Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments ...ever watch the TV show House where (ironically) Hugh Laurie plays an American doctor? One of the subordinate characters is a doctor from Australia. At one point Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) calls him a "Brit". He remonstrates that he isn't a "Brit" he's from Australia, House says "The Queen's on your money, you're a Brit."

Andrew Chamberlain (andychamberlain) | 2 comments Good morning (or afternoon/evening depending on where you are on the globe). My name is Andy I'm a Scifi fan, and more lately, a fantasy fan - recent delights for me have included Patrick Rothfuss's work and Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy.

In terms of Scifi I am a fan of the late great Iain M Banks, and I also enjoy the work of Derek Künsken. I've also enjoyed Andy Weir's The Martian, and Frederik Pohl's Gateway.

I am also a writer and creative writing tutor, hosting a podcast for creative writers called the Creative Writer's Toolbelt - a link for which I will put in the appropriate section (you can find it on iTunes). The latest episode is about planners and pantsers, which one are you?

Lisa Redfern | 3 comments The little blue door creaks as it opens. A blonde female with glasses peaks out. "It REALLY is bigger on the inside!" she smiles. "Come in and check it out."

Is there a connection between Dr. Who and Dr. Seuss (Whoville)?

Lisa Redfern - digital & wax artist, photographer, writer and business person living in Northern California says, "Hello."

message 5005: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Of course...

Hi Lisa. Stop by whenever the TARDIS hits our time line

And tell the Doctor we said hi.

message 5006: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Redfern | 3 comments Hey Mike ~

I think you'll have to tell him yourself. He's approachable and usually friendly. Though in his current incarnation he appears to have a bit of a mean streak.

I see we both like to create our own custom Goodreads book shelves....you have waaayy more than me! ;-)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Only shows I've mismanaged my time more than you have...

I've not been comfortable with the Doctor since he was all hair and teeth with a long scarf.

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) Hi everyone, I'm new here. I've joined the group some time ago, but never posted. I have read 34 book from the group list and I have 28 more in my TBR. I'm currently reading The Rook and in the process of setting up my reading lists for 2015.

I read from many genres, but sci-fi and fantasy are two of my favourites. This year I discovered John Scalzi, and I was instantly a fan. My two other favourite (contemporary) authors are Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss.

Looking forward to great group reads

message 5011: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Jenson (tljenson) | 1 comments Hi everybody. I've been trying out several groups trying to find one where I fit in. My tastes in reading are pretty broad, though I gravitate towards science fiction and fantasy. I started to read science fiction and fantasy in middle school, and got interested in it from watching Star Wars, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and reading Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I've noticed there are a few science fiction and fantasy groups on Goodreads. Could anybody tell me how this one is different?

message 5012: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments ....well, I don't belong to all the others so I'm not sure.

message 5013: by Yolanda (new)

Yolanda Ramos (yramosseventhsentinel) | 17 comments Hi all. I'm busy working my way through the Dresden files and loving them. I like to read fantasy, thrillers and historicals i.e. Bernard Cornwall. I'm also self published and working on the second book of my series.
I'm from Zimbabwe and travel a lot between there and South Africa.

message 5014: by Damien (new)

Damien Lake | 38 comments Welcome, Yolanda, and everyone else new! It's a warm and welcoming group here, as I have discovered, and pretty supportive of writers. As a fellow self-published author, I wish you the best of luck. I know that in some ways, a second novel is even more difficult than a first, especially if they are in a series.

Don Dunham welcome Timothy. I belong to just this one but would be interested in what you have to say about the several you are checking out.

message 5017: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all! I read almost every genre, but I do like sci-fi and fantasy, I hope to find plenty of interesting suggestions on this forum. Happy reading to everyone :))

You'll undoubtedly get plenty of suggestions.

message 5019: by Marina (new)

Marina (marina92) | 1 comments Hello all! My name is Marina. I work in a public library where I happily coordinate a face-to-face Science Fiction and Fantasy book club that meets once a month.
I have been informed by some older members of the club that I am not as widely read in SciFi/Fantasy as I should be.
I'm hoping to get great suggestions between this group and that group, and, hopefully, I will have some time to keep up with all the reading!

:)

Welcome.

message 5021: by Chris (new)

Chris (2manyhounds) Hello All. My name is Chris and was born 40 some odd years ago. Grew up south of Seattle in the burbs. When I graduated from high school I headed out to see what was what. Spent about 3 years traveling around the U.S., then joined the U.S.C.G and traveled about half the world. I currently live in Maryland with my wife and dogs and cats. My reading tastes cover a broad spectrum, but always fall back to sci-fi and/or fantasy. I listen to a lot of audio books due to going partially blind in one eye so I have trouble focusing and get headaches. I love audio though. My wife calls it cheating because I can listen throughout the day so I go through some material. I'm also into golf, woodworking, and gardening. So if you have questions in those fields or whatever, feel free to drop me a line. Thanks all, Chris

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi Chris. Welcome. I love audio books also, and also tend to listen throughout the day.

message 5023: by David (new)

David Blyth | 12 comments Hi I'm Dave currently living in the small town of Maesteg in the South Wales Valleys.
I'm a retired deputy head (Secondary) who taught in an inner city multicultural school in Cardiff.
I've been reading science fiction and fantasy for the last 45 years. I also enjoy all genres of pulp fiction and thrillers and crime.
Non fiction wise I enjoy reading about the politics, culture and history of the USA.
Other passions in life are classical music, travel and watching sports.
I look forward to being a member of the group and in the coming weeks to make some friends and adding my library of books to Goodreads.

