Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Ah I C. Makes sense. thanks for the info Nichole.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I changed the topic to reflect my frustration with the news I am hearing today. I am SO upset about hearing the death of the little girl in Tracy, CA. 8 y o Sandra Candu. She was allegedly sexually assaulted, murdered and stuffed in a suitcase by a Sunday school teacher. I had stopped watching the news years ago because of news like this but then started watching again because I got interested in the Casey Anthony case. What are your thoughts?

message 203: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) Kenjii, I heard through a 2nd party so it may have some holes in it. The Sunday school teacher was said to have molested another girl age 7 and the 7 year old lived. She in trouble for that one. So I guess she figured out that if she was dead she couldn't tell on her. The slip up was the 8 y o Sandra Candu was friends with the Sunday school teachers daughter. This kind of stuff really pisses me off.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Yeah. I know. I can't really do anything but I want to look up my petition site and see what I can do. There has got to be a way to keep kids safer.

message 205: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) It's one thing to try and keep kids safe from strangers, but when it's one of your kids friends "family members" that's when it get harder to control. You just don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Let me know what you find out.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Yes. I know it is hard when that happens. You do your best to keep things in order in your life but things happen. It is just so aggravating to hear these child murders back to back in the news like this. I signed up here:

http://www.care2.com/

It is A LOT so search with caution =D. Do not feel overwhelmed and quit. If I find out about anything pertaining to child safety (laws) I will post them here.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Here is a petition. Has 37 siggy's need 1000. Asking for the death penalty or life sentence for child abusers and molesters.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/life...

I just feel like what can I do you know? My friend showed me this site. I can't go out and knock on doors or stand out and get siggy's like they do for voter's registration. But I can do this.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Upset with Goodwill. Kids books are still 50 cents each but they threw them in a bin now. Kids chapter books are a dollar. Adult paperbacks used to be 60 cents each but are now $1 each. Hardbacks are $2 each now (instead of $1) unless marked otherwise (some are more expensive). Cookbooks are $2 each. It's getting to the point that it's almost cheaper to go to the used bookstore (they sell for half the cover price), and find exactly what I want. The more they raise the prices, the fewer books I'll buy there. And they don't announce the price changes either. (Ticked off at them now and then anyway. For example, kids pajamas are $3 each. I found one on a hanger with a top and a bottom to it. I take it to the register and they charge me $3 for EACH PIECE! gggrrrr Considering this is used clothing, that's getting expensive. I can do better sometimes finding sales after the season. They'll put themselves outta business at this rate.)

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments It's a good place to vent Briansgirl. Vent away. Sometimes people just tick u off and its like WTF??

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I won a book on Goodreads First Reads! Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. This is the third time I've won a book on GR.

message 215: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1245 comments Congrats! As is typical for me, I have never won. Glad to hear that someone actually does or I would think the whole thing is fake!

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Thanks Melissa.

message 217: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1245 comments BTW, I liked her books. Giffin is a great writer.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I've never heard of this author before so looking forward to reading this. Bit of a twist on regular romances though as the good girl in the story has a wild night and sleeps with her best friends fiancee and as the wedding draws closer discovers she has feelings for him.

So happy for you!!!! I've heard good things about that book, I've never read it, but it should not be too shabby. Anyways everything is better when it's free, right?

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) oh yes, definetly better. lol Good to hear rave reviews for the author.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Would you believe that I spent hours today (and yes, it was hours, lol) sorting all my challenge book lists out. Crosslisting as much as possible between overlapping challenges. Trying to narrow it down to a managable number. lol I got most of the read the month for August and September books worked into the Armchair traveller's unite. I still have books I wasn't able to crosslist that are only on one list I'll have to get to. As many of those are on quarterly lists, I can just hope some of them fill the summer month's monthly reading challenges. I then edited all the lists on my reading list thread and updated all my printouts.

Now... off to go read a book that isn't on any list. LOL

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Briansgirl...WTF? LOL. You know I am teasing right? I am just as picky about trying to get my shelves down to about 20 books per shelf. B/c I read so many series, or an abundance of a certain theme it is impossible to keep certain shelves under 50 books. Anyhow, I do like doing my challenges. I like going over each one and cross checking to see which books can fit into how many slots after I am done reading. I don't intentionally cross-list but it helps. Now, if I have in mind a book to cross-list, I do.

Do you wait to check if you can cross-list a book before posting it on a challenge?

