Looking forward to getting to know you guys and receiving some recommendations!

My name is Liam, I'm a fantasy author, new to goodreads, so take it easy on me.. Or hurl the abuse, I can take it!
A fan of a select few genres and books (mostly due to time contraints), but I do love sci-fi and fantasy epics, especially fantasy. My work has been influenced from several sources, such as J.R.R. Tolkein, and to some degree Terry Pratchett (for completely different reasons). I'd say the benchmark for the fantasy genre for me is Tolkein's Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. Enjoy writing fantasy in a parody-theme, with many unexpected twisted random elements.
Looking forward to working out how to use and navigate this forum, finding out as an author what you guys are in to, and opinions on artwork I have available!
My most recently read book is completely non-fantasy related; 'Let Every Breath' (Vladimir Vasiliev)

A few things about me: I love to read, I have four cats, and I am just now starting to writea little bit.
I adore books, usually finishing a book every few days. Right now I'm reading All Rights Reserved, Watership Down, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Scarlet
Hey! Hi! Howdy! Aloha! Yo!
Glad to have y'all! You have a couple days left to jump in for this month's books, a couple days to wait for next month's books, and right now we're all agog about The Orville, the new Star Trek, and the new books about to come out/that have just come out, a la The Stone Sky and Oathbringer!
Okay, that last part might just be me, but, well, until someone contradicts me, I'm letting it stand ;-)
Hope to see you in chats!

I'm Shanna. I run a market gardening business with my husband and spend a great deal of time running my kids around.
I flip flop between preferring fantasy and science fiction. Right now I'm on a sci-fi kick.
My favourite book is The Martian, and I'm always looking for more like that, no matter what the genre: Survival with minimal interpersonal conflicts.

I've been a lover of fantasy books most of my life, but (despite the fact that I loved sci-fi TV shows and movies) I didn't really get into sci-fi books until a few years ago. I still haven't read a ton, but I'm getting better at figuring out what things appeal to me most, so hopefully I'll find a lot more to read soon. I just read The Martian and 27 Hours, and now I'm (finally) reading A Wrinkle in Time.

I'm a bookseller from Germany and an avid reader of fantasy, with a bit of sci-fi on the side, but also basically interested in most other genres.
I'll be doing a little "sci-fi month" for myself in December, with classics such as The War of the Worlds and 2001: A Space Odyssey, but also a few newer books, and see how far I get with clearing my tbr of sci-fi. ;-)
This much said,
Happy reading!

Hi, Marge, Keep writing!!!!!

I'm a bit late with introducing myself, sorry sorry!
Well, I'm Merle and 23 years old atm. Born in The Netherlands and now living in New Zealand. Big change...
Hi, Merle, I've been to the Netherlands--loved it!
Love fantasy, so far ..."

Not too much into Sci-Fi but I do love Connie Willis and Philip K. Dick. I'm suddenly very interested in Steampunk and Cyberpunk so throw me some recommendations. Thanks. I look forward to some interesting discussions here.

Hey! I think Altered Carbon counts as cyberpunk and is quite good, have you read it?

I think those two series now officially count as "quest drugs." I'd call them "gateway drugs," but I think the Chronicles of Narnia might have some thoughts about someone else being considered a gate to anything. Welcome! We have two strong contenders for your interest I think next month (and I've completely forgotten what the side reads are, but they're also bound to be excellent.) Hope you find something you like!

My name is Tanya, and unsurprisingly I'm a sf fan (using sf for all speculative fantasy, as I enjoy books from across the genres).
I'm currently getting back into reading "my books", having spent the last year reading children's literature for a course. This means I'm very behind as far as recent releases go, but am aiming to catch up now.

On our Polls page this time our Random Fantasy one has all books that came out this year and last and are lesser known. It might give you a look at a few that are brand new. Voting starts on the 1st.

My first foray into fantasy was where it usually starts for people - a quite succinct little novel called The Hobbit. I think it was the total immersion in a different world that made me stick with the genre, and it's what propelled me to tackle the Lord of the Rings. I've read quite a few fantasy books since, but I don't keep myself to single genres. I also like science fiction, and have a soft spot for Asimov.
Hopefully I can have genre open up a bit more with some discussion and recommendation from you guys.

Hola everyone! Quick! Grab your copies of a book or four for next month's reads! How is it already October?

Love things like more asian : Japanese novel, romantic love story and some kind of psychological.
More about Western, Harry Potter series's also my cup of tea. Or some like adventurous and mysterious.
Hope I can get some recommendation some genre of books like that.
Nice to meet you =]

A long time ago when I was in Elementary and Middle School, my best friends were books. Many are kiddy ones, and I've added them to my 'Read' list, but I had a big falling out with reading when I got more into art. Maybe I would pick up a trilogy or a series, something easy to gloss through. But now I'm serious about getting back into the swing of things.
I started my fifty book goal pretty late into the year, but I'm determined to at least make that goal, and I figured joining some groups and seeing what they're reading would be a great idea! I still love art and I still want to create a Webtoon some day, but I believe that Webtoons don't just need pleasing to the eye artwork. They need a good story and good flow. I absolutely love fantasy books and I'm trying to get into more sci-fi, so please, give me all the suggestions!

Presently in Wyoming, 50 k from the nearest town– not much nightlife aside from coyote concerts. Beautiful here in the mountains.
Published lots of poems, magazine pieces, and book reviews. I love writing but lack the patience for the trad publishing shuffle, so now I post my work on WattPad.
I'm here for the littery chat.
Welcome new friends! Go vote for next month's books! Tell Sarah Anne to work faster on our Group Bookshelf Challenge polls (seriously, she is slacking and likes lots of reminders about how crucial this is...kidding, Sarah Anne, please don't kick me out! ;-) )
Poked the bear, check! Starting off October with a couple fewer fingers and a one item off my To Do list. Hashbrown, winning.

