Eliene | 18 comments Hello! My name is Eliene and I'm from Canada. My intro to science fiction and fantasy started with Children's and YA sci-fi/fantasy growing up. I've branched out a lot more in the last few years or so but I still haven't tackled a lot of classics of the genre. I've read about 20 of the book club reads so far... Some books by Neal Stephenson, Lois McMaster Bujold, Octavia Bulter for example. I'm looking forward to participating in the monthly reads and meeting new people!

I'm also new to goodreads. I'd love to make new friends with similar reading tastes!

Mark | 19 comments Hey Everyone,

My name's Mark and I'm South West England, though currently I'm living in Sri Lanka. I work as a teacher of English as a foreign language. It's a great way to see the world and if you're in Asia or the Middle East live a good life without having to work too hard :-) So I'd definitely recommend it.

I've just written my first novel, science fiction, and am about start my second, a fantasy. When I was working on the sci fi story I spent a lot of time reading Science Fiction classics.

Here's a little of what I read:

Foundation
Do androids dream of electric sheep
A Scanner Darkly
Flow my tears, the Policeman said
Consider Phebus
The player of games
Transmission
Ender's game
The Illustrated man
Fahrenheit 451
Under the skin

Loved them all, though was not too impressed by Ender's game to be honest, considering all the hype it gets.

Now I'm set to start a fantasy novel, I've begun my fantasy reading.

So far I've read:

The Dark Tower - The Gunslinger
I shall wear midnight
Something wicked this way comes
The Dark Materials trilogy
Harry Potter 1 - 5

So as you can see, not much. I'd love to hear any recommendations. Despite being an indie writer I haven't read much by indie writers. So if you could recommend some indie fantasy or sci fi, that would be wicked.

Take it easy,
Mark

Michele Hi I'm Michele, 41, and a lifelong fan of the SF & F genre, though really I read just about anything that strikes my fancy. I joined Goodreads over a year ago and somehow missed seeing that this group existed! So here I am, ready to jump in the deep end :)

Most of my favorites were set in my formative (reading) years - which would be the late 80s early 90s - so Heinlein, McCaffery, Herbert, Feist, Eddings, Lackey, Cherryh, etc. But also some new stuff I really like - Abercrombie, Scalzi, Corey, Jemison.

Okay, gotta start scanning all the old posts...

Hi Mark. If you're looking for indie fantasy and sci fi there's these:

The cartographer's apprentice, by Jim Webster, actually anything by Jim Webster.
If you like the goons you may like The Banned Underground Series by Will Macmillan Jones - marmite, you love em or hate em.
The Warden books by Davis Morrese
The imagine Trilogy by Lex Allen

Hi Mark.

I'm an indie author too. If your looking for indie fantasy and sci-fi everything on the list I gave is indie apart from the Pratchett's. The banned underground books are a bit marmite. I enjoyed them but not everyone does.

Andrei Cherascu | 4 comments Hi guys,

I'm Andrei. I'm a long-time sci-fi fan but I also like to dabble in fantasy from time to time.

Been born in 1985, majored in English, worked in IT for a while and quit my job two years ago to become a full-time sci-fi writer.

Some of my favorite works are Frank Herbert's Dune, Peter F Hamilton's Commonwealth series, Arthur C Clarke's Rama series and Frank Schatzing's The Swarm, an excellent novel which, unfortunately, has not been translated to English (I think).

It's great to be part of the group, I'm looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Andrei Cherascu | 4 comments Mark, I hope you enjoy them. They're fantastic (granted, I read the Rama series more than a decade ago, while still in my teens). The Commonwealth series is a truly magnificent work if you have a bit of patience with it. I loved the characters especially.

Jillian Anaya | 2 comments Hello, I'm Jillian, I was recommended to the site and group from friends. I am so excited to see so many avid readers. I'm in California and I manage to sit inside on my computer or couch and read to spite the great weather.
My dad is a huge reader and he got me started at a young age so I know I can still go to his house and pick from his newest additions to his book collection for a good read. I am here for the same reason... always looking for the next great book.
I have always been drawn to scifi and fantasy. I guess it's the way the authors fit the fantastical with logic that I love. It seems to be an addiction at this point.
I read through everyone's introductions and found myself smiling at the mention of many of the books and saying aloud to no one, "Oh yeah, that's a good one." LOL
On my hit list: Wool and The Bone Clocks
Currently reading: The Fall of Nex
I guess that's about all. Anyways, it nice to meet you all.

Jax Spenser (jaxspenser) | 2 comments Hello Goodreaders!

My name is Jax Spenser and I'm an author. I'll let you figure out what books I've written so as not to come off as a shameless self-promoter, which I don't deny I may be. I like to think I'm an avid reader but the truth is I have bad reading habits and don't get to read as nearly as much as I would like. I do appreciate story. I've changed my profession several times over the years but one continuous thread has always been story. I come back to it like a Pavlovian dog. Before this last permutation of author I worked in development in Hollywood. It's not nearly as much fun as it sounds.

