"Um..sort of." he said, rubbing the back of his neck and slamming his locker closed.
"Well, I was going to talk to her, but then that new transfer student, Brody or something, walked up and talked to her and, well, yeah." he trailed off.

Ash runs over to Becca, his eyes shining and a sheen of sweat forming on his forehead. "Hi, Becca," he says softly and bashfully. She looks at him kind of funny. "Do I know you?"
"Oh yeah, we sit across from each other, right?" Ash nodded. "Well, it's nice to see you....um..."
"Ash," he said, completing her sentence.
"Yeah, Ash. Well, Ash, I'd like to introduce you to someone. Ash, this is my boyfriend, Brody."
"Ash," he said, completing her sentence.
"Yeah, Ash. Well, Ash, I'd like to introduce you to someone. Ash, this is my boyfriend, Brody."

Beth looked on with a pained expression on her face.
It hurt to see her friend go through that. Finally, she said, "Come on Ash, you said we were going to get ice cream."
As they walked away, Ash said, "Nice save." It was...blunt, but at least they didn't have to stay and watch the "happy couple." All Beth could think about was what happened between her and Becca last school year. Sure, they'd been friends, but they...went their separate directions.

It wasn't Beth's fault, she was sure of it. After all, Becca HAD been the one to end the friendship.

Later, Becca had apologized, it was a little mistake, she said. Beth forgave her, but they were never close friends again.
It was never the same, Beth could never trust her. And it hurts her to see Ash crushed like this.

She felt bad now. She had MADE him talk to her, and it had backfired. She'd rejected him. Getting him past the disappointing would be the easy part. His forgiveness was the hard part.

"Why are you sorry?" Ash cut in. "You were just trying to help. And plus, I may want a girlfriend, but I don't need one."

"So," Beth began, "When's that test again?" She was trying to make things less awkward, but it was failing horribly.
"Oh," Beth said softly. As they sat in silence, Beth reminisced upon the happy memories that she and Ash had shared. Sure, they'd only known each other since 5th grade, but she liked him better than lousy Becca ever could.

"Why did you do that?" Ash asked. She suddenly noticed that his eyes were the color of ice. Cold.

"Why did you do that to me? Get my hopes, only for me to get dissapointed, rejected."
Beth felt anger pulse through her veins. "I only wanted you to be happy!"
"You should have warned me about Becca!"
Oh no. Ash was not pinning this on her. "Do you actually think Becca and I are that close?" She whispered. Whispering was the only way to keep her anger in check.
Beth continued, "Do you REALLY think that I knew that she was dating what's-his-face...Brody? Do you think that I would EVER put you through that, Ash? Look at me...would I ever do that to you?" Ash looked at her, coldly, and answered,
"Yesterday, I would have said 'no,' but today I'm not so sure." Tears began running down Beth's face.
"No, Ash, no I'd NEVER EVER put you through anything like that. Don't you believe me???"

Beth couldn't believe it. How could Ash not believe her?
"How can you not believe me?" Beth asked. This was ridiculous. Ash was being ridiculous.
"It just..you seemed so eager to set me up-"
Beth's body shook, whether with anger or misery, she didn't know. She got up and ran to the door. She couldn't stand being in this place any longer. She wiped tears from her eyes, but they just kept falling. She walked to her car and drove home.
As soon as Beth left, Ash ran out the door.
"Beth! Wait! I didn't mean it! BETH!" But it was too late; she was gone. Inside, he pulled out his cellphone, intending to call her. But the voice message came up, and the realization hit Ash, hard. Her phone was off.

Meanwhile, Ash was scared. Beth wasn't picking up her phone! Was she alright? Had she gotten home. Finally, he couldn't stand it any longer. He picked up his keys and started toward her house.
