From the sad news department again, unfortunately, I belatedly learned earlier tonight that 'Automobile' magazine, which for my money was one of the best magazines of any kind that ever existed, ceased publication just over a year ago. A few months prior to that I had reviewed a book of collected columns by the legendary founder & publisher of 'Automobile', the late David E. Davis Jr., who during the last few decades of his life was frequently referred to as the "Dean of automotive journalism". I know some of you saw it at the time, but if anyone missed it and would like to read it here is a link: (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

So I found this guy on YouTube who has some interesting if brief overviews on various topics. The first one I watched was five Ancient mysteries that still haven't been solved. Nothing earth-shaking or out of this world and since each show is about half an hour-long, doesn't go too much in-depth. This one though I thought would be of interest to the group since it s 10 Misconceptions about The Third Reich's Military. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLSV4...
I just tested it and it worked for moi. You could try going to YouTube and doing a search on the title. I think number two on the list, It goes from ten to one, was on the Polish Cavalry. Sorry, the link didn't work for you.
Hi DJ, apparently it doesn't work on my mobile (in the Goodreads app for android), I just discovered that it does work on my laptop. Thanks for the link, very interesting!
Above the Reich: Deadly Dogfights, Blistering Bombing Raids, and Other War Stories from the Greatest American Air Heroes of World War II, in Their Own WordsFor any interested, this is my next gook out in June
Speaking of youtube, I've been watching a few videos of the Bonneville and Missoula Floods in the Northwest (US) that took place 15,000 years ago. Some fascinating stuff and how it shaped the surrounding terrain from the Scablands, Grand Coulee to Devil's Canyon.

For 2021 U.S. Memorial Day weekend from "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon, first published in September 1914.They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

So I picked up a book that looked amusing since it is something I will most likely never do in this or any other lifetime. But Rick might be intersted. Backpacking in Australia
That's something different Dj, a bit like Bill Bryson's "In a Sunburnt Country". I hope you enjoy travelling across Australia in your reading chair :)
In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson

[book:In..."I am sure that I will enjoy backpacking much better from my chair than actually doing it. LOL.
In your chair you will at least be safe from the snakes, scorpions, spiders, sharks, box jelly fish, crocodiles and all the other things that tend to kill you in Australia 😁
Well except maybe the spiders, outside I only have to worry about ducks and geese. Well, Geese, the ducks run away.
I'm very sad to report that one of the best authors on World War II naval combat has passed away: James Hornfischer died on June 1. I have truly loved all of his books and it terribly saddens me there will be no more. He was barely older than I am.
That’s very sad news Marc! I think I should set up a special theme month so we can all try and read one of his books.
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "That’s very sad news Marc! He was certainly worthy of a special read and I might just read one of his books a second time in order to participate.
Colin wrote: "Walter Boyne died last January 2020."I had to go back into my messages: it was Winston Groom.

So many have passed away recently :(
I will look at setting up a special theme read in the next month of two to celebrate the work of James Hornfischer.
Very sad about James Hornfischer. Several good WWII historians lost in the past year--Carlo D'Este, Winston Groom, Eric Hammel, James Hornfischer.
Happy Independence Day. Recommend Karen A. Chase's Carrying Independence

A truly American holiday. Gather together with friends and family, eat questionable qualities of food (my gatherings usually have tacos, apple pie, and carbonated beverages), then watch explosions. Hopefully that last is under controlled circumstances since Oregon has been really dry this year.

No doubt the products of several fine American breweries will be sampled as well. This afternoon I'll watch baseball -- but around here (South Carolina), no one is a Yankee Doodle Dandy!

Grilled bratwurst and corn on the cob for us here in Colorado. currently 93 degrees Fahrenheit here, so its a warm one! I've been reading Hitler Strikes North by Jack Greene and Alessandro Massignani while waiting for family to come over. Only 46 pages in so far, but am loving it! I'm completely fascinated by Norway right now - I want to go visit the Lofoten Islands!
Theresa wrote: "Grilled bratwurst and corn on the cob for us here in Colorado. currently 93 degrees Fahrenheit here, so its a warm one! I've been reading Hitler Strikes North by Jack Greene and Alessandro Massigna..."Hotter in Colorado than South Carolina.
Theresa wrote: "Virginia and Rhode Island actually declared independence in May 1776. they didn't wait til July."... impatient :-D

I am not familiar with Boston-style baked beans – sounds interesting. In Texas we had ranch style beans, and I like those. Like everything in Texas, they're bigger than regular beans.

I have whipped up a batch or two in the slow cooker and they are amazing.
