Chris | 3 comments I'm a guy, and I like a good romance subplot to go along with a great fantasy story. But for the life of me, I can't seem to find hardly anything written from a male POV, or by a male author.

Here are the books I've already enjoyed:

1. Dresden Files - Jim Butcher
2. Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss
3. Alex Verus - Benedict Jacka
4. Courts of the Feyre - Mike Shevdon
5. Eddie Lacrosse - Alex Bledsoe
6. Ravirn - Kelly McCullough
7. Curse Workers - Holly Black
8. The Curse of Chalion - Lois McMaster Bujold
9. Iron Druid Chronicles - Kevin Hearne

Can anyone here recommend a few Fantasy+Romance books with a male protagonist that I could read? I just have 2 stipulations, if you don't mind:

1. Please, don't suggest books with a guy's bare chest on the cover. I just can't take a book seriously if the main selling point is manboobs.
2. Nothing with rape. I don't want to read about rape. I don't want a trilogy that ends with the protagonist's love interest getting kidnapped and raped by the villain.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

P.S.
I'm new to this website, but if anyone shares my sentiments, feel free to friend me and we can compare reading lists.

C.C. | 219 comments Like you Im also looking for UF/PNR from a male's POV, I have to admit it's difficult.

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward - Switching povs, has male protagonists. Has action, romance, drama, humor. So far there are 10 books.

Covet (The Fallen Angels, #1) by J.R. Ward - from the same author (JR Ward) switching povs but mostly males.

Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost - This is from a females pov but the male protagonists and even male supporting characters are bad asses. Also has romance, action and lots of humor.

I haven't read these two yet but they've been in my to-reads. The reviews/ratings have been great, maybe you should check it out.
The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter
Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #1) by Larissa Ione

So far that's all I've got, I hope it helps (somehow) :)

PepperP0t | 539 comments did you try Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter; Chronicles of Nick or the League Series? most of the series have non-descript covers.(immortals & sci-fi)

Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed - vamps similiar to Black Dagger Brotherhood

For Romantic Suspense there's Troubleshooters by Suzanne Brockmann or Seal Team 12 by Marliss Melton or Black Ops Inc by Cindy Gerard

I hope some of these help

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 216 comments I've got a whole shelf in my library devoted to male lead/POV UF/PNR. Along with Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, and Benedict Jacka,I'd also suggest:

Mark Del Franco's Connor Grey series starting with Unshapely Things (Connor Grey, #1) by Mark Del Franco
Justin Gustainis's Quincey Morris series starting with Black Magic Woman (Quincey Morris, #1) by Justin Gustainis
C.J. Henderson's Piers Knight series starting with Brooklyn Knight (Piers Knight, #1) by C.J. Henderson

Michelle Tempted By Books (michelletemptedbybooks) | 195 comments I have only read the first book in this series but I really enjoyed it. I really should get back to it. Dead To Me (Simon Canderous, #1) by Anton Strout Deader Still (Simon Canderous, #2) by Anton Strout Dead Matter (Simon Canderous, #3) by Anton Strout Dead Waters by Anton Strout

I think this one is YA Sunrise at Sunset (Sunset Vampire, #1) by Jaz Primo A Bloody London Sunset (Sunset Vampire, #2) by Jaz Primo

I would also recommend the Chronicles of Nick, again they are YA. Infinity (Chronicles of Nick, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Invincible (Chronicles of Nick, #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Infamous (Chronicles of Nick, #3) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

I have heard great things about the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin. Though I haven't read them yet, I plan to.

Another good one is Kate Daniels series, they are written by a husband and wife team. The first book is Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments The Song of Fire and Ice series (Game of Thrones) is a great fantasy, but not much romance at least in the first 2 /12 books (which is far as I have gotten so far). The story is epic.

Michelle Tempted By Books (michelletemptedbybooks) | 195 comments Come to think of it I'm not really sure any of those have very strong romance really. Maybe Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, like I saw someone else say.

message 9: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Tempted By Books (michelletemptedbybooks) | 195 comments Or definitely the Dark Hunters by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Start with Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon , I know that one has man boobs on the cover, but the others do not. There is a great fantasy world throughout the whole series.

Michelle(Chelle) aka Nightshade - Cake Whisperer (michmag) This is a great new YA series by a male author from a male POV.

