Beth stayed back; she didn't want to hear it from some doctor. Ash walked back to her after listening to what the doctor had to say. Tears were rolling down his cheeks again, and his hands covered his mouth. Beth braced for news of her brother's death, but when Ash removed his hands, he was smiling.
"He's gonna make it, Beth," he whispered.
"He's gonna make it, Beth," he whispered.

He looked almost...peaceful lying there, even with the cuts and bandages. She was slowly stroking his shaggy, blond hair when she caught sight of his huge green eyes open.
"Beth?" he asked, seemingly confused.
"Yeah, Mark, it's me," she answered, "You're gonna be alright." He smiled.
"I love you, Beth. You're the best little sister any guy could ask for." And he fell back asleep, the smile still on his lips. Tears filled Beth's eyes, but she blinked them back. He had been awake! He had talked to her!

Beth looked back at Mark. "He's gonna be fine." Ash comforted. "You don't need to watch him every moment of the day."
She pulled her arm back. "But...but what if he wakes up again?" Ash smiled.
"He'll be alright Beth, but you need to go home. You have school tomorrow." Beth looked confused.
"What day of the week is it?" she asked.
"Sunday, now come on." The entire ride home was silent. Ash had told Beth's parents that he'd drop her off at home and look in on her periodically. Her parents seemed fine with it, as they trusted Ash.

He was almost out the door when he realized Beth had no idea as to what the plan was. So, he left her a note, which read:
Beth,
Your parents wanted me to drop you off here. I'll be back to eat supper. Sleep well! :)
Love,
Ash

"Here," he said, handing her a bag from Burger King, "I thought you might want something to eat."

In a strange way, but it was like old times. Good times, Beth thought. Sure, she liked "officially" dating Ash, but sometimes she still missed the old, uncomplicated friendship they had shared.
Never in her life. And for the first time, she wondered if trading Ash's friendship for a relationship had been a bad idea. I mean, sure, they both liked each other, but how long would it last? Most high school relationships didn't last long. However, she hoped that they would be the exception.

For a moment, she almost regretted having said "yes." But then she remembered how much she DID like Ash and how she would have regretted saying "no."

Next thing Beth knew, she was being gently shaken awake.
"Beth, Beth, you have to get up." Her eyes fluttered open to the tired eyes of Ash.
"Hmmm? Oh, good morning Ash. Why are you here?"
"I slept in the guest room. Your parents are still at the hospital with Mark. They called about midnight and told me to just stay in the guest room for the night. Now, Beth, you have to get up so we can go to school." Beth stumbled out of bed and glanced at the clock. 5:15.
"But Ash, we don't have to leave until 6:50. School doesn't start until 7:15."
"I know, but I've got to stop by my house to shower and change. I've been in the same clothes since yesterday."
"Oh," was all Beth could say. Then she hurried to get dressed.

Afterwards, they headed to school. Everyone stared at them as if she and Ash were aliens. Obviously, word had gotten around that Mark was in the hospital. Well, it was no surprise. It was a small town.

Becca smiled a smug smile.
"Awww, look at the lovebirds." Brody stared at her.
"Cut it out, Becca." She looked shocked.
"I beg your PARDON! How DARE you speak that way to me! I am a lady!" she exclaimed and stormed away. Brody laughed and rolled his eyes.
"She'll come back before 2nd block is over, begging me for my mercy."

Becca stormed back over.
"Give me my books, Brady." Brady looked down, realizing that he was carrying her books. He shoved them at her.
"Here," he said, "Take them."

"Its Brody."
"Right, Brody. Who long have you and Becca been dating?"
"About a week." Bridge replied.
Okay, now what? Ash fumbled for something else to say.
"Ah, I see," he finally said.
"Look dude," Brady began, "You can have her. But I have to warn you. She can be quite a pain in the-"
"No, no" Ash cut in, "It's quite alright." He pulled Beth a little closer, "Beth and I are dating."

"Are you seriously willing to give up Becca without a fight?" Ash asked.
"Well, um, she's sort of-"
"I know, I know. But why are you dating her?"
"Yeah, I know, it sounds stupid, but I mean, it happens. I mean, don't you girls ever like a guy because he's 'cute?'"

"Well," Brody sucked in a deep breath, "I don't know. That's why I've put it off so long. She'll want to kill me, I DO know that, but other than that..." he shrugged, "I just don't know."

Beth sighed. "Don't worry,Becca doesn't date the same guys for long. She'll break up with you."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better, Beth?"

"Are you scared of her?" Ash asked.
