Could it be Frightened Amazon by Aaron Marc Stein, published in 1950? Published for the Crime Club by Doubleday & Company, Inc.http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/s/a...
The main characters are archaeologists Tim and Elsie Mao.

It's certainly old enough to be the book I'm thinking of, although I don't think the main characters were archaeologists D; thanks for trying!
You know, I did find The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. "When four Englishmen venture into the "prehistoric" remote plateau of the South American jungle, they must rely on their cunning and superior intellect to escape from a band of pre-human ape-men." It appears he wrote some other jungle books as well, this one has dinosaurs in it, It's one of the books in The Professor Challenger Series...I'll keep looking.
I found The Amazon,, Killmaster Series, by Nick Carter published in 1969, but can't find a description.
This looks interesting, Don Sturdy With The Big Snake Hunters which was also published under the title Lost In The Jungles Of the Amazon by Victor Appleton (House Name)(John W. Duffield), is part of the "Don Sturdy" series, published in 1925.
Here's a link about the Don Sturdy series.

And a "wiki" article:

I think I may have remembered it completely wrong in terms of it being Adult Fiction, and now I think it's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_A...I remember some of those animals being captured, and that the book was one in a long line of 'adventure' stories. I'll try to hunt down a copy though to make sure =D
Janelle/Jerry left the group, but Amazon Adventure does seem to fit his or her description including title so we're going to call this Solved.

It sounded like there were other books in the series, and I remember the family running into this snake/cobra that stood on its tail and was like 4feet tall in the middle of the road. They also caught an anaconda.
I think it had 'Amazon' in the title, and they ran into headhunters in the book. =/
