i allready love you

I find it romantic (yeah i am blonde so maybe not so smart) with a wicked sense of romance. Yeah i laugh a lot, it keep me good company for some hours (only some hours cause i am a fast reader) and "show must go on".
I amn't going to marry Christian Gray, so i will move to another book and then to another to keep my company, to make me think, to entertain me, to comfort me, to teach me, to travel me.
I don't find a reason for argument.

OK Maybe, I can answer this. I heard the author on Good Morning America talking about this book while I was getting my kids ready for school. I didn't hear it being referred to as erotica and I have never read erotica before either just because I thought it was cheesy. I didn't know but I just assumed. So at the end I hear the reporter say this is the sisterhood book of the generation and that women will be talking about this for a very long time. So I bought it on my Nook that day. I never read any excerpts or anyone I actually knew reading it. So then I started reading it like a month ago and it sat on my Nook for a couple months. Well I was on a plane when I started it and I was so shocked and embarrassed I almost stopped reading it cause the person next to me obviously could see the words on my Nook lol So I kept at it and I started asking my friends about it and they read it and then I realized it was considered erotica. I kept reading because I fell in love with the story but the writing does suck. I am always reading whatever people are talking about to join or start a conversation and I knew this would be soon. Now look at us! So I say read it. I have read awful books but I still finish them I have OCD when it comes to finishing things I start.
Maybe this is why other people read it to begin with too. Not knowing the genre. Had I known I would not have bought it and I am so glad I did. :)

The Fifty Shades Books are NOT poorly written. I think that the people that throw that out there as their blanket statement, really know nothing about good writing. Good writing captivates the reader, drawing them into a new experience. It does NOT taint a reader's morality to read about a fictional character's experiences. These are stories of fiction... not reality. The beauty of a good book allows a reader to experience something they would not be privy to in their own life. It kills me how people still to this day and age, endorse the old "BOOK BURNING" mentality, when they read something that embarrasses them. When really, it's this embarrassment that sets them apart. What are they hiding, why so defensive?

I still don't understand what all the fuss is about!
The 1st book sucked lemons!
Although I have to admit that the other 2 weren't that bad.
I found the sexual parts quite dull...I mean, there's only so many ways to descibe having sex, and when they did it about 10 times in each chapter, I just thought it was unnecessarily repetitive.
I believe that people who 'LOVE' this book have not read many books.....as they would know the difference between a good & terrible writer.
I also find that single mothers prefer it. lol
'Mummy porn' as they call it....I don't think so! pmsl
This is not a terrible series.....but it's definitely NOT great either!
At the end of the day, it all boils down to preference, right?

People who thought the writing in these books were good, are seriously making laugh out loud! The STORY I like. The sex in every chapter was pretty much the same. Alot of the fiction in the book is supposed to be believable and I will tell you...Who as a virgin would agree to such a contract?? LMAO!
Seriously everything you have said I was thinking. So, Thank you~

I have to agree....just like the people who hate Twilight. Why let something obsess you just because you don't like it...there are plenty of books you will like so go read something else and let people enjoy what they want to!

This writer... EL James, is a FIRST time author. She had an inspiration and wrote a book!!!! She knew NO ONE!!! It was her fan base that got her noticed. And I must say, condemned her to endless criticism.

A person who writes and is published is an "author." Whether they are a good or bad author is entirely subjective. The book actually TALKS a lot about engaging in BDSM, but most of the sex scenes are "vanilla" ones. I have read much better sex scenes and much better romance stories. However that is MY opinion and my opinion like everyone else's is entirely subjective.

There are much better books out there and much better authors IMO. I think the success of these books is mostly attributable to timing and luck. She published at a time when the publishing world is in flux and when e-book sales are out-pacing paper sales. One can "hide" the cover of the book(s) they are reading when using an e-reader and that takes away the embarrassment factor. I would venture a guess that most of the sales of these books was based on curiosity and the fact that people could assuage their curiosity without judgment from other people. Some suggestions for "better" erotica authors (again my opinion) are Sarah McCarty and Emma Holly. I have tried some other authors, but they seem to sacrifice the story in favor of numerous sex scenes. The above mentioned authors actually know how to write a story.

