SOLVED. Fairground built on a cliff that is being mined from underneath. [s]

I read this when I was younger and it was about someone going to work at a fairground or theme park I think - where there were lots areas that were out of bounds to staff and visitors.

They eventually found out that it was built on a hill that was being mined from underneath them and therefore the fairground was likely to collapse any day.

I think there may have been a clown or other character that kept repeating some sort of rhyme as well

I don't think it was full on horror but it was creepy. I'm 32 and read it in my teens. Don't think it was a kids books - young adult at the least.

What made the book creepy? Any paranormal elements?

I think the main character was a guy.

I would have read it around 1993-6 I believe.

It was creepy as there were lots of secrets being kept by the management of the park and it appeared on the surface to be a happy place. Don't think there was anything paranormal though.