As a writer, I feel I have a freedom with fantasy and SciFi that I cannot find in other genres. But it is a freedom that also makes it more difficult because the environments cannot be taken for granted, yet you don't want to clog the text with too vast descriptions. You also need to create rules that make sense, and not only suit the purpose of the story.

Jurassic Park
Harry Potter series
Eragon
Prey by Michael Crichton
A Song of Ice and Fire series
Scarpetta books (not SFF)
Timeline
Hobbit
Red Dragon
and a lot more that I can't recollect. lol.

Welcome to Désirée, Ajith, and Monika! How do you feel about Russian fairytale retellings? There's sort of a small skirmish about the pros and cons, and I heartily encourage you to take sides immediately, especially if it's my side. ;-) Or, if you're not sure yet, try The Bear and the Nightingale, this month's fantasy read, and THEN let the words fly!

I read a lot when I was growing up but slowed way down since after life happened. Now that I’m older, I’m wanting to get back into it and starting fresh. I have a pretty good ‘to read’ list but any suggestions to help get back into the reading world would be great.
I finished the Dark Tower Series last week and then started the Lord of the Rings. After that I’m debating on Dune or Wheel of Time.
Anyways, look forward to chatting with you all!

Welcome! You sound like you'll fit right in! I'm sure Trike will appreciate another person to debate Star Wars canon with!

I know what you mean, but am tickled by the idea you might be a bookish ghost. I feel all groups ought to have a specter, to lend credibility. Delighted to have you!

I've probably read more books this year than any other and I must say my favorites so far have been;
Ready Player One (Best read ever)
The Humans
The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August
End Of The World Running Club
Dune (Current read; loving it!)
The Stone Man
How To Stop Time
Looking forward to some recommendations and chats!

For myself I would say stop with Dune, don't go farther down that series path. It seems to me he wrote the next few to satisfy a publisher, not from the heart.

Dune is a great book. I am not sure if he went down the money route or was drug down it.

I love the Martian as well! Funnily enough, I saw the movie trailer when it first was released and decided I couldn't wait that long to find out what happens, and so I bought the book on iBooks that second! I like survival stories as well, can you recommend any good ones?

I've been on GoodReads actively for three or four years and am a slow reader who struggles to finish more than 20 books a year. But I still love reading, and tend to overcommit myself to group and buddy reads. I'm looking forward to participating in the discussions here.

I loved both the book and the movie, well the move sans the ending. The Iron Man things was a bit much

Hi Beth!!! Welcome!! This is a very active club and a smart, fun group of people!! Enjoy!!

Hi Blue,
If you haven't already you should have a look at Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold. Excellent SF with a strong romantic backbone.
Should come with a health warning though, could get you addicted to the Vorkosigan saga, which is a hard habit to kick.

I'm Tabinda. I stumbled across this club while looking for reviews for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Saying that I'm glad I found this place would be an understatement.
Although I'm open to all genres, I've found that I enjoy Science Fiction a whole lot more because it stimulates my mind. Science Fiction has a way of forcing you to view things from diverse perspectives and just question things in general - and I guess that is why I appreciate this genre so much.
Recently, I've been delving in to all things Science Fiction. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi art and I recently finished watching all the Star Wars movies. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found this club.
Apart from reading, I enjoy composing music (I sing, play guitar and the keyboard) and sometimes I feel like that is the only thing keeping me sane. Oh, and I also own a dog. He's 8 years old/ Labrador. His name's Cheekoo and he's my absolute favorite. lol.
Looking forward to getting to know you all! :)

Thanks Richard! I'll definitely have a look at those!

Though I've been on goodreads since 2008, I'm only finding this group now - I guess I'm a slow study. At any rate, I was born in New Mexico, and yes it IS a part of the United States and has been since before I was born some 55 years ago.
I started reading fantasy and science fiction as a youngster in NM. My first fantasy (and still a favorite) was The Hobbit. I think my first sci-fi was The Runaway Robot. Of course since then I've read quite a bit more. I think my favorite fantasy authors are Raymond E. Feist, Michael Moorcock, and Terry Goodkind (hard to stop there, but I will for today) . Favorite sci-fi authors are Isaac Asimov, Phillip K. Dick, and William Gibson (again having to stop myself).
I moved to California in '87 and began working in animatronics, creating robots for theme parks. In '97, I began working in motion pictures and making big, rubber monsters for a number of award winning movies. (If you're interested, you can find a link to my IMDb page on my profile page.
I am an author. I began writing in the 7th grade, but never very seriously until college, when I met Raymond E. Feist. (Yes, our meeting was on purpose. No, I was not stalking him...much) At any rate he encouraged me to start writing seriously and so I did. I wrote a stage play that got produced and shortly after headed out to LA at the encouragement of one of my professors to enter the UCLA writing program.
Well, life happened the way it most often does and got in the way of those plans as it has a habit of doing and I ended up building robots and monsters instead of following my writing dreams. That little detour added many years to my journey to here, which is an author of 3 published fantasy novels and a 4th due out December 1st of this year. In the works, I have both science fiction and fantasy projects. Maybe someday we'll discuss them.
I really don't know what to expect from this group, but hope to have (or at least read) stimulating conversations about two subjects dear to my heart: science fiction and fantasy.