My favorite book genres are scifi/horror/YA/paranormal... always willing to stop everything for an original zombie read (which are few). Asimov, Dick, and King are influencers but man, if I wasn't blown away by the Harry Potter series like the reader above.

I'm a chronic TV and film spec guy because I have a hard time focusing on just novel writing. Most of my spec scripts are paranormal in nature. Except for a deep vein of comedy specs for TV. I might actually post those some time at Wattpad. They're bawdy and blue humor I've had my slowdowns in Hollywood where the only open door is an exit.

Wrap up time... I look forward to posting more and hearing from more of you. Hopefully as fans of my work. :)

Cheers, Jax

Welcome, Jax. I admire your restraint! We share poor reading habits in common. In my case, I feel like any time I have "book" time, it's wasted if I don't spend it writing. As a consequence, I've been two months reading a very good book, because I just don't take the time to move it along enough. Of course, I also share a Nook with two other people, so... Anyway, welcome once more, and I hope you have a great stay here.

Stephanie | 9 comments Hello everyone! I'm Stephanie, 22 years old, and I currently live in the state of Indiana. I became a fantasy fan after reading the first four Harry Potter books during the fourth grade and I became a science fiction fan from the influence of my father ( via Star Trek).

So far this year I have read/listened to:

A Big Hand for the Doctor by Eoin Colfer
Trouble in Paradise by Nev Fountain
Lungbarrow by Marc Platt
Players by Terrance Dicks
The Time Machine by HG Wells
Doctor Who: Fugitive volume 1 by Tony Lee
Tip of the Tongue by Patrick Ness
Remembrance of the Daleks by Ben Aaronovitch
Babblesphere by Jonathan Morris
The Spear of Destiny by Marcus Sedgwick
The Roots of Evil by Philip Reeve
Enemy Aliens by Alan Barnes
Death's Deal by Darren Jones
The Nameless City by Michael Scott
Smoke and Mirrors by Steve Lyons
Shockwave by James Swallow
Night of the Whisper by Cavan Scott
The Time Machine by Matt Fitton
Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who: Assimilation2 volumes 1-8 by Scott and David Tipton

Currently I'm reading:
The Lord of the Rings one volume edition by JRR Tolkien

Edit: Accidently put the wrong age. I'm 22, not 21.

I've filled out an authors post, I hope I did it right, don't want to start off on the foot with the group.

I love most SciFi and Fantasy but my favorite authors are Heinlein, Asimov, Tolkien and the like. Also the 'Elders' of Wells, Verne, etc.

I'm really looking forward to the reading challenge and to finding new great books to read. Nothing better than finding out about a new author and diving into his/her imagination.

Hi, nice to meet you.

The Rama series was/is one of my all time favorite books. At the time I read them they opened up an incredible new Universe for me. I was in Rama, exploring and wondering who/what had built it. It's on my re-read list!

You'll be fine, Gary. I see you like Verne and Wells. Have you looked into steampunk? Some of the better writers in that field can leave you feeling like those old masters are writing new material today, and you get to read it. There are several groups that specialize in that around. In any case, have great stay with us.

message 4727: by A.M. (new)

A.M. Reynwood (amreynwood) | 8 comments Greetings, everybody! I'm A. M. Reynwood, Reynwood for short (I guess), although, just Reyn sounds pretty cool . . . Anyway, even though I joined Goodreads in February, I'm new here, to the group and (to be brutally honest) socializing as a whole.

'Social butterfly' was never a tern attributed to me. 'Reclusive introvert' might be more suited, but a caterpillar doesn't really become a butterfly until it breaks out of its cocoon, right? So here I am, trying to make friends.

I was born and raised in Upstate New York, have never been anywhere near NYC, and have no real desire to visit. I'm a country girl and like my neighbors much better from across the field than five feet away. (We may or may not get a little flustered why people just assume we're from the city if we say we're from NY. It's an entire state, not just a tiny little city in the corner that could drift away into its own entity without a shed tear- Oops. I'm not here to talk about politics.)

I suppose one could say I was a late bloomer when it came to fanatical reading, I'm definitely not one of those "I started reading when I was three and had classics such as Great Expectations and whatnot instilled in my young mind since before I started kindergarden, but as the child of a collage professor it couldn't really be helped . . . " (absolutely no offence toward anyone fitting this description. You're great.) I started slow with books like Pony Pals, because I loved horses, just like 95% of all the other young girls out there. My introduction to fantasy was gradual and greatly influenced by my elder brother, who was all "dragons are awesome!" while I was all "unicorns and fairies!" Yes, I think dragons are pretty stinkin' cool now, too.

Just before I turned 12 we moved from the town of Clifton Springs to Newark (NY, not NJ). It's not nearly as charming, but quiet (when the neighbors aren't setting off fireworks, or shotguns, or revving engines . . .) and we have a lot of space. Imagination running wild, anyone? Creativity sparks, and my road to fantasy exploded. Maybe a little bit violently. I was reading all the time, and then something happened. The floodgates in my mind were thrown open and I was filled with ideas for my own stories.

