Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Works for me! You should see the size of my fabric stash!

message 852: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments You buy a lot of fabric sold door to door by muscular and bronzed young men wearing no shirts?

message 853: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Only in my dreams. *sigh*

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Funny, they never come to my door!

message 855: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Never let it be said that I didn't write a superior 'Fantasy' :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Why? What will you do if someone does say it?

*consumed with curiosity*

message 857: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments I shall direct a look of icy disdain in their direction, and I may even sneer.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments How do you know what direction they are in. For instance I may not be in Dublin aty the moment, and if you directed a look of any sort in the direction Dublin it would miss me...

message 859: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments His looks have a locating device built into them. Beware!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments It seems there is no escape!

The sneer appears to follow you around the room

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh thats what was hovering over my shoulder! I just sprayed it with some fly killer and it faded away.

message 863: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Well it would do wouldn't it. It's probably wandered off to watch Ignite leaf nostalgically through her fabric stash

message 864: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You've installed a camera haven't you? ;)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh I could do with some fabric right now. Am trying to find crafting materials and they are dead expensive.

message 866: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Ignite wrote: "You've installed a camera haven't you? ;)"

Don't need to, I could tell by the sigh :-)

A friend of mine just gets dresses etc from charity shops for the fabric

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Or an instructional manual?

message 870: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I made a charity quilt from charity shop shirts. Gave it to one of the charities to raffle.

message 871: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Recycling is brilliant, Ignite

message 872: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments But there again, I suspect we're old enough to remember the rag and bone men, when everything was recycled.

message 873: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I am, that's for sure! The Japanese make a lot of things from old kimono material. They do some fabulous patchwork there. Their belief is that you have extended the life of the fabric by reusing it, so in giving it to someone, you are wishing long life upon the recipient. I think that's a wonderful way of looking at it.

message 874: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments It's the sort of attitude we could do with encouraging

message 875: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I like that idea, Ignite. It's sort of respectful of the material, too

message 876: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The native Americans also have this respect for materials, especially natural ones. We've lost so much since the Industrial revolution. We're so keen to grasp the new we lose much of the old.

message 877: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments I'm not sure it's just the Industrial revolution. Terry Pratchett picked up on the second hand clothing shops, and even forty years ago people expected clothes to wear well.
I remember my grandfather and uncles working in the clothes that had been 'good' twenty years before. I still work in 'hand-me-downs' that have done good service in less stressful conditions.
I think the real blow came with cheap disposable clothes so that a girl will only wear the dress once on a night out and never expect to wash or wear it again.
It is interesting that men often horde old clothes because they're comfortable (if scruffy) and it can be wives and girl friends who throw them out.

message 878: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I think I'm a bloke at heart then! I'm currently wearing 6 year old jeans and a T-shirt I can remember wearing 18 years ago. It might be older!

The tshirt must class as retro then ignite, and be super cool...

It's rare for a pair of jeans to last a year with me. OK they last longer now, I perhaps get two years out of them, but I could wear out any pair in a year :-)

message 884: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I just cut a bit of fraying off the bottom! They are worn in circulation with several other pairs of trousers so it's not continuous wear. The t-shirt has a depiction of Monet's garden on and says Monet. Jardin a Giverny.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Sorry for butting in but my daughter's off to do a Textiles and Fashion degree this autumn and she is heavily into old fabrics, scrap stores and "preloved" clothes, maybe a lot of that is my influence but I think there maybe is a move in the young towards a less throwaway mindset. I hope!

message 886: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I suspect from my teenager's room that you may be right Rosemary.

She throws nothing away.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Lol. Younger daughter also throws nothing away but that is because she is a Dirty Midden.

Fraying bits off the bottom!
Normally I've worn them thin across the thighs and sides of the legs from carrying stuff, and they're torn or the seams have pulled.
I used to reckon I would get two pairs of jeans in September, and by the following August they weren't even fit to be used as patching material :-)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Mine always go on the bum where I ride my bike and the seams between the legs where my chubby thighs rub together. Phnark.

Cheers

Not even the rubbish! I know rooms like that well... *cough*

I'm throw out the rubbish now but I don't believe in tidying up.

Well your request fetched a lot of stuff back that I'd half forgotten. Me and Sal (the young dog) went round stock this morning, and the words of 'Johnny come Lately' just kept haunting me as I tried to remember them.

Lorks. You're really doing it properly. We went to Hanoi and hung out stuffing our faces and drinking beer and just not being here. Then again, we always meant to go back... one day hey.

Enjoy.

message 899: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments erm. just had a major face stuffing and beer swilling session. ;-)

I suppose it is because it is an 'American' term so it's only fair that we speak American :-)
