That is my thinking too. I am not trying so hard to think I will actually read them all, but the list is always in the back of my mind when choosing books. I usually have at least one or two from the list that I am reading at any given time. I need to update my personal list, but I think I'm up to around 50 or so lists books at the moment.

message 1252: by Dree (new)

Dree | 160 comments I finished up #126 last night. I have read 19 books from the complete list so far this year. Most under 300 pages, but also The Brothers Karamazov and Pilgrim's Progress. I count those 2 as my big accomplishments of the 19.

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments 20 today!

message 1254: by Dawnstream (new)

Dawnstream I have read 29! Whoo-hoo? I just found the list a few weeks ago. I'm disappointed that it has virtually none of the books that I've read and enjoyed, but I'm hopeful that I'll find some new favorites.

message 1255: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments I have just joined this group this week. Counting all of the books I have ever read, I finished 39 from the combined list. Still a lot to read, but from now on the list will always give me inspiration on what to read. I hope to reach 50 this year.

Nice, welcome! :)

Which one is your first to read?

message 1257: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments Thanks! I just bought The Turn of the Screw yesterday and saw that coincidentally it is the monthly read as well, so I will start with that one today! Just finished The Outsider this week.

message 1258: by Winter (new)

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Was the Outsider good?

It is:) I didn't quite know what to think of his way of writing. It's short though, so it's a fast read anyway.

Ed Lehman | 122 comments just updated my list and I'm at 134.

message 1260: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (mentha) | 18 comments Okay, okay, okay. But how does everyone deal with keeping track of all that? I tried to make a shelf of my own since the official list will only count my "read" status of the first 100 books and I thought that maybe I could check off on it but its not working out so well. So how does everyone keep track?

message 1261: by Dee (new)

Dee (deinonychus) | 243 comments I have a separate shelf for list books, which I use to see which books I have that I have read or are on my to-read list. You can use the multiple shelf feature to see which books are on two shelves (e.g. 1001-list and read)

message 1262: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments I add all books I've read from the list to a seperate shelf. And I've got the entire list in an Excel-file where I keep track on the books I've read and which books of the list I own.

message 1263: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 227 comments I have three Word documents where I mark books in different colours, e.g. green for read. One is the original list from 2006, one for the 2008 list, and one for the combined list 2006-2012.

message 1264: by Linda (new)

Linda | 275 comments I use an Excel file - all books are listed with separate columns to indicate which lists each book was included in.

message 1265: by J_BlueFlower (last edited Aug 12, 2015 12:11PM) (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 387 comments I too have a separate shelf for list books. It is called 1001-read.

message 1266: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (mentha) | 18 comments I think I'll make one shelf for the 'not read' part of the list and one for the 'read' part of the list and just move my books fron one to the other untill the 'to read' list is empty :)

message 1267: by Mekki (new)

Mekki | 171 comments I'm at 90 books.

I also just dump all list into one book shelf, 1001-book. Unread 1001 books are additionally added to a 1001 books to read. When i read a book i add it to a 1001-read shelf and remove it from 1001 books to read also.

BTW you can import/export books via Excel for backup or to share.

message 1268: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (mentha) | 18 comments Everytime I add something to a shelf that is not exclusive it automatically adds it to my 'read' shelf too. Its a pain T.T

message 1269: by Amy the book-bat (last edited Aug 14, 2015 02:09PM) (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 35 comments If I counted right, I have 40 read and completed. I was surprised that Beowulf and Shakespeare are not included on the list. I'm guessing that it is because one is in verse and the other is mostly plays and sonnets, BUT they are still BOOKS. So who knows... if they were part of the list, I would have a lot more completed.

message 1270: by Eadie (new)

Eadie Burke (eadieburke) I'm on my 132nd book.

message 1271: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm only up to 33.

message 1272: by Eadie (new)

Eadie Burke (eadieburke) I just started 2666 by Roberto Bolano. It's 898 pages. Recently finished A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. It was really good. I think it was over 1,000 pages. I belong to a group that reads a long book from the list every quarter. We also read Nicholas Nickelby in the first quarter. I love the list books. Once in a while you come across one like Crash and you have to wonder why it's on the list.

message 1273: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've read 132, if I counted correctly.

It did wonders for me.

Also this group has some great discussion and good resource links: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Ulysses is one of the hardest books on the list. The hardest I've yet encountered.

I've got this one at home in my bookcase, but still haven't dared to start with it..

message 1278: by Diana (new)

Diana Little | 30 comments I joined Goodreads and this group just over a year ago now, and when i first found out about the 1001 list, I only had 14 books down despite being an avid reader. This was kind of disappointing, but thanks to this group encouraging my book addiction, I have become obsessed with finding copies of list books where ever I go. I went from 14 to 38 and i have about another 30 list books sitting on my shelf (in addition to the numerous non-list books i keep stockpiling as well). My husband has just started to look at me and shake his head when he see's me come home with another bag full of books. Thankfully he supports my bibliophile ways and has promised to build me a book shelf; probably out of necessity because we're running out of space... lol

message 1279: by Winter (new)

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Lol. You need a kindle ^^ I read the free ones on kindle, the other I compare price and read the where they are cheapest ^^

message 1280: by Diana (new)

Diana Little | 30 comments lol yeah I have a kobo, but I generally only gets books I really don't care if I have a hard copy of. I have scored out all the second hand stores that sells books cheap and surprisingly I have found a lot of list books there as long as you're willing to put the time in to the scavenge hunt. which I will be honest is all part and parcel to this book addiction!

Me too :) I found a list-book really cheap last week, felt amazing ^^ But I'm happy to not have to pay for all the free domain ones too. And my shoulder can't handle paperbooks all the time, so I must read mainly on kindle :)

Rowizyx | 38 comments 96... Wow, it's a long long way! I'm reading other four books from the list and there are about ten more waiting for me on my physical shelves, but I still have to read a lot! XD

I checked better my list... Actually I'm at 116:

Before I joined the challenge (1999-march 2013): 45
2013: 9
2014: 26
2015: 36

message 1283: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments Haha Diana, that sounds so familiar! My husband sighs when I get back from the second hand store with another pile of books and our bookcases are (more than) full. We've got a great second hand store nearby, with lots of books really cheap. Everybody sells their books because people mostly switch to an e-reader, great for me :) I have a list on my phone with all the 1001-reads I still haven't got, so I can look up when I'm at a store which books are on the list. It is starting to be an addiction.

Thank you for this. I'm forcing myself to read it ,like I'm eating my spinach. My goal was to have it done by the time I had to go back to school for my job as an educational interpreter. I have two weeks left so I'll keep plugging away.
483 is a big number, but my hobbies are this and running. I've been working on this list since 2009.

Hi, I'm new to the 1001Books group. I have the 2006 edition book and have now read 166 of those. The most recent this month: Rabbit is Rich and a re-read of Heart of Darkness. I've just learned of at least 3 that I've read that were dropped from the 2012 edition, but another one that I've read added. So maybe 164? When I got the book I had read 90 some; that was 6 years ago. So at about 10 /year, I've got about 84 more years before I can die...hah!

There are spreadsheets freely available on the internet which have all of the lists (I downloaded one a month or so ago) if you want to see what you have read.

The later versions of the list are much better than the earlier which are dominated to an appalling degree by a few authors whose entire bibliography is included.

Then follow the link. I copied it down into a spreadsheet because I found that more convenient than a website.

Shaun Heenan | 2 comments I'm just starting, and I'd read exactly 20 of them before officially attempting the list. I'm approaching the end of Infinite Jest for #21, which feels like it should count for about five.

Getting there! Read 75 books in total in 2015 so need more discipline selecting from my shelf to get to 1001 before I die. Just too many good books out there.

message 1297: by Dree (new)

Dree | 160 comments I managed to read 30 1001 books this year (I was going to try for 10). I have made it to 140.

Aiming for 20 next year, but hoping to far surpass it. I am starting the new year with A Suitable Boy, so I am going big LOL.

message 1298: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments I have read 59 books from the list, 27 last year. For this year I want to read at least 30 books from the list, if all goes really well I hope to reach 100 this year (but I don't think I will have enough time to read 41 list books)

Dre e and Robin have me beat; I read 22 List books in 2015 & I re-read Heart of Darkness (1st time was 40 yrs ago), so I could say 23. I also read 16 non-list books. I've always read classic lit books, so when I was given a 2012 edition of "1001 Books.." by my daughter, I had read about 90 of them. Now I'm at 167. Today, New Year's Day, I'm reading "The Name of the Rose" and maybe some of Ellison's "Invisible Man". My previous high was 13 List books in a year- I will try for at least 25 List books this year.
