Beth blushed, then realized that Ash was in her room. "What are you doing here?!" She yelled.
"Beth," Ash said softly, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have blown up, and...well..." He blushed, "I was worried about you."
Ash smiled a tiny smile. "It's alright, Beth. Look, I know it wasn't your fault. It just...came out. I shouldn't have said it." He smiled again and wiped a few stray tears from Beth's face. "After all, you're the best friend I've ever had."

"Yeah, sure," Ash said, thinking about how awkward he was about to make the conversation. You see, he kind of liked Beth. And not just because Becca turned him down.
(I know, I know, it's getting sappy, but I couldn't resist adding that in.:) )

Beth sat on her bed. Okay, this was awkward. Ash was in her room. But they were just friends, right? Just friends.
Ash looked at Beth, and then sat next to her. They were uncomfortably close.
((Okay, here goes my attempt at knowing what's inside a teenage boy's mind. Haha!))
"So, uh...hey Beth?"
"Yeah?"
"I was wondering..." Ash gulped. He was unbelievably nervous, "Would you like to...you know...go out sometime?"
"YES!!!" Beth exclaimed right before she blushed a bright red. "I mean, uh, sure, sounds great!" Ash smiled. She liked him as much as he liked her.

Ash said yes, and then left her house. Beth set about trying to find an outfit for her date.
Ash could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He was going on a date with Beth! He couldn't believe it! Just where exactly he wasn't sure, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was that he and Beth were going on a date.
A dress or...or jeans or...or what? She didn't even know where they were going. Just when her day was getting better.

There, she thought to herself, It's done. Don't worry about it. He doesn't care how you look. But she couldn't help but be a little worried.
To the park. Okay, maybe not the most romantic place on earth, but it's where they met, six years ago, almost to the day. Beth was having trouble with a couple of guys teasing her, and Ash stepped in to save the day. They both thought of the moment as they sat on the park bench, in silence, staring up at the starry night sky.
There was something about him, maybe the way his dark hair fell or the softness of his big, blue eyes that Beth had never noticed before. She smiled. "You know, this is where we met."

"You were not! I was totally capable of taking care of myself!"
Ash chuckled. "I know."
What should she say next? Eek, she didn't want to make the conversation awkward but...ugggggggghhhh! Why should she worry about this? She never had to worry about this when Ash was just her friend. So, why now?

"So, ugh-" she started.

"Did you roll your eyes at me?" Beth teased.
"Don't worry," she said, "I'm not going to hurt you! Geez Ash! You'd think that I was mean to you or something!"

About nine, Ash said, "We should probably be getting back. My mom will kill me if we're too terribly late."
Beth grinned, "Who's listening to their parents now? But you are right. We need to go."
Beth grinned, "Who's listening to their parents now? But you are right. We need to go."
They both spent the ride home daydreaming. About each other, about their date, and about what was happening between them.

The next day of school was weird, though.
They didn't see each other. Not one bit. Not at lunch or after school. And Ash couldn't help but wonder why.

When she finally picked up, Ash was mad.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"What do you mean?"
"I didn't see you today at school. You didn't pick up your phone. What's going on? Is there something you need to tell me." He heard Beth inhale shakily.
"It's a long story, Ash. You wouldn't want to hear it." Okay, something was going on. It wasn't what he had thought either.
"Yes I do, Beth," he answered gently. She inhaled shakily again.
"Ash, my older brother was in a car accident. I've been at the hospital all day, and I've had my phone off. I couldn't text you or call you, or-" She burst into tears.

This made Beth cry even more. "He's never going to be the same. The crash messed up his brain."
"Beth, I-I'm coming over."
((I know, I know, kind of...disturbing. But it needed something other than mushy-gushy "I love you" stuff.))
He hung up the phone and rushed over to the hospital. He found Beth waiting in the lobby. Her eyes were red and puffy, the tears still streaming down her cheeks. She was pacing the floor. When the door opened, she looked up and ran into Ash's arms.
"Beth, I'm so sorry," was all he could get out before the first tear slid down his own cheek.

"Oh my gosh, Beth, I am so sorry. I know how you feel though. He's like a brother to me." Even though he was two years older than the two of them, Mark, Beth's brother, was the older brother Ash had never had. As the only child of two work-aholic parents, Ash never really got any attention from his parents. Mark taught him how to ride a bike, play catch, and play board games. It hurt Ash as much as it hurt Beth to see this happen to Mark.
