Good to see you here!

message 2205: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (sssuzyq65) | 7 comments I guess it's time to join for real. I've been reading sf since I saw the Day the Earth Stood Still- the original, and best-in the theater when I was 11 years old. So you can see I've been at it a longgggg time. Recently I've been doing some historical research and recalling short stories that were the original pulp fiction. Interesting to relate this to today's styles.

Welcome Suzanne :)

I've never really read much in the way of short stories, I don't know why.

message 2207: by Ken (new)

Ken Lindsey | 5 comments Welcome, Suzanne! I'm new to this group as well :)

message 2208: by Kate (new)

Kate | 4 comments Hello! I'm Kate, and I got hooked on fantasy after reading A Wrinkle in Time when I was about 7. I love epic fantasy and have recently broadened my horizons to include urban fantasy. (My interests are extremely diverse.) I've read the Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth, Song of Ice and Fire, Pern, Belgariad, Shannara, as well as books by Guy Gavriel Kay (whom I'm thrilled to see is on the list for June), Jennifer Fallon, Kristen Britain, Mercedes Lackey, Kate Elliot, Patrick Rothfuss, Scott Lynch, Sara Douglass, Brandon Sanderson, and Brent Weeks. I would love to hear any recommendations you all have, and I can't wait to join the discussions!

Colin Taber Hi Suzanne & Kate, welcome to the group!

message 2212: by Susan (new)

Susan Ee | 14 comments Hi all!

I'm Susan. I'm new to Goodreads. I've been reading spec fic my whole life. I read all over the sci-fi/fan genres but I've recently gotten into dark urban fantasy and have been reading a bunch of them. I'm currently reading the second book in the Sandman Slim series, Kill the Dead (that title cracks me up). I'm also somewhere in the middle of the Nightside series and the Cal Leandros series.

I'm an author and filmmaker. My first novel, Angelfall, just published. And my latest short film played on a few cable TV stations around the country and on a Halloween TV special. That was fun. It recently finished doing the festival rounds and played in both children's festivals as well as horror festivals. I found that combination especially funny. :-)

message 2217: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Susan :)

Be sure to post info about your book in the Authors folder.

message 2218: by Susan (new)

Susan Ee | 14 comments Thanks, Ala!

I did post in the Authors folder. It was my very first post on Goodreads and I was excited to do it. But I must have been overenthusiastic because I got slammed. :-( Took me a couple of days to bounce back from that. I thought that was the one place where I was invited to do that kind of thing so it confused me.

My second post on Goodreads was on this thread and it's a much nicer experience. Thanks for the welcome! That's very nice of all of you. I should have come here first. :-)

Douglas Bittinger (dougbittinger) | 60 comments (You have to read this with a British accent, for some reason I’m thinking with a British accent today, and no I haven’t been at the Monty Python collection again.)

What then, didn’t you see the sign out front? The one that says, “Go first to the introductions room and introduce your self." Once you’ve been properly introduced we will show you around. Or, we may blind fold you, spin you around three times and have you try to pin a tail on Ala, depending on what day of the week it is.

message 2220: by Susan (new)

Susan Ee | 14 comments Very cute, Allan! Yeah, that's excellent with the British accent. :-)

message 2221: by Ben (new)

Ben Loory Hi, I'm Ben. I've been on Goodreads for a long time but have never really gotten into groups before. I've been reading SF and fantasy for as long as I can remember; favorites include PKD (esp. Ubik and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch), Tom Disch (esp. The Genocides, Alfred Bester, and Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys. (I'm more into the Twilight Zone-y side of SF; the hard stuff kinda gives me a headache.) I'm always on the lookout for books I've overlooked, or anything that reads like a dream...

message 2222: by Sean (new)

Sean (doonskie) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Sean. I just got ontot goodreads yesterday and i was wanting to find a way to finds different types of books to read and looked at your group and liked what i saw, as far as the types of books you all were reading and though this is where i would get introduced to some new material. I got into sf/fan in '03 the game of thrones and i have been hooked into this genre ever since. I love how you guys have monthly books and decided to pick up The Summer Tree last night. So far so good!

