of Jason and the Argonauts! Disaster, calamity! Woe! I might have to wait a full 2 years before it came on telly again! (Think I sulked for about a week :)

Fantasy and sci-fi is in my blood. I love it when it's done well and smile fondly when it isn't quite so polished because I remember my own early renditions of make-believe worlds.

For about 15 years I worked as a sculptor in the fantasy industry, creating models for role-playing and table top games. I moved on to work as a writer and editor for various sci-fi and fantasy companies and now work as a full time independent writer.

I'll be honest. I am joining this group in the hope of connecting with people who might be interested in my forthcoming books. But I'm also hoping to get some insights and recommendations of good books that I might enjoy.

So that's me... I look forward to meeting you and hearing what the group has to say.

Cheers

Peter

Hello!

My name is Breana, you can call me Bre if you want. I was born and raised in Minnesota and so far not quite ready to leave it. I enjoy reading, mainly Fantasy and Paranormal, but I am trying to get into other genres as well.

When I write my own stories they tend to fall under fantasy, but I am working on broadening my writing spectrum as well.

This year (primarily summer) I have read the following:

-The last three books of the Harry Potter series

-Stray by Rachel Vincent

-Reread the first two books of the Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare.

-Reread the first three books of the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

-Reread the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead

-Currently, I am rereading the Iron King by Julie Kagawa

I am hoping to be able to take part in the reading challenge, but right now I can't afford to buy books so I might have to take a trip to the library.

Armando Benzecri (uminatos) | 4 comments Hello everyone, my name is Armando Benzecri. Nothing much to say other than I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre. My favorite author is Brandon Sanderson and I'm currently making my way through the Malazan Book of the Fallen.

I'm an aspiring writer as well, and even though it's not my native language, most of my work is written in English. Mostly because the genre I write (Fantasy) isn't exactly something very successful in my language (Spanish) and I'm from Venezuela, where fiction isn't exactly easy to publish, especially fantasy.

I study Communication in college (a mix of journalism, audiovisuals and publicity in my country).

Thank you all for having me. I'm looking forward to be part of the group!
