ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~
hi everyone,i'm so pleased to find a book club devoted to history, which is a hobby of mine, and to engage in intellectual discourse on these books. i'm looking forward to reading 'master and commander' as well as 'guns, germs, and steel'. i read it years ago but look forward to reading it again. i found it fascinating and very thought-provoking.
my main historical interest is british history from medieval to post-victorian. i'm also joining this book in the hopes that it'll motivate me to read more historical nonfiction books.
i'm currently reading a work of historical fiction circa 100 years war and henry v while also plowing through 'little dorrit'.
looking forward to discussing books with everyone!
Welcome Rebecca,Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

Welcome, Rebecca. This is definitely the place to discuss history. We're only in our second week of Master and Commander, so you shouldn't have any problems catching up, even if you haven't read it before. Hope to see you in our discussions soon!

Hello Rebecca,
Please heed the advice given by Elizabeth and Alisa and please read our guidelines. They are not optional and one of our few requirements is that we add the book cover for every book mentioned, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in text. (Three adds). If we mention a book that is what we must cite; if we mention the author we must cite the author's photo when available and always the author's link. If you need help in this area, please do not hesitate to ask for help from the moderators and/or read the guidelines and also get help from the Mechanics of the Board thread.
Alisa has shown you correctly how your citations should look. We are a group which takes citations seriously and without these citations the goodreads software fails to update and populate our site correctly. So I hope you will help the group.
In terms of your interests, I would suggest jumping right in to the discussion that Elizabeth has on going for M&C.
She has provided you with the link.
We welcome you and hope you enjoy your time here.

Hi Rebecca, welcome to the group and I hope you have a lovely time with all the gang discussing history and great books. I also love British history so I hope to see you over at that thread soon.
Hi Mark Hall here. So far, curious about this group, so that's why I decided to join. I'm an archaeologist and minored in history when doing my doctorate. Right now I work for the BLM.
Hello Mark.
Glad to have you. An archaeologist. You might be the first archaeologist in the group...does the BLM mean the Bureau of Land Management.
We seem to attract a great many legal eagles because history seems to attract the law profession.
Hope you enjoy the group.

Great to see in the group!
Thank you everyone for welcoming Mark. And thank you Steven for taking the time to welcome newcomers...this is very much appreciated.
Greetings,My name is Nathan and I currently live in Lincoln, Nebraska. I just finished reading "The Coldest Winter" by David Halberstam and found it incredibly enlightening about a war that is so often glossed over in American discourse. I hope to share in many stimulating conversations as a member.
Cheers,
Nathan

Hi Michael, another warm welcome to the group, I really hope you enjoy yourself here discussing great books and moments in history.
Hi,My name is Sarah, I live in St. Paul MN where I'm a Usability/Quality Engineer at a medical device company. I got interested in Arab history a while ago, which led to histories of the Middle Ages, which branched into Byzantine history, which is leading back to the Romans, and thus to Gibbon, which led me here! I'm looking forward to discussing your current book, and to learning about new topics.
Thanks,
Sarah
Welcome, Sarah. Sounds like a fun path through history to find our group. I hope you enjoy Gibbon and other discussions we have! Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature for comments, as Bryan mentioned in comment 1281. Bryan also provided several links that should be useful to get you started in the group. Please also use the "add book/author" feature even when just mentioning an author. We both mentioned Gibbon in our comments. His link should look like this:
Edward GibbonAbove all, have fun in the group. If you need help, there are lots of us ready to assist!

Very funny Elizabeth...but Sarah you can see we take this very seriously and doing the citations correctly helps everyone. Without the links, the goodreads software just cannot do its job.
Hi Sarah, good to see you join the group. I've read a few histories on the Middle East and love Byzantine and Roman history. I am yet to read a better account of Byzantine history than that of John Julius Norwich's trilogy.

Introducing myself: AnthonyS, semi-retired professor of medicine. Read as much as time permits, very fond of history, all times/places/people/events/analyses.
Recent read: The War That Killed Achilles: The True Story of Homer's Iliad and the Trojan War by Caroline Alexander -- very scholarly, very readable.
Hi Anthony,Nice to see you join the group. I am sure you will have a great time discussing great books and great moments in history. I see you already have the adding book function pretty close to right, good effort. It's a requirement that you also add the author to the book if possible, so it would look something like this:

It would be very helpful if you took the time to familiarise yourself with these:

Hello Anthony, welcome and hope you enjoy the many aspects of history and books discussed on these threads. We look forward to your posts.
Welcome Anthony! As an erstwhile classicist your book recommendation sounds interesting indeed. Have a great time here!
Welcome, Anthony. Sounds like you'll fit right in here. Hope you enjoy the discussions, the books, and the company!
Hello, I'm Hannah and I'm currently an undergraduate in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU and my concentration is American and European Warfare in the 19th and 20th Centuries. So I'm basically a history major. At the moment, I'm in the middle of The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager, which is an interesting and entertaining look at 14th century France through the scope of one specific judicial duel that happened. I enjoy learning about all aspects of history (because it's all part of the same really long story) but I find WWI particularly fascinating.
Hi Hannah,Nice to see you join the group. I am sure you will have a great time discussing great books and great moments in history. I also like reading about warfare in history, mainly in the Napoleonic period. I see you already have the adding book function pretty close to right, good effort, it should normally look something like this:
by Eric Jager Good book, I enjoyed it as well!

Hello Hannah,
Welcome to the History Book Club. I can see that Aussie Rick gave you some good pointers on how we add book covers, author's text and photo (if available). If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Your major sounds fascinating and I am sure you will find a lot that will be potentially helpful here.
All best,
