SOLVED. YA trilogy mid 90s about guys who could shape shift into panthers [s]

Hi guys,
Released around the same time of the Vampire Diaries (90s) and similar themes. Instead of vampires, they could shapeshift into big cats (I think black panther but not sure). Main character Garth & female protagonist I can't recall. Perhaps 'L' name? As usual high school setting, girl falls for guy, guy tries to remain distant, yadda yadda. Sorry details are so sketchy.

Actually guys I think I'm totally confused. I think I am confusing both the Dark Moon Legacy trilogy with the Year of the Cat trilogy, because the character Garth is from the former and the transforming into the panther is from the latter. I can't believe you (Gerd and Andria) managed to work it out anyway - thank you and well done! Interesting they are both from the same 'Nightmare' series of books, hence the confusion...
