Rosemary | 4275 comments Endless planning fun! I have made a chain but I am sure I will be tinkering with it!

message 5: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments I made my chain, too. Great fun! If we do decide to do a second chain (not that I'll have time;)do we need to start with the 2nd member who rated our last book with 5 stars, or do we just start over?

message 6: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments Oops - I had a Graphic Novel on my list - guess I'm not finished after all. At least it was #8 so I don't have to re-do too much!

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 574 comments Oops I just spent an hour of study time doing my list. but after taking a hiatus last challenge I want to jump back in on this one!

message 8: by Christin (new)

Christin (lunaratu) | 267 comments This looks like a lot of fun! Is there going to be an area where people post their lists like with AtW? I thought it was fascinating to see what everyone came up with ^_^

Start over with completely new RwS members -- you can't repeat a person.

message 10: by Christin (new)

Christin (lunaratu) | 267 comments I have to admit I got a bit carried away and made my chain as well ^_^ I'm really looking forward to the books I chose!

Liz M Jenifer wrote: "This will be my first challenge and I'm so excited. Can we start now or do we have to wait until June 1?"

Welcome Jenifer! The Summer Challenge begins on June 1st. You are allowed to use one book that you started, but have not read more than 50% of, before June 1st. If you haven't already done so, check out the Rules and Guidelines.

There are 3 weeks left in the Spring Challenge, if you want to test the waters and get sense of how the task points and style points work. I hope you'll enjoy this crazy, complex challenge as much as we do!

message 13: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments I noticed on the book chain chat some people have two members listed for book 10 and some don't. Do we need to find a second member who has rated the 10th book with 5 stars even though we are not going on from there?

message 14: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 6459 comments The tenth book on your chain only needs to be rated five stars by one member to complete your chain

message 15: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) If a member read a book but in another language, can we still use it if we read the English version?

message 16: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Rebekah wrote: "If a member read a book but in another language, can we still use it if we read the English version?"

Which book? and which member(s)?

message 17: by Jenifer (last edited May 26, 2012 11:44AM) (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments Am I correct in understanding that we cannot use style points for our TDOS books but we can use combo points? Or is it a no-no for both?

Oh, I just found this: "You cannot claim regular style points for any book you read for TDoS (nor do the TDoS tasks count as combo style points for Reading with Style's 10 and 20 point tasks)." So, I guess no combo points, right?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments No style points for TDoS at all - combo is one of the five styles.

message 19: by Jenifer (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments Okay, thanks, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments You'll learn the ropes, Jenifer. Ferreting out all the possible points is part of the fun.

message 21: by Jenifer (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments Thanks. I feel like a pain most of the time because I'm sure that all of my questions have been asked before. :)

message 22: by Connie (new)

Connie | 214 comments I think we have all been there :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments We've all been there, and we all make mistakes - still. Just this challenge, Liz and I both tried to claim a combo for a task that doesn't allow combos. Read, enjoy, try your darnedest, and then laugh at yourself if the situation allows.

hmmmm I forgot! Sorry maybe when I finally come up with a TDoS solution, I'll figure it out. I'm sheepish

message 25: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I know we aren't supposed to use YA for subchallenge. I went to the Brooklyn Library site given in FAQ but I don't see it listed as YA Assignment or YA but I think it is YA. Do we go strictly by the Brooklyn Library or can the moderaters also decide? Or am I missing where the categories are?
The book is The Mysterious Benedict Society

message 26: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 6459 comments Rebekah, The Mysterious Benedict Society is shelved as Juvenile Fiction on the Brooklyn Library site. So, it would not work for this.

message 27: by Bea (new)

Bea Good morning, folks. I just joined on Monday and am slowly reading all the threads to try to figure how the challenges run. I thought I had made my TDoS successfully but learned that I have to read them in order, which won't work as I am reading a couple of the longer ones now.

Oh, well...I will try again. This looks like fun!

Don't forget that the Summer Challenge is two challenges in one -- RwS 10 & 20 point tasks as well as TDoS and you can fit your currently reading books into RwS easily:
- Anne Rice's dad wrote a novel & qualifies for 20.9 - Fatherly
- Victor Hugo is known in France primarily as a poet (with more than 5 published poetry books) and works for 20.7 - Poet's non-poetry & 10.7 - The Past is a Foreign Country
- Charlotte MacLeod has won an Edgar & qualifies for 20.2B - Edgar Award winning authors.

message 30: by Bea (new)

Bea Oh, wow! Thanks for the help, Liz.

I have started looking at the other challenge and thinking of books for them, but I had not yet gotten to figuring out the style points. I appreciate the assistance in getting going with that!

I'd also be interested in the answer to Rebekah's question with the addition wheter omnibus or split editions would work.

I own the German omnibus Ender (Das große Spiel / Sprecher für die Toten) consisting of Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead. I read the first part of the omnibus, Ender's Game, a few weeks ago and I was wondering if I could use Speaker for the Dead (in German; Lexile score for SotD: 850) for TDoS. The English version has been rated five stars by several members, including Steven and Debbie Johnson.

And while I'm at it, what about books translated in another language and split into several parts? I'm refering to A Feast for Crows that has been rated 5 stars by Bojojoti and Alicia amongst others. I'm currently listening to the German audiobooks of that series, for which all of the volumes have been split into four parts. So would all four audiobook parts that comprise A Feast for Crows count as one book for TDoS?

message 32: by Isabell (new)

Isabell (purzel) | 255 comments I've changed my TDoS plan again, so the omnibus/split editions problem seems to be obsolete for now, but I might change my plan again (I seem to be doing that every other day), so an answer might still be helpful, for other tasks/future challenges as well, because translations of bigger books are often split into several parts (I encounter that regularly with fantasy series).