That might be true for some people but not everyone who has read the books. That’s a pretty big generalization. I read constantly, all different genres of books and I love FSoG. And so do a lot of other people. Yes FSoG might have brought new people to reading because of the hype. I think that's great. A good book to me is one that is exciting, fun, thought provoking, entertaining, and takes me away from reality for awhile. I would never describe the sexual escapades in FSoG dull; I thought they were quite exciting.

I do not shy away from erotica, but the sex in these books became boring very quickly and could not sustain my interest.
The overuse of some words and terms drove me crazy. If I never hear/read the terms "Inner Goddess", "Mercurial Man", "Oh My" (plus a good many others) ever again it will be too soon!
Moreover, I was dumbfounded by the development of the character's relationship - or lack thereof. Was this meant to be a romance? And, What are Christian's appealing characteristics anyway? OK so he's good looking and he's good in Bed, OK? ---- and????
I'm sorry ladies, I didn't get it, perhaps someone can explain it to me.

the truth is that when i started this page i didnt have a lot of hope that i would read good comment but i was rong.i read that the author of the book its not profetional author and that the bad comments for the book made it more popular .sow what can we do to stop this madness because someone makes a lot of money out of this and some ather athours dont.if even the bad publicity do why have the power to tern it in someather book?i have an idea but i will need help

That might be true for some people but ..."
I get that everyone has their own opinion and they are entitled to it.
You like the book? Good for you. Maybe we could have a mature friendly discussion on our different points of view. You don't like the book, great, neither do I, so let's discuss our mutual opinion.
I don't think anyone has the right to not ask people to speak their opinion and seek out like-minded people so they know they're not alone.
I will say though, as someone who has had a wide variety of sexual experiences (including BDSM) the scenes in this book are, in my opinion, embarrassingly juvenile and incredibly dull and repetitive. But I get that a lot of people out there are into "vanilla" so something a little bit different to old standard missionary would be pretty "racy" to them.

Ok if that's so, after how many books a person must read to have an opinion to share with the goodread's members? Is there a minimum limit of books you have to read ? Or a specific genre ? Maybe specific books then?
Ok people, democracy...
If you like the book its fine. You can love it for your personal reasons.
If you don't like the books its fine. You can hate ti for your personal reasons.
Why or why not like the book is a personal opinion establish from feelings, experience, thoughts, culture, mental condition (while you are reading the book).
If i hate or love a book doesn't mean that i am "that" person, i don't put a sign on me cause i hate/love it.
We are not living in the medieval, its free to have an opinion to agree/disagree with others. BUT it's not message of wisdom to categorized members by their opinion.
And again... It's Only A Book...
(p.s. move to another book either hate or love it)

The book was hyped up big style in the press after (and don't quote me) Katie Price reviewed it. The people who recommended the book to me (over and over again) are not people who normally read books so the fact they had read a series which in turn had opened their minds to the possibilities of reading more (and some have) for me was a good thing. I gave in and read the series.
I am not a prude, I am extremely liberal minded and I do enjoy erotica but this just didn't fit well with me, a comment I heard from many friends is that the book is seen as a way for a guy trying to explain his need to be physically abusive to women by disguising it as BDSM.
I did complete the series out of mild curiosity and even though it didn't 'float my boat' it should be credited for bringing people back to a wonderful pastime that is reading, Harry Potter was credited for encouraging children to enjoy reading and later there was the Twilight Series and the Southern Vampires that did the same for teens and young adults.
Just because I don't like it doesn't make it a bad book, it is what makes us all different and interesting. I look forward instead to seeing new people on goodreads that have found their way here and their love of reading through books like this, books that turn into crazes tend to have that effect, they open the door to the wonderful world of literature and bring people in who then discover the classics and other genres. For that it should be commended.