Sweet Blood of Mine by John Corwin

Fever had its lovey dovey blush worthy moments, but in my opinion it wasn't very romantic. But still, its an EPIC series :D, it's in a spoiled female's pov though (view spoiler)

male POV and written by a male.

Terri ♥ (aka Mrs. Christian Grey) (mybookboyfriend) | 241 comments Bloodsucking Fiends (A Love Story, #1) by Christopher Moore

male and female pov and written by a male.

also very good and funny!

Caitlin (cait1204) | 54 comments I second the Night Huntress suggestion. Also, The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. The books are written by a husband/ wife duo, and although the protagonist is female, the series is amazing and should not be overlooked! The first book starts off slow, with a lot of world building, but the books are so engaging you can't help but read on!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Check out this listopia I started because I love the male POV UF books:

http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/51...

And do check out

Zero Sight (Zero Sight #1) by B. Justin Shier Zero Sum (Zero Sight, #2) by B. Justin Shier

I think this is just what you're looking for.

message 17: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) If you want to head towards Steam punk, you could try
The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook . It has really strong male and female lead characters and is just an amazing story. Yes, he is slightly barechested, but just ignore that.
I also highly recommend anything by Ilona Andrews. Their Kate Daniel's series is amazing and it has a woman on the cover. And the On the Edge Series is also really good. The first in that series is On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews .
Another author that is more UF is Rachel Caine. Her Weather Wardens series is amazing. The main voice you hear is female, but their are enough male voices in her stories as well. The first one in that series is Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine .

The first book was great! The second book was really bad though. They tried to cram so much into the plot that the whole story just imploded into mashed potatoes.

message 19: by Julianne (last edited May 25, 2012 11:51AM) (new)

Julianne | 40 comments I'm not sure how much romance is in this series but I've heard great things about the Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman.
Nightlife
Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1) by Rob Thurman

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Chris, I liked the second book a lot. There was a lot going on though.

Julianne, I love the Cal Leandros books. Many readers don't like the dark tone though.

message 21: by Chris (last edited May 27, 2012 07:30AM) (new)

Chris | 3 comments Hmm, I guess there is a disconnect between my tastes and those of the other readers on this forum. I've skimmed through most of the suggestions offered in this thread, and found nearly all of them to have unanimously bad writing, shallow characters, and/or poorly thought out plots.

I hate to be so blunt about this, as I'm sure it is alienating me from the majority of you, but there it is. The majority of these books just seem like spaghetti romance novels with unsympathetic, unrealistic characters.

I apologize if I've offended anyone. I appreciate you offering your advice, though I think I might be asking for help in the wrong place.

Thanks and good luck!

message 22: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (cait1204) | 54 comments It sounds like you're looking for UF and not PNR. Most romance subplots fall under the UF genre, because romance is the main focus in PNR, hence the name; this could be why a lot of the suggestions in this thread were not what you were looking for :)

message 23: by Alvin (last edited May 27, 2012 02:22PM) (new)

Alvin | 24 comments I'm a guy too and I enjoy fantasy with a nice side of romance too, so nice to meet ya! And yes, it's hard to find male POV other than some you've already read.

However, here's one--The Djinn's Dilemma-- I enjoyed recently which switches pov between the male genie assassin and the female love interest. Another plus, no manboobs on the cover!

The Djinn's Dilemma by Mina Khan

I have read The Iron Druid Chronicles, and I can say the Kate Daniels series is very similar.

Ana Hart (ana_hart) | 12 comments Um, well, I don't want to self-promote, but I have a book out written from the male POV. You can go to my profile and check it out if you really want to. The title is Reborn. And there are girl boobs on the cover so take that! (Well, kind of. Side boob.) It's classified as an erotic paranormal romance, though I would have tagged it as urban fantasy myself.

Bella Foxygobble (dcrain02) Great thread - I was just going to post something similar. My husband has similar issues finding series he enjoys. We have some crossover, but he gets burn out fast.

message 29: by Resa (new)

Resa (toraresa) | 9 comments Depending on how much romance you want there is a really good series by R.A. Salvatore. actually there is like 3 by him that have some romance and the main character is a guy. Legacy of the Drow is the initial series with Drizzt in it. My brothers all love it. So did I. The Legend of Drizzt Collector's Edition Book II The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, The Halfling's Gem by R.A. Salvatore