message 2223: by V. Larkin (new)

V. Larkin Anderson (bridgebury) Hi everyone, I'm Victoria. I'm a 20-year-old college student and vociferous reader and writer of science fiction and fantasy. I haven't really been keeping track of which books I read, but I tend to read at least one a week, usually more. I've just finished King Rat by China Mieville. I've also read Perdido street station by him, and liked it so much that I searched out more books by him. Up until a couple years ago I read Anne McCaffery mostly for my science fiction and Mercedes Lackey for my fantasy, but I am definitely branching out now, and loving it!

I'm currently working on reading the novels nominated for Hugo Awards this year.

message 2224: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Vociferous? Does that mean you always read them out loud? :)

Welcome.

message 2225: by V. Larkin (new)

V. Larkin Anderson (bridgebury) Ooops, that word didn't mean what I thought it did at all! Just looked it up in a dictionary. I think the word I was looking for was... well, I can't think of it, though it's on the tip of my tongue (or my fingertips, in this case?). I meant that I read a lot of them. :)

message 2226: by Genia (last edited Jun 09, 2011 06:40PM) (new)

Genia Lukin Voracious.

For the Americans among us, without the 'u'.

message 2227: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Victoria :)

I'm saddened at the missed opportunity to quote from The Princess Bride.

message 2228: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Welcome, Victoria!

message 2229: by V. Larkin (new)

V. Larkin Anderson (bridgebury) Thank you Genia! That was exactly the word I was looking for.

Colin Taber Welcome to the group, Victoria!

message 2231: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Young-Turner | 23 comments Hi, I'm Cindy. I recently joined Goodreads and although I don't have as much time for reading as I'd like, I'm always interested in finding well-written, character-driven fantasy. Looks like you all have lots of suggestions and opinions. I recently finished reading Stephen King's The Gunslinger (Book 1 of the Dark Tower series) and loved it. I'm a recent Doctor Who convert also. Better late than never, right? Plus my first fantasy novel has just been published.

message 2232: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Cindy :)

Going to continue with The Dark Tower?

message 2233: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Young-Turner | 23 comments Thanks, Ala, and definitely, I can't wait to read the second Dark Tower book. I got into it initially because I read the Gunslinger comics that came out a couple years ago. I should also say that I read the revised edition of book 1. I'm curious to see how much changed from the original version.

message 2234: by Colin (new)

Colin Taber Welcome, Cindy!

I quite King's stuff. His prose is very easy reading!

message 2235: by John (new)

John Colgrove (ArcadiaDivine) | 3 comments Hi, I'm John. I just joined today. I can honestly say I haven't read much my entire life, but I'm changing that. I'm an aspiring Science Fiction author. Currently studying Dune because of the Omniscient POV, but I like the book itself so far.

message 2239: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (sandynathan) | 21 comments Hi! So many very cool people have said hello since I did a few days back. And very interesting ones. Susan, Allan of the British accent, Cindy, Victoria, Sean, I may have missed some. Nancy, Bhamielec. By the way, what a sad thing that our mortgage and housing industry people have so much time available now. I was an economics major and attended a well know BIZ school for a while. Go, mortages! Read on, Bhamielec! I too loved Stephen King's monster series. And Dune & its Chronicles. Look forward to getting to know y'all. Check out the Goodreads authors. Some write in the genres you like. Like me. The Angel & the Brown-eyed Boy

I’m Stavros. Needless to say, I love sci-fi – both movies and books. I am especially interested in alternative realities and multiple universes as backdrop. I teach digital animation and screenwriting at a tertiary college in Brisbane, Australia, and I am currently completing my PhD in multiform and multistrand narrative structures in Hollywood cinema. I have also recently completed my first sci-fi novel dealing with multiple realities. I look forward to becoming part of this warm and generous community!