I'm about to change my plan again just now, and I was wondering, if it would be possible to change the second member that has rated to last book used in the chain after I posted that book? So far I completed Can You Keep a Secret? and used Ligeia Cochman and Debbie Hoffman but now I'm considering to use another book (I've Got Your Number) than previously planned (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan) as my second TDoS book and that would require to use Jenger instead of Debbie Hoffman

message 33: by Louise Bro (new)

Louise Bro | 477 comments I just found out that "1984" is YA (who knew?). I couldn't open the Lexile link, so I tried googling it instead. So far as I coud tell it has a Lexile score of 1090. Can anyone confirm this?

1984 is on the Canon. It will be accepted for TDoS. (It also has a Lexile of 1090, so it would have been accepted in any case.)

Liz M Isabell wrote: "I'm about to change my plan again just now, and I was wondering, if it would be possible to change the second member that has rated to last book used in the chain after I posted that book?..."

Generally, for the 15-point sub-challenges part of the challenge is planning the books you'll read ahead of time. So we prefer that you don't make too many changes, especially after posting a book.

If you do need to make a change to an already posted book, please repost the task & explain that you are re-posting because you needed to adjust the names of the members that rated the book 5-stars.

Yes, if a book has been split into several volumes, reading/listening to all the volumes that comprise the work is acceptable (see below for a longer explanation).

Isabell wrote: "I own the German omnibus Ender (Das große Spiel / Sprecher für die Toten) consisting of Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead.... I was wondering if I could use Speaker for the Dead (in German) for TDoS. The English version has been rated five stars by several members..."

Yes, you can read the German language edition of a book for which the English language edition qualifies (and this is true for all tasks).

Yes, you can read part of an omnibus work for a task as long as the selection read has been published as a stand-alone book.

Long-winded reasoning that represents a recent change in policy: For the Spring Challenge, we've switched score-keeping operations to a database program and it is easier for us (and the database) if we do not have to include every edition of every title read for challenges. Furthermore, it has always seemed unfair that participants can read the same book for the same task & earn different points because one read a 700+ page mass-market paperback with small pages & large font, while another read the <500 page hardcover edition. So, we changed the rules to reflect that the page count for all the books read for the challenge would be determined by the most popular English print edition.

You have found one of the unforeseen benefits -- it does not matter which specific edition is read as long as the selection read has been published as a stand-alone book. Therefore reading & claiming part of an omnibus as a book (your Speaker for the Dead example) or claiming several volumes as a single book (your A Feast of Crows example) is acceptable, as long as you remember to link to book they represent when posting. However, it is not acceptable to read a partial book (selected stories in an anthology, for example) if the selection read has never been published as a stand-alone book.

message 37: by Isabell (new)

Isabell (purzel) | 255 comments Thanks for clearing that all up, Liz.

I'll probably not change my mind about my second book after all (I actually quite like my current plan; the real challenge for me at the moment is not to read the book I really want to get to ahead of time; so I'll just keep it as a reward for the end).

El | 300 comments Am I right in thinking that I can't read a group read (10.10) for TDoS?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Eleanor wrote: "Am I right in thinking that I can't read a group read (10.10) for TDoS?"

TDoS doesn't have combo points, so you wouldn't get the extra points for 10.10, but if you can connect members through any book you can use it.

Rebekah (bekalynn) I can't find a lexile score for Swallows and Amazons? Will it be acceptable?

message 41: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Jul 07, 2012 04:26PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rebekah wrote: "I can't find a lexile score for Swallows and Amazons? Will it be acceptable?"

Are YA novels allowed?
Yes, with a couple of caveats. YA cannot be used for the sub-challenges (15-point tasks), unless otherwise specified. YA books can be read for the RwS tasks (10-point and 20-point tasks), but they will only earn style points if the book has a Lexile score of 800 or above. If a YA book does not have a Lexile score, it is not eligible for style points.

Oh sorry about not looking more closely!

message 43: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments If I finish my TDoS and want to start again, can I move my square peg book to the beginning of my second chain and choose a different square peg book, or do I have to have the first chain complete before reading a book to begin the second chain?

Also, do I have to have a change in my original chain approved, or can I just claim the substitute book when the time comes?

Thanks

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Usually you can move books from one task to another. This would be the exception because, as you state, you need to finish one chain before starting the other chain. In the case of changing your chain, substituting a stated book for another, yes, you can change a future book without announcing it. We do check the chain, so keeping it intact is all that is required.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments Do we have to follow the order of our chain? Say I wanted to read my fourth book next instead of my third book. Can we claim points of the fourth book without reading the third book first? Then go back to the third book, read it and claim points for that.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Sorry, Jayme, the books must be read in order.

message 47: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments Yes, I think I might say this every time, but this has been my favorite season yet;)!

message 48: by El (new)

El | 300 comments Which designation counts for the YA? I'm looking at Evil Under the Sun I find multiple versions of the book, with one being YA Assignment and the other not
and now I learn to check my chain on time :S

message 49: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Aug 27, 2012 11:57AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I check the first result at BPL that has a "book" designation. The first such result for Evil Under the Sun is a YA Assignment at most of the branches on which it appears, and it has a Lexile of 620. This book is not be eligible for TDoS.

message 50: by El (new)

El | 300 comments just wanting to doublecheck the following (from what I see the 1st book that comes up isn't YA):
Elephants Can Remember
Cat Among the Pigeons
The Mystery of the Blue Train
A Caribbean Mystery
