Fifty Shades of Grey

dont like it ..dont read it

There was a really good article written a while back about it. But I can't find it. The article stated that people loved the books in part because the metaphors resonated for them. The teen boy is frightening and unknowable for teen girls. Sex can be scary. As can pregnancy.
And how the hatred towards Twilight is in some respects a reflection of a society that is incredibly biased towards one gender. That there is an odd level of sexism in the hate. Particularly when it is not as heavily directed towards other things such as say Star Wars (not good films, I loved the first ones, but I admit they were deeply flawed, fun but flawed) or
various other things. And the view that people believe that how they perceive the story is the only way.
I was a Twilight hater...the books pissed me off, but my relatives and co-workers adored them, I learned I was wrong...it's stupid and wrong to hate a book or to believe your view or perception of it is the only one.
A book can be read and interpreted in many ways. It speaks to people differently. We think differently.
It's like insisting everyone must love brussle sprouts or eat burgers or pork...it's not to everyone's taste.

I completely agree with you! I tried so hard to like it... I fooled myself a little with the first one (the sex scenes kept me going), but I had to force myself through the second. Everything got so repetitive it seriously hurt to read it! I bought all three books at once, thinking/hoping I would love it like so many other people have... I will try to make myself read it but it will have to be months from now. I just cannot stomach anymore of the repetitive arguments, sex scenes and everything else.

see thats exactly how i am i read the firs 2 in a row...havnt read the 3rd...ill make myself adventually but its gonna be a while from now i need to fill my brain with something else for awhile

I totally agree with you! I love Matt Bomer. I don't care if he's gay or straight. He's got the bedroom eyes that are needed for the role. (Oh, that lucky guy he's with). He was my first choice. Watch his trailer. He melts your heart. Ian was my second choice, but Matt is my first. Yum! LOL! A little reminder, an actor is an actor and is entitled to play whatever he's able to.

yea i thought so too i mean look at neil patrick harris (and this was my argument on that thread) he is gay...and in how i met your mother hes a manwhore and i think his character he portrays is hillarious

yea I think Matt fits the role the best but i love Ian lol Ians my first choice cuz i love him lol but i think Matt would be best even if he is Gay and ia agree he's got one lucky man ohhh and in magic mike he played a straight guy who was married OH NOOOO a gay guy playing a straight man noooo lol (sarcasm)

well i agree with u it shouldnt be a factor in it i mean i can see where some things are like the whole lohan thing she wasnt showing up to set and they had deadlines now i would take that in consideration or even kristen stewart having an affair (thats bad rep for a move) and thats their work histroy but something like being gay no it shouldnt have anything to do with if u get a part or not

He stared in movies with Doris Day in many movies. Also with Jane Wyman in the Magnificent Obsession, a real tear jerker. Elizabeth Taylor in GIANT and many, many more. He was a heart throb in his day. Unfortunately he died of AIDS. It was very sad. I think he was infected by his partner of many years.

Totally agree Jenna.

I agree as well!

I read Bared to You, and I really didn't like it at all. Although maybe you can't go by me bc it has rave reviews and a lot of people seem to have loved it.
I just never felt a connection with the characters. Yes, the writing was better than FSoG and when I first started reading it, I thought I was going to love it. But as the book went on, I felt like it was going nowhere. The hero and heroine each had crazy issues (which was fine), but they were never even remotely resolved. Every problem that occurred between them was fixed with nothing but sex- and suddenly everything was better? Idk, it just never felt real, for me.

Actually, I recall that there was quite a bit of controversy with The Davinci Code. It offended many religious people. I really enjoyed it by the way, I thought it was a very entertaining read. :D

I did find Ana's constant jealousy of her annoying, but I hated her character. I liked Bared to You but I thought the Fifty Shades series was better. I'll put it like this...Bared To You was better written, but Fifty Shades had the better story. I also think that the two main characters in Bared to You, Gideon and Eva, have much more severe psychological problems than Christian and Ana. Gideon and Eva's relationship was extremely dysfuctional and codependent, imo. I am going to read the next novel in the series to see what is going to happen next with Gideon and Eva but I don't think I was as invested in seeing them get to the "happily ever after" as I was while reading Fifty Shades of Grey.

I didn't like Gideon at all. I liked Christian so much more. Gideon's character seemed really flat...even with all the good writing, he never came to life. IMO
Jenna- watch you love this one lol ;)

I didn't know that he was gay. That doesn't matter to me at all. He's very handsome, but I don't think he's right for the role because he's not as tall and big as I imagine Christian to be. Christian works out and is supposed to be on the tall and muscular side. Matt Bomer seems on the little side. Sort of like Rob Lowe or Tome Cruise. You can beefcake them up all you want, they still come across as short, little guys on screen.

lmao ur right kris watch me love it since i didnt like 50 haha

and see ur giving a vaild reason to why u dont think he is good for the role. thats your opinon and atleast theres a reason to it ya know instead of just because he's gay

Besides, it's not the sex I have a problem with. It's just poorly written. The grammar and ridiculously repetitive vocabulary are why it bothered me. Endless repetition = boring.

