Start over with completely new RwS members -- you can't repeat a person.

Welcome Jenifer! The Summer Challenge begins on June 1st. You are allowed to use one book that you started, but have not read more than 50% of, before June 1st. If you haven't already done so, check out the Rules and Guidelines.
There are 3 weeks left in the Spring Challenge, if you want to test the waters and get sense of how the task points and style points work. I hope you'll enjoy this crazy, complex challenge as much as we do!

Which book? and which member(s)?

Oh, I just found this: "You cannot claim regular style points for any book you read for TDoS (nor do the TDoS tasks count as combo style points for Reading with Style's 10 and 20 point tasks)." So, I guess no combo points, right?

Which book? and which member(s)?"
hmmmm I forgot! Sorry maybe when I finally come up with a TDoS solution, I'll figure it out. I'm sheepish

The book is The Mysterious Benedict Society

Oh, well...I will try again. This looks like fun!

Welcome, Bea! This is a great group and I think you will really enjoy it.

Don't forget that the Summer Challenge is two challenges in one -- RwS 10 & 20 point tasks as well as TDoS and you can fit your currently reading books into RwS easily:
- Anne Rice's dad wrote a novel & qualifies for 20.9 - Fatherly
- Victor Hugo is known in France primarily as a poet (with more than 5 published poetry books) and works for 20.7 - Poet's non-poetry & 10.7 - The Past is a Foreign Country
- Charlotte MacLeod has won an Edgar & qualifies for 20.2B - Edgar Award winning authors.

I have started looking at the other challenge and thinking of books for them, but I had not yet gotten to figuring out the style points. I appreciate the assistance in getting going with that!

Which book? and which member(s)?"
I'd also be interested in the answer to Rebekah's question with the addition wheter omnibus or split editions would work.
I own the German omnibus Ender (Das große Spiel / Sprecher für die Toten) consisting of Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead. I read the first part of the omnibus, Ender's Game, a few weeks ago and I was wondering if I could use Speaker for the Dead (in German; Lexile score for SotD: 850) for TDoS. The English version has been rated five stars by several members, including Steven and Debbie Johnson.
And while I'm at it, what about books translated in another language and split into several parts? I'm refering to A Feast for Crows that has been rated 5 stars by Bojojoti and Alicia amongst others. I'm currently listening to the German audiobooks of that series, for which all of the volumes have been split into four parts. So would all four audiobook parts that comprise A Feast for Crows count as one book for TDoS?

I'm about to change my plan again just now, and I was wondering, if it would be possible to change the second member that has rated to last book used in the chain after I posted that book? So far I completed Can You Keep a Secret? and used Ligeia Cochman and Debbie Hoffman but now I'm considering to use another book (I've Got Your Number) than previously planned (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan) as my second TDoS book and that would require to use Jenger instead of Debbie Hoffman

1984 is on the Canon. It will be accepted for TDoS. (It also has a Lexile of 1090, so it would have been accepted in any case.)

Generally, for the 15-point sub-challenges part of the challenge is planning the books you'll read ahead of time. So we prefer that you don't make too many changes, especially after posting a book.
If you do need to make a change to an already posted book, please repost the task & explain that you are re-posting because you needed to adjust the names of the members that rated the book 5-stars.

Yes, if a book has been split into several volumes, reading/listening to all the volumes that comprise the work is acceptable (see below for a longer explanation).

Yes, you can read the German language edition of a book for which the English language edition qualifies (and this is true for all tasks).
Yes, you can read part of an omnibus work for a task as long as the selection read has been published as a stand-alone book.
Long-winded reasoning that represents a recent change in policy: For the Spring Challenge, we've switched score-keeping operations to a database program and it is easier for us (and the database) if we do not have to include every edition of every title read for challenges. Furthermore, it has always seemed unfair that participants can read the same book for the same task & earn different points because one read a 700+ page mass-market paperback with small pages & large font, while another read the <500 page hardcover edition. So, we changed the rules to reflect that the page count for all the books read for the challenge would be determined by the most popular English print edition.
You have found one of the unforeseen benefits -- it does not matter which specific edition is read as long as the selection read has been published as a stand-alone book. Therefore reading & claiming part of an omnibus as a book (your Speaker for the Dead example) or claiming several volumes as a single book (your A Feast of Crows example) is acceptable, as long as you remember to link to book they represent when posting. However, it is not acceptable to read a partial book (selected stories in an anthology, for example) if the selection read has never been published as a stand-alone book.

I'll probably not change my mind about my second book after all (I actually quite like my current plan; the real challenge for me at the moment is not to read the book I really want to get to ahead of time; so I'll just keep it as a reward for the end).

TDoS doesn't have combo points, so you wouldn't get the extra points for 10.10, but if you can connect members through any book you can use it.

Are YA novels allowed?
Yes, with a couple of caveats. YA cannot be used for the sub-challenges (15-point tasks), unless otherwise specified. YA books can be read for the RwS tasks (10-point and 20-point tasks), but they will only earn style points if the book has a Lexile score of 800 or above. If a YA book does not have a Lexile score, it is not eligible for style points.

Oh sorry about not looking more closely!

Also, do I have to have a change in my original chain approved, or can I just claim the substitute book when the time comes?
Thanks

and now I learn to check my chain on time :S
