Former Introduction Thread

In terms of Scifi I am a fan of the late great Iain M Banks, and I also enjoy the work of Derek Künsken. I've also enjoyed Andy Weir's The Martian, and Frederik Pohl's Gateway.
I am also a writer and creative writing tutor, hosting a podcast for creative writers called the Creative Writer's Toolbelt - a link for which I will put in the appropriate section (you can find it on iTunes). The latest episode is about planners and pantsers, which one are you?

Good morning, Andrew. Steampunk planner here. Welcome to the Great Library in the sky. Everything a reader of anything could want is found here, so settle back and enjoy the ride!

Is there a connection between Dr. Who and Dr. Seuss (Whoville)?
Lisa Redfern - digital & wax artist, photographer, writer and business person living in Northern California says, "Hello."

I think you'll have to tell him yourself. He's approachable and usually friendly. Though in his current incarnation he appears to have a bit of a mean streak.
I see we both like to create our own custom Goodreads book shelves....you have waaayy more than me! ;-)

I've not been comfortable with the Doctor since he was all hair and teeth with a long scarf.

I read from many genres, but sci-fi and fantasy are two of my favourites. This year I discovered John Scalzi, and I was instantly a fan. My two other favourite (contemporary) authors are Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss.
Looking forward to great group reads

I'm from Zimbabwe and travel a lot between there and South Africa.

-Damien Lake (Chronicles of the Crimson Kings)

Hi all! I read almost every genre, but I do like sci-fi and fantasy, I hope to find plenty of interesting suggestions on this forum. Happy reading to everyone :))

I have been informed by some older members of the club that I am not as widely read in SciFi/Fantasy as I should be.
I'm hoping to get great suggestions between this group and that group, and, hopefully, I will have some time to keep up with all the reading!

I'm a retired deputy head (Secondary) who taught in an inner city multicultural school in Cardiff.
I've been reading science fiction and fantasy for the last 45 years. I also enjoy all genres of pulp fiction and thrillers and crime.
Non fiction wise I enjoy reading about the politics, culture and history of the USA.
Other passions in life are classical music, travel and watching sports.
I look forward to being a member of the group and in the coming weeks to make some friends and adding my library of books to Goodreads.
Dave

My name is Angélique and I live in Ontario, Canada (though I was born in France). I'm an avid reader of science-fiction, fantasy and horror. I particularly like thought-provoking speculative fiction, like The Dispossessed or Mockingbird. I'm joining this group because it's a great way to discover books I wouldn't otherwise have known/read. I have The Carpet Makers ready for January!
Away from this, I'm a web/app developer. I'm also a book blogger (focused on Canadian fiction). I have two cats (one smart, one... well). I eat too much chocolate. And that's about it. :)

That said i like basic "rules " to be set up at the beginning of the book and then followed.
I am in my late 60's and find there is so much to chose from these days, gone are the days i would hunt for a good sc fi or fantasy book. Although i have been known to read way out there things eg just finished a Kyle Chan series.

We both have a love of reading, with my fiances extended into writing as well.
Although we do our best to not have favourite genres, and read a variety of things I have a passion for historical fiction. Kevin won't like me typing that, he doesn't believe in choosing favourites. Haha.
We look forward to reading with you all in the future!
- Crystal and Kevin
Just for the record, I'm Kevin. Thanks for introducing me, sunshine!

No, he just doesn't believe it's really necessarily to choose favourites such as colours or genres. If you like more then one colour, why do you have choose which one you like the best?

Mike hit the nail on the head there. The rules say so! I guess that makes me a renegade, fighting the powers that be, for equal liberty and justice for all.
Or maybe I'm just pretentious. Either way, I'm glad to be here. :)

The Burton and Swinburne series
Another one to look at might be the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson, depending on how brave you're feeling. This is historical fiction but the author classes it as science fiction due to some liberties he's taken with the story about the development of science and technology during that period. They're (very, very) long and can be a bit of an acquired taste but I found them to be great reads.
Of course, if you're working your way through Game Of Thrones these could be going on the back burner for a bit :-)

For the past few years, I've spent most moments of my free time writing (RPG supplements and a novel), but recently have been suffering from laptop-screen fatigue so now I'm trying to make time to read more honest-to-goodness books and complete runs of graphic novels. Just seeing the great interface and colorful titles here on Goodreads is inspiring for that, and I just now (today) finished Steven Brust's most recent Vlad Taltos novel, Hawk, and I've got a half-finished copy of John Dies at the End sitting in a drawer that will now hopefully see the light of day again. After that, I hope to read some more contemporary sci-fi and fantasy classics.
I've been very impressed with Goodreads as a site as both a reader and an author - very polished, elegant, lots of helpful links and tools - so I think this is going to work out splendidly.

As for books I've read and such, well now, that's completely huge list, many of which I've forgotten and some such.
Anyway that's all I'm going to say. hehe