Dave

David Monster (davidmonster) | 2 comments Hello. I'm David Monster. I'm a writer. You can check my page to see my books. Don't know what else to say. I work in Film & TV Production, and aspire to be a full time novelist & writer. Thank you.

Angélique (MapleBooks) (maplebooks) Hello there,
My name is Angélique and I live in Ontario, Canada (though I was born in France). I'm an avid reader of science-fiction, fantasy and horror. I particularly like thought-provoking speculative fiction, like The Dispossessed or Mockingbird. I'm joining this group because it's a great way to discover books I wouldn't otherwise have known/read. I have The Carpet Makers ready for January!
Away from this, I'm a web/app developer. I'm also a book blogger (focused on Canadian fiction). I have two cats (one smart, one... well). I eat too much chocolate. And that's about it. :)

message 5030: by Kateb (last edited Dec 29, 2014 01:49PM) (new)

Kateb | 959 comments Hi My name is Kate. I have been reading sc if since i was 8, starting with Asimov. I like a variety of books and feel annoyed when someone puts a book down because of poor writing style, since I am more interested in the concept and how they run with it.
That said i like basic "rules " to be set up at the beginning of the book and then followed.
I am in my late 60's and find there is so much to chose from these days, gone are the days i would hunt for a good sc fi or fantasy book. Although i have been known to read way out there things eg just finished a Kyle Chan series.

message 5034: by Crystal Dawn (new)

Crystal Dawn (crystal_dawn) | 9 comments Hello, My name is Crystal. My fiance (Kevin) and I recently found the group so we thought we would join together, to inspire us throughout the new year; but also to grant us opportunities for connections, discussions and ultimatley friends.

We both have a love of reading, with my fiances extended into writing as well.
Although we do our best to not have favourite genres, and read a variety of things I have a passion for historical fiction. Kevin won't like me typing that, he doesn't believe in choosing favourites. Haha.

We look forward to reading with you all in the future!

- Crystal and Kevin

message 5038: by Crystal Dawn (new)

Crystal Dawn (crystal_dawn) | 9 comments Haha nice nitpick!
No, he just doesn't believe it's really necessarily to choose favourites such as colours or genres. If you like more then one colour, why do you have choose which one you like the best?

message 5039: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Because the rules say so!!!! You must have a favorite color, a favorite food, a favorite, book, a favorite movie....and stuff!

message 5040: by [deleted user] (new)

Mike hit the nail on the head there. The rules say so! I guess that makes me a renegade, fighting the powers that be, for equal liberty and justice for all.

Or maybe I'm just pretentious. Either way, I'm glad to be here. :)

message 5041: by Kate (new)

Kate (sleepingforests) | 2 comments Hello everyone, I've just joined. I read all sorts but I particularly enjoy sci-fi and fantasy and I'm determined to read more of it this year. A sci-fi novel I loved in 2014 was The Blood of Angels by Johanna Sinisalo :)

Angélique (MapleBooks) (maplebooks) Welcome Kate! I just joined too :)

message 5043: by Katie (new)

Katie | 5 comments Hello! I'm a PhD student and until recently I mostly read non-fiction books, mainly because I found it difficult to find fiction books that I liked. However I have a renewed love for SF after reading Christopher Priest. I joined this group for inspiration for further reading (which was a good move). Currently reading The Carpet Makers and also (slowly) making my way through the Game of Thrones series.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Welcome Katie.

message 5045: by N.P. (new)

N.P. (neilgr) Hi Katie, welcome to the group. I'm not too sure what kind of tastes you have but if you're looking for some suggestions a couple of quick ones, series-wise, might be the books by Mark Hodder based around his characters Burton and Swinburne who are detectives in Victorian England. The books are set in a Steampunk version of London and are very entertaining. You can find a link to the Goodreads section below.

The Burton and Swinburne series

Another one to look at might be the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson, depending on how brave you're feeling. This is historical fiction but the author classes it as science fiction due to some liberties he's taken with the story about the development of science and technology during that period. They're (very, very) long and can be a bit of an acquired taste but I found them to be great reads.

Of course, if you're working your way through Game Of Thrones these could be going on the back burner for a bit :-)

message 5046: by Katie (new)

Katie | 5 comments Thanks for the suggestions! I am keen to try lots of new authors so these are very helpful.

message 5047: by Matt (new)

Matt Banach | 1 comments Hi, my name is Matt and I'm new to Goodreads and whatnot.

For the past few years, I've spent most moments of my free time writing (RPG supplements and a novel), but recently have been suffering from laptop-screen fatigue so now I'm trying to make time to read more honest-to-goodness books and complete runs of graphic novels. Just seeing the great interface and colorful titles here on Goodreads is inspiring for that, and I just now (today) finished Steven Brust's most recent Vlad Taltos novel, Hawk, and I've got a half-finished copy of John Dies at the End sitting in a drawer that will now hopefully see the light of day again. After that, I hope to read some more contemporary sci-fi and fantasy classics.

I've been very impressed with Goodreads as a site as both a reader and an author - very polished, elegant, lots of helpful links and tools - so I think this is going to work out splendidly.

message 5050: by Dionne (new)

Dionne | 21 comments Hi there, I haven't posted here since I joined. Mainly because of my being super busy. I've been working, and writing (not exactly in that order). At the moment, I'm working on my book 1 of a series to be published some time this year (hopefully). I already have a book out on Amazon called Eternal Youths: The Big Switch (you can check that out, if you want).

As for books I've read and such, well now, that's completely huge list, many of which I've forgotten and some such.

Anyway that's all I'm going to say. hehe