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Kenjii wrote: "Do you wait to check if you can cross-list a book before posting it on a challenge? "

Not always. But as my mood changes, I frequenly make changes to my lists. lol Things like the Armchair travellers challenge was so easy for Europe since I have 11 books taking place in Europe in a set where I've only read one book. So I choose from those to fill the 7 for that list. But started looking at the time frame for that challenge (Jun 21-Sep 21), and started looking to see how many I could use to do the read the month challenges as August and September are big months and it worked out quite nicely that most of those books will work for read the month's as well. Today I was double checking. I'm crosslisting like crazy because since I've signed up for everything, I still came up with 17 books to read or finish for May. lol If I don't pare down or crosslist, I won't get the challenges finished. (Not that I have to, but trying to anyway). And, of course, still want to read a few books that won't fit into any challenge. My Nurse's/EMT book where any character is in the medical field I made sure the man was a doctor so that it would also fit the Men We Love doctor slot. Same with athlete on both lists. Trying to work quarterly books into monthly lists where I can so I wont forget to read them. So today I penciled onto a printout a month next to them when I plan on reading them so I know which ones I have left that I need to eventually find a way to get to. Maybe they'll fit the June monthly challenge. lol

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I'd bang my head against the wall planning any further than the current month. But it is nice to see that you can do it. If there is a question on a challenge I am unfamiliar with it will be fun to see how far ahead u are, lol.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Anybody with a bit of religious upbringing, spiritual belief or plain and simple faith knows what it means to be convicted. In simple terms. When you feel in your heart that you have to turn away from something or can no longer tolerate doing the same thing. To even think about doing it causes discomfort.

Since hearing about amazon de-ranking GLBT authors I have not bought or sold anything at their site. Even now that they say they have fixed or are fixing the "glitch" I still don't believe it was a tech problem in the first place. So I am going to shop at Barnes and Noble.com and put my membership to use, lol. Also I am hoping other people listen to their heart. I was thinking "Well, I am sure no one else feels the same way." Then I signed a petition with over 26,000 siggy's. So yeah. Conviction is something.

I only went as far as August and September and that was to see if I could get the Armchair Traveller's Unite books to fit another challenge and got lucky that most of the travel books completed 80% of August and September for me. Had a bit of a snag with so many U's and E's. Resorted to at least once, using an author's first name that is Elizabeth. hehe The other two E's are an author's last name and a book title, but had trouble finding a third. Don't remind me there are alot more E's in November and December to come later for Read the Month! lol

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) It's only when you start packing to move house do you realise how much crap you've accumulated! And regret your obession with books, shoes, handbags, jewellery, clothes - and your inability to throw shit out (you know, those ornaments someone gave you when you were 8, but... they were a gift...)
Oh, and your ability to procrastinate! If only I'd started sorting all the stuff out a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't be trying to pack & sort now...
Roll on Saturday...

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Annie: It is a rule to start each rant with WTF on this thread....lol...hehe...j/k but it would be funny. I have recently moved back to CA from TX after living there for 7 years. Thankfully I just had to pack my stuff. I had 4 35 gallon ( I think could b bigger) of books ONLY! So yeah I can attest to that. I try and plan but pfft seems like when the day comes so much is piled on from regular day to day that planning and packing and sorting can become real tedious and all sorts of things end up trashed.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I have Saving Grace by Julie Garwood on my list to read for the May monthly challenge as some of us had previously discussed that a medieval warrior could be considered an athelete. I now have the perfect bookmark to use when I start this book. I'd stopped by the author's website recently and saw where she said if you'd like a bookmark send her a SASE. It arrived today. It's glossy black and purple with her name on one side, and a list of all of her novels on the back with a shiny tassel. It came with a note on bright pink paper that says: Here's the bookmark you requested. Hope you enjoy my stories. And signed by the author. :)

(I've discovered quite a few authors do this if you visit their official websites. I have bookmarks (some signed, some not) from Lorna Bartlett, Carla Neggers, Debbie Macomber, Leigh Michaels, Julia Ross, and perhaps a couple more.)

