It is said that the best Disney Princess of the lot has passed away so unexpectedly. Fond Farewell to Carrie Fisher.
People, it's a tad early but it'll be a busy day so ....Happy New Year to all, with Aussie Rick probably popping the champagne first. It's been a good year with a great group full of great people.
Happy new year to you all and great reading next year. A bottle of 2015 Mesh Eden Valley Riesling for my wife and I.
I have also realised that I will not be finishing Life and Fate until the new year. With the amount of Cricket on TV and to attend to at the famous Gabba this time of year long books tend to be well......long!
Happy New Year to everyone! May you add many excellent books to your TBR list in 2017, and find the time to read them.
Happy New Year to all of you from me as well! I suspect that my wife and I will be toasting the new year this midnight with one of the bottles of 2014 Vino De Eyzaguirre Cabernet which I was lucky enough to obtain several months back. I haven't had any since I drank my last bottle of the '96 about 15 years ago, and the '14 is already fetching around US$105 at various sites online, so hopefully it will be as good as I remember it being in my misspent youth...2016 has been so awful in so many ways, here's hoping that 2017 is much more pleasant for everyone. Insh'Allah...

Better late than never ... from my neck of the woods, a very Happy New Year to all my Goodreads friends and all the very Best for 2017!

How many of you have a longer TBR list than your 'Read' list? If you do, did it happen before or after you join this group?
Chin Joo wrote: "How many of you have a longer TBR list than your 'Read' list? If you do, did it happen before or after you join this group?"Longer TBR, due to this group (and GR friends' reviews)!
Chin Joo wrote: "How many of you have a longer TBR list than your 'Read' list? If you do, did it happen before or after you join this group?"Chin Joo: My TBR is only about 60% of the number of my Read list, but I'm old and have many decades of reading behind me.

My TBR is longer than my read list although that fact that this happened after I joined the group isn't that surprising, since I joined Goodreads and then the group and then started posting books.
My tbr list is longer - mainly because I keep adding books I learn of at this place and I haven't (for the most part) put books on the read list from before I joined GR
My 'Read' list is still longer than my TBR list, but many of those that were read were way before this group. But many recommendations are too good to pass up on and a relentless 'New Release Books' is not helping.Yet many of us come back daily to check things out.
Chin Joo wrote: "How many of you have a longer TBR list than your 'Read' list? If you do, did it happen before or after you join this group?"My 'read' list is longer, but not by much, and the 'want to read' list grows faster than the 'read' list. This group is responsible for a big portion of the tbrs.
My read and tbr lists are about the same size. Being a bit of a nerd, I've just calculated that it will take me 13.4 years to read my tbr list at my current (pathetically slow) rate.

Tony: Interesting idea! If I keep up the reading pace that's been set over the last four years, my TBR (with NO additions -- an unlikely scenario) would take 16.96 years. I may live that long.

My TBR is double my Read, which is a cause of this and other groups plus GR friends, wider book reviews in newspapers and amazon etc. My problem is that even if I started to reduce that today I'm on to a loser as we all know there are more books and more that have yet to be written...doh!
GV's TBR is measured in generations. He has great grandchildren, YTBB, yet to be born, signed up for their summer reading. Chin Joo wrote: "How many of you have a longer TBR list than your 'Read' list? If you do, did it happen before or after you join this group?"Before. Long before. Books are my addiction. Won't even admit the number of volumes in my personal library. If I can't take them to heaven many will be left unread I fear.

Ha ha yes Carl and I recall your calculation about 2 years ago on my TBR and that was lots of years so now I do need all those future GVs to help :)
Thank you Stephen Fry for answering a question that has been bouncing around in the back of mind. In the US we call our first war with the British the Revolutionary War. But Fry pointed out that it was The Independence Wars. This revelation came while I was watching Stephen Fry in America. so far an interesting show, I am on the first of six episodes.
Just thought I would share that for no particular reason.
I saw this on RCP and thought some people here might like the sketcheshttp://www.realclearlife.com/history/...
I really liked this article from the Daily Beast Web siteIt about the last person to be buried at Arlington during Pres Obama's term of office - Viet Nam veteran who had lost an arm and a leg there.

I confess. I am a bibliomaniac.
Spotted this interesting P-47 Thunderbolt comparison picture on Twitter the other day that may be of interest. Better copy in the Photos section of the group.

I read that earlier today. Very interesting item and hard not to relate.
The Guardians books is as good as it gets for anyone that likes books in general.

I want a Library like that one in Prague, that would be just to much fun to spend time in.

That is interesting Charles - she is a beast of a plane.
Good diagram Charles. Certainly shows the size differences. I know there are many stories of the P-47s durability, and have also talked w/bomber pilots saying, the P-47s sure tried hard, but just couldn't keep up with the action.

I knew many P-47 pilots, the best story came from Robert S. Johnson of the 56th FG, and Georg-Peter Eder of JG-26, on their perspectives.
NRO had a photo essay on the recently decommissioned USS Enterprise - it even includes a picture of the CV-6 - the WWII Enterprisehttp://www.nationalreview.com/slidesh...

You threw me for a moment, Happy. To me NRO mean National Reconnaissance Office -- the eye in the sky.
OOPS - I didn't think of that one :)On problem with acronyms - they can mean SOOOOOOO many different things :)
Good news for GoodReads - they're rolling out re-reading! Very beneficial for the annual challenge, that's for sure.More info here:
