You could add protestors or fighting for justice to this theme as well.

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Photojim wrote: "We all know the March Hare was mad. Perhaps a book with mental illness or perhaps just heavy drug use or maybe even tea parties.

People march off to war. Something with marching - armies or that..."

And the name of March comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war. Which goes with Jim's suggestion of marching off to war.

I agree with the other suggestions: St. Patrick's Day. A book set in Ireland or with character of Irish descent.

Spring Equinox: A book set during the Spring or with Spring in its title.

March's birthstones are aquamarine and bloodstone.

These stones mean courage.

Its birth flower is the Daffodil.

So in conclusion: Spring, War and Ireland. Or a combination of the three.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 1058 comments Isn't there a book about Leprachauns fighting over the rights to an ancient magical spring? Oh. Wait. That was an episode of Charmed. LOL, couldn't resist.

Don't know if any of these have been listed already, but here are a few I found:
March 1 National Peanut Butter Lover's Day I'm not going there. :P
March 10 Middle Name Pride Day Read a book where the author's middle name appears on the cover.
March 11 Johnny Appleseed Day
March 12 Plant a Flower Day Florist/farmer character, garden/farm setting
March 13 Jewel Day Jewel-toned cover, gems/jewelry on cover
March 14 Learn About Butterflies Day Book about life changes (metamorphosis)
March 15 Incredible Kids Day Character with children
March 22 National Goof Off Day I don't feel like thinking about this, so I got nothing.

Fran | 12278 comments Just wondering if we could add back the option to use the author's first or last name as well as the book title for #1. I really liked having the choice in the past and thought I would throw the idea in there for March.

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Now Open for suggestions for April categories!

message 857: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Wikipedia: April is the fourth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, and one of four months with a length of 30 days. April was originally the second month of the Roman calendar, before January and February were added by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC. The month was named after a goddess Eostre whose feast was in that month. St George's day is the twenty-third of the month; and St Mark's Eve, with its superstition that the ghosts of those who are doomed to die within the year will be seen to pass into the church, falls on the twenty-fourth. In China the symbolic ploughing of the earth by the emperor and princes of the blood takes place in their third month, which frequently corresponds to our April. The birthstone of April is the diamond, and the birth flower is typically listed as either the Daisy or the Sweet Pea.

Shannon (wckdktty) | 479 comments Remember Spring Showers bring April Flowers, so books with Flowers in the title

Books to do with Easter: Bunnies, Rabbit, Candy, Chocolate, Eggs, Chicks, ducks, chickens in title

Taxes due: Read a free book, whether borrowed or gotten free from online or library

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments We already mentioned it last month - The Royal Wedding - read a book with either a wedding or a character that is royalty.

message 860: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL! Love the taxes 'free book' option!

message 861: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Easter could go either the Christian way or the Pagan Way. Christian: resurrection of Christ, Good Friday, Lent. Or you could go with the fertility symbols of Pagan religion, the rabbit and the egg.

message 862: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Did someone already say April Fool's Day? (A book about a joke or a prank.)

April 2nd Hans Christian Anderson's Birthday. (Maybe a re-telling of a Hans Christian Anderson story. Or a book set in Denmark?)

April 3rd Find-A-Rainbow Day. (This reminds me of the Fever series because JZB calls Mac, Rainbow Girl.)

April 8th Ponce de Leon Day. Born in 1460. He discovered Florida and searched for the Fountain of Youth. (Don't know if there are any books about the fountain of youth. Maybe a book with 'fountain' or 'youth' in the title?)

April 11th Jackie Robinson Day. On this day in 1947, Jackie Robinson became the 1st african-american in modern major-league baseball. (This could either be a book with an african american protagonist or a book about baseball).

April 22nd Earth Day (A book with an environmentalist protagonist or set in the wild)

April 23rd William Shakespeare's Birthday (A Romeo and Juliet type book about star-crossed lovers. A Midsummer's Night's Dream: a book about fairies.)

April 27th Administrative Professional's Day (A book with an administrative professional protagonist. Or a book with an office setting).

Mojca | 1414 comments New challenge suggestion:
What about a twist on the read-your-name challenge?
We could do a bimestrial (if a monthly is too tough) Read the Author’s Name Challenge — read a book which title or author’s first name, middle or last name start with a certain letter. And read a book by the spelled author as a bonus.

As for choosing the author: at random (we so like the random generators ^_^), have a poll, or let the moderator choose for us.

message 864: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments for any month, we could read a book that has an author or a character with the name the same as your own - so, I would read a book about a Debbie, Deborah, Debra or Deb.

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Debbie wrote: "for any month, we could read a book that has an author or a character with the name the same as your own - so, I would read a book about a Debbie, Deborah, Debra or Deb."

That would be interesting. There is that author Kami Garcia.

message 866: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) | 510 comments April 10th- Encourage a Young Writer Day. Read a book by an author who is new, or is especially young.
April 18th- Pet Owner's Day. Character is a pet owner.
April 20th- Look-Alike Day. Read a book with a mystical element, like shape-shifting or doppleganger.