I can't say for sure when I decided I wanted to write, but I suppose stories have been sneaking around in there for a while. However, it wasn't until 2012 that a story developed well enough from start to finish to actually publish, and now I am just beginning to realize my dream.

Reading is still one of my favorite activities (which is kind of a silly way to put it, since you're not really active while you read), but I don't get to do it as much as I used to. It almost took me a whole year to read a single trilogy. And I don't think there was much of anything else in addition to those three volumes. It was pretty sad.

I still haven't explored many genres outside of fantasy, as I don't like Paranormal, Romance, and outer space and aliens was never really my thing (talk about going against the grain), but I am trying to broaden my horizons, per se, if only to help with my writing.

One of my favorite authors is Wayne Thomas Batson, I love the way he tells a story and I haven't been disappointed yet. Someday I would love to meet him and shake his hand and thank him for showing me that you CAN write an amazing story without magic or kissing. I want to reach that level of excellence some day.

A very few of my favorite books/series, in no particular order:

The Door Within trilogy
The Enduring Flame trilogy
Redwall
Lord of the Rings
Rowan of Rin
The King Raven trology
The Kneebone Boy
The Queen's Thief
Sense and Sensibility (strangely enough)
Trigun (manga . . . yeah, I know . . .)
How to Train Your Dragon (surprisingly deep)

I'm a weird one, as I'm often told, but I'm looking forward to hanging out will all you people!

No matter how isolated from the UK you are, you can't have helped but notice we recently had a vote on whether Scotland should leave the UK and go off on its own. The political answer is that they asked the wrong question. If they had re-drawn the border as a circle about 40 miles radius round the centre of London, then we could all have gone with them, and left the real problems (London City Boys, Bankers, Politicians (yugh!), Insurance salesmen, etc to sink or swim on their own - hopefully the former!

On a non-political answer (but related) do you read pure Fantasy or would you be interested in charles Stross's "Rule 34" - set in the near future, in an independent Scotland, full of humour, but with a disturbing view of what policing and maybe other aspects of society could become if we don't take more care with new technologies (such as electronics and genetic modification).
Comments?

Thank you so much for that! I'm curious what you consider "upstate". Because it's a horribly misused term that often seems to mean "not NYC" and makes the state seem like some tiny little place, when it's far from it.

Taylor Hello all!

My name is Taylor Matson, a passionate bibliophile and overall lover of words. I graduated college this past May from Washington State University (GO COUGS!). My four years there were incredible but I am ready to move on to bigger and better things! I studied English with a literary studies emphasis and a minor in philosophy.

After spending most of my time there reading, analyzing, writing, and talking about books it has been a strange transition to a world of simply reading what I want to read, with no requirements to get me thinking in great depths about those books or bouncing ideas off classmates. Which, in fact, brings me here!

I am obsessed with fantasy novels and have some favorite sci-fi also, though my experience there is less extensive. I am always looking for book recommendations in these areas and was very excited to find this group! In my spare time I am also working on the beginning stages of my own fantasy novel, more for my own enjoyment and challenge than for any monetary gain I may someday get from it. Though I would of course love to have any novel of mine published, I really just hope to someday hold a finished copy in my hands. I was pleased to see this group also has a folder for authors, and I hope to take advantage of it someday(once I actually have some words on a page.)

Some of my favorite books are:
Riyria Chronicles - Michael Sullivan
Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Harry Potter - JK Rowling
Dune - Frank Herbert
Perks of Being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky
Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini

And many more that I inevitably forget because of the sheer volume of books I consume. I can't wait to get started on this group's reading list! (:

That's fair enough in its way (I would love to break into the American market) but what happened to all the F/SF readers in my own time zone? What I consider Upstate? How about Wayne County, Finger Lakes Region of Western New York? The sticks, surrounded by cornfields and dairy farms, where shotguns keep pigeons and woodchucks at bay, and no one comes along the road unless you live there or are lost. Yup.

Hi, Taylor. I'm new to the group as well.
You're list is great! Bingo for me, because there are stories/authors I have not visited!
That's one of the reasons I'm getting such a kick out of this group, the chance to find great new authors and books!
Herbert is a favorite of mine. Dune was one of those eye-opening reads. I had not experienced anything like it and possibly never will again.
I'll look up your other selections.
I like most Golden Age SciFi; Heinlein, Verne, Asimov, etc
There is plenty of great 'modern' writers as well. Orson Scott Card is very high on my list.
Hope we can talk more about this favorite subject.
You can view my author's post as well to know more about me.

Hey, George, nice to meet you.

Horror is one area that I have not read much, don't know why. I've read a bit of H.P. Lovecraft and some of Poe's classics.

What do you like about these genre's and what authors would you recommend?

You can read my authors post to get mine but I tend to enjoy the style of the 'Golden Age' SciFi writers.

Christopher (CAGonzales) | 2 comments Hi all! I've browsed Goodreads for new books to read for some time, but have finally decided to jump in on some of the discussions. I've loved Sci-Fi fantasy since I was tiny, using most of my free time as a child to delve into new worlds. I'm a teacher and write on the side, and hope to continue finding new worlds to explore through these discussion boards : ).
