MARTHA BOLTON: Always remember "Someday comes"

Do you have a writing project that you’ve had to set aside? No matter how hard you tried to work on it, the words just wouldn’t come. It happens to a lot of writers. For whatever reason you’re simply not “feeling” it that day. So you hit “Save” on work that you know is nowhere near done, and you move on to something else, vowing you will revisit it someday.
Months go by, perhaps even years, and you stumble across that old project. You open up the file and try working on it again. But again, you’re not pleased with anything you write. You wonder what in the world you were thinking when you decided to become a writer. You move this chapter here and that chapter there, and you’re still not happy. You believe the concept has potential, but you also know it’s not working now. So you put it away. Again.
More time passes. Then, one day you wake up and you can’t wait to get to that story. All the pieces have finally come together in your mind. You know exactly how the story needs to go. You open that file and you can’t type the words fast enough. You polish the beginning, sail through the middle, and you actually reach the end. It’s done! Finally. You are satisfied with the end result. Beyond satisfied. You are thrilled! You’re glad you waited because it turned out so much better than it would have turned out had you plodded along forcing it. You send it off to some publishers and you get three offers! Three!
So what happened? It’s the same idea it always was and you’re the same writer. Why was it so easy to finish it this time and so difficult before? What made the difference?
Someday came.

It seems appropriate that Memorial Day would also be the birthday of Bob Hope, a man who gave so much of himself to our military that he was made an honorary veteran by an Act of Congress in 1997. After being presented with the honor by then President Bill Clinton, Bob said, “I’ve been given many awards in my lifetime, but to be numbered among the men and women I admire most is the greatest hon... “So why aren’t more marketing companies targeting our age group? Why are there so many youth-oriented programs and advertisements on television today? Why are we being ignored? Don’t companies realize they are missing a huge market?

Now granted, a visit to the local mall will show you there are a lot of teenagers hanging out there these days. But are they shopping? Are they spending money? No. They’re “hanging.” Contrary to what our skin might be doing, we members of the over-forty crowd don’t “hang.” We shop, and not just window shop either. We’re serious buyers. When we pick up an item and turn it over to see the price, we often carry it right on over to the checkout counter and pay for it. Why? Because we know the energy involved with picking up items. We don’t do it unless we’re committed.”