For the Rainbow Day, I think we could read a book with a super-happy ending.

message 867: by Abha (new)

Abha (abhalovesbooks) Birthstone for April is a diamond. So maybe something involving a diamond?

message 868: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Courtney wrote: "For the Rainbow Day, I think we could read a book with a super-happy ending. "

Actually that would be a good choice for a LGBT romance or a book with a gay character - the rainbow flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride.

message 869: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (wckdktty) | 479 comments Rainbow could also be one on the cover. I dont know of many but I am sure they are out there. Maybe even have Prism or somthing in the title

That's a good idea. To expand on the rainbow idea. Maybe a challenge with titles that correspond to the colors in a rainbow. Like a book with the word red, orange, yellow etc. in the title. Or maybe this could be its own challenge and it could be an alphabet challenge. Roy G Biv. A book whose title begins with the letter 'R', then 'O' etc.

message 876: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1245 comments I'm feeling guilty about the challenge books that I didn't read so far this year so...my suggestion for a future challenge or just a category in a challenge is Ghost(s) of Challenges Past. The point would be to go back and read the books not read yet that had been on your challenge lists in the past. For those who always complete their challenges...it could be that they pick their favorite categories from past challenges to come up with the new challenge. Just a thought...

message 877: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments I like that one Melissa, there is always about 3 books that I want to read for each category but I can barley finishe the 10 per month.

message 878: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Me too! I have (so far - touch wood) finished each challenge - but I always have other books I want to squish in...

message 879: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I like that idea as well...I finish all my challenges but in the case of the Pick it 4 Me, I never read all the choices...I'd like to back and read some of those choices!

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Just saw the TV ad last night - it is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras this coming weekend (being telecast around the Ausralia)... (refer rainbow conversation - as a late nod??)

message 881: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments I have a new idea that has been nagging me since I first read about the couch potato quarterly challenge. Instead of using T.V. shows as guide to pick out our books what about using the names of rock bands. I made an example list of 15 bands to show what I mean.

Queen - A book about a Queen or princess as the main character

Stone Temple Pilots - A book with an archeological setting, involves a temple, or has a main character that is a pilot

Alice in Chains - A main character or author is named Alice, or a bondage/ s&m story.

Kings of Leon - A story with a King and his court

Black Eyed Peas - A story that has a chef as the main character or takes place in Louisiana

Disturbed - A character that is crazy, a thriller, or takes place in an insane asylum

Green Day - Has the word Green in the title or has a green cover

Incubus - A book with an incubus, a story involving nightmares, or obsession.

Jane’s Addiction - A main character or author is named Jane, or a character with some sort of addiction.

Muse - a book that involves some sort of connection to Greek mythology or a character that inspires someone to be a better person.

Paramore - A historical story involving a paramour or a contemporary story involving an adulterous affair

Rage Against the Machine - A book with a political setting or mystery

Sublime - a Beautiful cover or a synopsis that sounds awe-inspiring

The White Stripes - A predominately white cover, cover with white lettering, or character that is an ex-convict

Chicago - Setting is in Illinois

message 882: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I like that idea Lacy ... and with a bonus theme of the readers own choice (eg I might pick Crowded House, The Cat Empire or The Getaway Plan to Australianise my selection)

message 883: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Thank you. I think the bonus theme is a good idea, to! I like it. I like Crowded House as well. I haven't heard them in years. My cassette tape didn't make it through the technology transition!

message 884: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Well, they disbanded and the original drummer, Paul Hester, died a few years ago. I think they may have reformed at one point, but not sure what their current status is... But I loved their songs back 15-20 yrs ago... OMG - that long ago??

message 885: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Jane, I think they are back together. They released a new album last year, I seem to remember them on the new Hey Hey. I didn't like the new one though, bring on the oldies. Yay!

message 886: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Yes - I vaguely remember something along those lines, Sandra. I can't remember liking their new release either though... It's the sort of music that can take a while to get under your skin, and it probably didn't get much airplay...

message 890: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I was thinking they would qualify for erotica! :)

message 891: by Fiona (new)

Fiona McGier | 20 comments Especially the Nine Inch Nails song "Closer"! And Maynard, the singer/writer from Tool does some really sexually-charged stuff with one of his other bands, Puscifer.

If you pick Chicago, many of my Reyes Family Romances are set in Chicago, and in the suburb of West Chicago. Hispanic, inter-racial erotic romance.

I'm so glad that you like it! I thought that it sounded fun. I'm having a good time with all of these challenges.

You can go ahead and use it when you have the time. I'm still new here and launching something sounds a little...daunting! I wouldn't even know where to start or how to do it! Let me know if you need more band ideas though.

great idea! can we pick our own bands, maybe as bonuses? I like a few of the one's listed, but it would be more fun for me to list the bands I'm listening to

message 895: by exxcentrica (new)

exxcentrica Kami mentioned William Shakespeare for April.

Shakespeare in the Park is a very popular activity in many cities every summer.

I think a great challenge for the summer would involve the various works of Shakespeare as categories. (Kami mentioned a book about fairies for A Midsummer Night's Dream)
