It's time to start up the nominations for the September Science Fiction Theme: Colonization. As a reminder, everyone gets a nomination and a second and it must be available as a ebook. Once we have 5 or 6 seconded books, I'll open up a poll ... so let's see what goodness you all come up with

Nominated Books
Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell
Genellan: Planetfall by Scott G. Gier
The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton
Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon
The Einstein Intersection by Samuel R. Delany

Robin I wonder whether Octavia Butler's _Dawn_ would be a good candidate. It's an excellent book, but it is the first part of a trilogy, and you may be wishing to avoid those. It's a spin on the usual colonization story, because it is somebody else colonizing on top of us. Sort of.

Brad Theado (readerxx) The Reality Dysfunction by Peter Hamilton

Alas, Dawn does not have an ebook edition, so far as I can tell.

I'd like to nominate Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. I suppose a failing colony is still about Colonization.

I've read this 2 or 3 times and I was thinking of nominating it ....so I'll second it.

Bigal-sa | 28 comments Genellan: Planetfall by Scott Gier (free from Baen).

(I'm one of those who absolutely hated Red Mars!)

Paul Vincent (astronomicon) | 41 comments I'm assuming it's bad form to nominate your own book?

Pretty much ... :) ... thanks for double checking though.

Joe Occhipinti (joeoccchipinti) | 5 comments I nominate Dune and The Sparrow.

message 12: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnahr) I'll second The Sparrow. It's flitted across my radar a few times in the last several months. Lots of really good reviews.

Carey Bostwick (carebear11) | 40 comments I second the nomination for Genellan: Planetfall by Scott Gier.

Do you mean The Reality Dysfunction? I totally second that!

message 15: by Robin (new)

Robin Correct. You can only get the entirety of the Trilogy at amazon. I withdraw the nomination.

Apparently several of her books are being released on Kindle on July 24. I found them available for pre-order:

Robin Oh, thank you, Greg. That's very good news.

I can get links for the next three in his set, but not the original, so I've posted the GR link above.

message 19: by Robin (new)

Robin I second Remnant Population.

(that's okay, right? I withdrew my prior nomination).

Same here

This is a good list so far ... I disappear for a few hours and you all came up with a brilliant list ... let's add one more for an even 6 and then the poll can open tomorrow ...

message 22: by Charles (new)

Charles (nogdog) The Einstein Intersection by Samuel R. Delany (an alien race colonizing Earth -- not invading, mind you, just picking up the leftovers, so to speak)

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 21, 2012 07:48PM) (new)

I'll second The Einstein Intersection. I'll have to save an Octavia Butler nomination or second for an other month. (I swear the Kindle edition wasn't listed yesterday!)

message 24: by Charles (new)

Charles (nogdog) I've been meaning to read Einstein Interesection for a month or so now, and then it occurred to me it could be considered a colonization story. :-) I also noticed while looking it up on Amazon that Trouble on Triton: An Ambiguous Heterotopia (originally released just as Triton) is enKindled. Loved it when I read it many years ago, so that's on my to-read list, too.

That's on my reread list too and I came within hair of putting on my nomination list the last time. I also think Delany might be the finest prose writer in science fiction.

message 26: by Alan (new)

Alan Denham (alandenham) | 69 comments I read "The Sparrow" about 5 years ago. Recently a friend (who is now at some risk of becoming an ex-friend!) borrowed it and lost it. If I am to join the discussion I shall have to get a new copy, probably on Kindle - but I second it anyway.