Exactly, the comment that actors who are gay can't play heterosexuals is insanely ignorant and homophobic. Because that sort of ignores Montgomery Cliff, Barbara Stanwyck, Rock Hudson, Richard Chamberlin, James Dean (bi-sexual), amongst many many others.

yea it just shows how stupid and close minded some ppl really are

I remember them well and they were wonderful actors. I wish people would realize these individuals are born this way just like the rest of us. We are ALL GOD's creation and should be respected.

I agree with you Kris, I didn't care as much for Bared to You. I thought it was intriguing, but the plot line with just a little too similar to FSoG. I just didn't connect to the characters as much. I also felt that the writing was a bit lacking. There were some parts I did like though.. like the edition of her bisexual roommate. For that part alone, I'm intrigued to read the next book. What do you think?

yes thats what got us on the topic was matt bomber someone posted something that made me mad and since we all talk civil about things i brought it over to this thread to see what u guys thought about it

I don't care if he's gay either. He is soooo hot and melts your heart. It's all fantasy, ladies. That's what books are about.

honestly, when i heard and read about this book, i don't want to read it, because i do not know if the theme will fit my taste for a book but i bought the book and hey I like it - actually, what I learned from psychology course made me realize that there's something wrong from Christian's past that causing him to behave like what he is in the book.
So yeah, my advise is read BETWEEN AND BEYOND the lines.
I'm not a fan of her writing style, though.

see someone else saying he shouldnt play CG cuz he's gay...ppl are so stupid but yea i think he's perfect

Karen- I totally LOVED her roommate! Best part of the book, for me. I'm not sure if I'll read the sequel yet... Most likely not, but I'll see what you think of it since we both felt similar about the first.

Yep... there he is!!! Swoooonn!!

Kris... that roommate... oh my...., I'll read the sequel just to see where he figures in. I'm hoping some heat comes out of that relationship!!!! I'll definitely keep you informed. I don't think it will be released until Oct. though.

Thanks Karen!... Let me know how it pans out :)

Totally ridiculous!! I'd do him, gay or not!!! LOL (if my husband didn't mind)

I'm admittedly bewildered by the question. First of all, it's not like this is the first book that's taken off like wildfire.
Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" was very popular several years ago. I remember having it thrust at me.
Read it quickly. Thought it was predictable, poorly written crap, it got a movie and people swore by it.
But no one questioned it's popularity.
The Avenger's - a superhero flick that broke all records in its first weekend out - made over 400 million worlwide, and 300 domestic, is well on it's way to the 600 million. It's a piece of fluff.
A Twinkie. There's nothing there. And it's been done before. Oh, don't get me wrong - I loved it. Lots of fun. Then promptly forgot it. But people adore it.
And many people have written reviews comparing it to, get this - an opera and a Broadway musical. And again, no one questioned its popularity.
Harry Potter took off like wildfire, as have the Hunger Games - two series I adored, got obsessed with, then forgot...and again few people questioned.
Twilight takes off like wildfire - people question and mock, but not that much.
50 Shades takes off - and well...it's mocked and bashed and made fun of, as are the readers. A guilty secret.
Interesting pattern.
While I admit 50 Shades is not necessarily a well-written book (I see it as akin to eating a box of chocolats on a gloomy day), and fluffy, it's no better or worse than Jackie Suzanne's Valley of the Dolls or Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code or The Avengers. Less violent perhaps.
Is it the fact that it started out as an Everybody's Human, AU, fanfic? If so, what would have happened if no one knew? The only similarity the book bears to Twilight according to the article above is Christian is a secretive millionaire, with a secret past-time that only a few people including the heroine know about. And the heroine is a niave girl. Oh and he has red puffy hair and is good looking, she has raven hair, they live in Seattle, she writes in a diary.
Do you have any idea how many novels out there have that set up? It's not original. That's not even copyrightable. Controlling guy with a secret is typical of 95% of gothic romance novels - heck it's the plot of Rebecca.
What made 50 Shades different from most of these novels is the guy was the one who was abused, sexually molested and couldn't stand to be touched, not the gal. Usually it's the opposite.
And the wit. The writer makes fun of things.
Is it the fanfic angle? Well...here's a list of published fanfic (all the Pride and Prejudice stuff, Pride and Prejudice with Zombies, The Wide Sargasso Sea (Jane Eyre), Mr. March (Little Women), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (Hamlet), A Thousand Acres (King Lear), Death Comes to Pemberly (Pride and Prejudice again), Bridget Jones Diary (Pride and Prejudice again)....
You will never be able to understand why something is popular. As a marketing prof once told me, if people could figure out why something is popular or why people love something - and could bottle that - they'd make millions, billions. But you can't. It's not possible.