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Sweet! I want a free bookmark. I'd like a hot looking one of a cowboy or something. LOL. Sorry Briansgirl I know you like a certain kind of romance. I will always want to picture a certain ideal when it comes to romance. Cowboys come first. Hehe. Thanks for the tip.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) ARGH!!!! I have some of those put together yourself bookshelves. They have little plastic pegs you sit the shelves on. Two broke on one side of a heavy shelf and I had to take all the books out and try to fix it. Luckily I had two spare pegs. (I'll have to buy more, metal instead of plastic if I can find them). Trouble is... the front of the pegs break off, leaving the stem stuck into the hole on the side of the bookcase. I have one hole plugged on the left side, and I have five holes plugged on the right side. So there are three shelf settings that are impossible to use anymore. :( The heavier books I moved to the lower shelf and moved other books up rearranging to fit the new shelf height. I just hate when this happens and as you can see, lol, it isn't the first time. Yet.... I don't have room for nor can I afford new bookcases... and I hate to get rid of books I havn't read yet... then again, I hate to get rid of books I've read if I liked them. lol

Believe it or not, golf tees work much better than those plastic pegs. I think the extra length helps. My husband works in the golf business and I had to find some way to use all of the tees I find lying around. :)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Thanks for the tip Valerie. Next time if I can't find any replacement pegs, I'll dig in the pouch in my fiance's golf bag!

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I replied to a post on my local freecycle. Someone bought a 6pk of cherry tomato plants but only wanted one so was gifting the other 5. When I called her to get her address, I asked if she was the same house that has given away romance books. She said yes, so I told her I knew exactly where she lived. When I drove over to pick up the plants, she asked if I'd like some more books. Of course, I said yes. I got a huge sack of 42 books. Over half of them are Harlequin Desires, a couple loveswept and Harlequin Intrique's. I've got the 3 Nora Roberts books so will try to trade those into the local used bookstore but don't have any of the rest. :)

message 235: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) Ok, I'm having a WTF moment. Someone requested me as a friend, I have a question to answer to be able to request friendship. They lied, I felt bad not accepting them because they didn't have any friends or books for that matter. I think I"m mostly P.O.'D at myself for feeling guilty. I really want to delete them and think of a different question to answer. Anyone else ever feel like that or am I the only Dork?

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Don't feel bad about not adding somebody. If you don't know them, you shouldn't feel bad not adding them.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Yeah I wouldn't feel bad about not adding, for my example, authors I have nothing in common with. Or deleting people that have never even sent a message! So if you feel bad its OK. You can't help how you feel but there are a lot of lurkers and friend-sluts that just want their lists to have tons of friends with no regard to building friendships or having anything in common.

message 238: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) Thanks Briansgirl, and Kenjii. I'm going to delete that person now. I guess I just need a little support.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I had to chuckle about this and rang the library. I picked up this morning a list they had. They print 3x8 inch lists on colored paper for things like women detectives, books made into movies, edible fiction, etc and this list was: If you like Harry Potter... and listed other YA series or titles you might like. I noticed Ella Enchanted on it but they listed the author as Jane Langton. I have this on my shelf to read for my fairy tale book and know its by Gail Carson Levine. So I told them of their typo error so they can fix it as it'll cause some confusion when someone goes looking for it.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Totally awesome. I am reading Texas Baby and commented on the status that I wish the Texas the author novelizes was like that when I lived there (esp.the cowboys, lol). She tweeted me back! Cool!

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I need to get some reading done before bed. Its been a long day. The gardeners were here and I also had a friend over. So I think I will head to bed early and crack open a book.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) OMG!!!
I was out-of-state today and quickly dropped into a thrift shop a few minutes before it closed. I was scanning their bookshelves. Books were 25 cents each or 10/$1. I bought exactly 10 books. I picked up four Reader's Digest Condensed books along with several paperbacks. Even Emma by Jane Austin (not bad for a dime). While flipping through one of the Reader's Disgest books (the one containing: To Kill A Mockingbird, The Agony and The Ectasy, The Winter of Our Discontent and Fate is the Hunter) I discovered the last owner/reader had left a bookmark inside the book. I did a double take to see if what I was looking at was real. A real unfolded crisp $20 bill was inside the book! I'm still stunned. The bill is a 1963 series printing and this particular Reader's Digest book was printed in 1961. To think not only did someone leave it there all those years ago, but how many hands it's been through to get to a thrift shop and for me to buy it and it was still in the book. WOW!

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Wow indeed =D.

I don't know how this happens but I always seemed to be in the middle of 4 books or more. Now with me reading e-books. I have at least 2 of those going PLUS 4 or so PB and then I run across LIB books I have been waiting for.

I don't have a prob keeping up with the story lines but I can't keeping adding to the #reading stack. It's ridiculous!

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Pedophile Boyfriends

Ok so the news headlines have me totally Po'ed right. I mean really people? I am not "up" on the law but the difference between one sex offense and another could be age or object used. It is sickening to think that women are allowing these men around their BABIES. Not that it is OK for violent crimes to happen to anyone but at least a teen would having a fighting chance. What can a 3,4,5 y.o do? Ladies. WTF!?!?