I do not shy away fro..."
Very well said!!!
I totally agree with you word for word.
;-)

Ok if that's so, after how many books a per..."
I just think that a certain type of person likes these books.....as I find that the women who 'LOVE' them are usually single mothers, who have read about 5 books in their lifetime!
I agree with you that it's 'only a book'.....this is the message I try to tell people.
Example: KAREN is taking this dicussion to heart, I don't understand why.....people have their opinions, it won't change her mind about how she feels about them, so why get all defensive? pmsl
I was just telling people what I think about it. You don't like what I have to say, that's fine.....like you said, it's only a book.....DON'T take it to heart!

I've even seen authors try the apporach "I'm not good with grammar and spelling so don't judge" in their summaries. Lolwhat, of course you don't have to wonder if you get "get yourself a beta reader before you publish stuff online" as a comment. (Yes, this also has everything to do with "don't like don't read" since it would mean "if you like correct grammar and spelling stay away from this story")
The thing about Fifty Shades is: usually books get edited. This one was obviously only edited so far as to take out 'Bella' and 'Edward' and insert 'Ana' and 'Christian'. It pretty much reads like a fanfiction. And I read a lot of unpublished original fiction and fanfiction to know how that stuff sounds like, especially if it only goes on about one pairing that does boring stuff and has sex all the time. It just goes on forever and ever and ever and has no real plot. Even romance novels can come up with a better plot. Heck, I've even read smut fanfictions that had a better plot to start with. Fifty Shades on the other hand? Urgh. Reads like the author's fantasy of an almost ideal relationship. /: That's like reading a fanfiction with a Mary Sue in it. (Those things also go on forever and ever and ever.)
If you speak German, google 'blackbolt' until you get to a site called 'Blackbolt's dungeon'. This author has the same type of stories that Shades of Grey is: repetitive pairing stuff that goes on forever and ever about the same damn thing.
Well, if you like that kind of stuff: good for you! There's much more of this out there, believe me!
There are many other issues I have with these books but meh, a lot of other people talked about this stuff already.

"Don't like it, don't read it"?? How do we know we don't like it until we read it?
I am one of these readers. I disliked it vehemently. This has nothing to do with the content and everything to do with the writing style, lack of plot, and dislikeable characters. BUT I couldn't have known I didn't like it until I picked it up and read it! There's nothing worse than a person who criticises a book they haven't read. A pet peeve of mine.

for me and thats all. What I didnt like were all that hysteria about how bad this book was and thats my promblem because they are not make good reviews but they are swearing for 3 and 4 pages.in greece we have a saying for this that it goes like this ΤΡΑΒΑΤΕ ΜΕ ΚΙΑΣ ΚΛΑΙΩ BUT I CAN NOT Translate ΙΤ.THAN FOR PATIENCE ΤΟ ΜΥ ΕNGLISH

What?? The writing is great? Constantly repetitive phrases and words, no variety in vocabulary, poor use of grammar and construction is considered well-written? I'm sad to think that this is where the literary world is headed - garbage writing skills are enough to publish a book. I have no problem with the sex in this book or the frequency of sex in their book. I have a problem with the horrendous writing skills. This is not a "blanket comment" - it's a pretty solid fact that can be backed up with the repetitiveness, poor grammatical construction, and poor dialog (a college graduate of literature that speaks like a teenager). Yikes.

You're assuming (incorrectly) that people dislike it based solely on the fact that it's erotica.
Wrong. I like erotica. I disliked Fifty Shades of Grey because it's poorly written tripe. And how is anyone supposed to know whether or not they'll like a book unless they read it first?
Good grief.

This made me laugh so hard.

How very fair of you, Aliki. After all, I'm sure you've never disparaged anything you didn't like. Right? If you dislike something, you just keep it to yourself, I assume. How very enlightened of you. Now, here's where I'm going to explain something; Goodreads is a community of readers sharing their opinions about books. What in the hell good would it do anyone if the only reviews ever written were from people who liked the books? When someone seeks out book reviews, they're doing so for the purpose of seeing all sides of a situation, either to determine whether or not they want to try a book out, or to find other like-minded individuals with whom to commiserate. Who are you to tell people they shouldn't share their opinion if it's a negative one?

*Applauding*

Whether or not a book is good is subjective. Whether or not a review is good is subjective.
Really, Aliki, are you trying to kill me with hypocrisy and illogical rambling? Because you're succeeding.

lol.
