B | 82 comments JESS -- you were so right about the Made to Be Broken cliffhanger. Argh. Liked it overall -- but definitely didn't love it like I loved the first one in the series. I'll still read the third (whenever that's going to be) but I was a bit disappointed with this one. :(

I was frustrated with it as well! Sorry if I let you know there was cliffhanger.. I'm so bad with spoilers. Although, it wasn't necessarily a cliffhanger but more like.. no resolution? Basically we ended up right where the beginning of the book started off. How frustrating. Jack needs to step up lol.

Anyway, I just finished a couple of books that I had randomly picked off the libary shelves the other day. One was Highland Knight. This was actually pretty funny, and it fufilled my sudden need to read about old fashioned Scots in kilts. Damn Moning and her highlander series!!

Then I also just finished a historical PNR Awaiting the Moon. This one was okay, but it was definitely a bit more gothic and dark than I normally read. Still the main characters were interesting.

I have Keri Arthur's newest sitting here, but for some reason I can't bring myself to read it. I'm thinking it's either going to be really bad or really good.. so maybe I'll just read another book I have Date Me, Baby, One More Time. I've heard good things and bad things about this one. So I'll have to see.

Ooh, I'd love to hear what you think of Shadow Kiss when you've finished it. I've got all of these theories, and I'm impatiently waiting for Blood Promise.

Allison (alitoni) | 46 comments I've started on the Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks and so far I'm almost finished with the second book, Vamps and the City.. The first book of the series, How To Marry a Millionaire Vampire was simply fun to read.

message 209: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I just finished Bound and Determined and I just read the short novella The Darkest Fire. They were both pretty good.

I just bought Secret Life of a Vampire and I'll probably start that sometime today. I should be doing work... but yeah. lol. Oh and I still have Keri Arthur's new one sitting here. I will definitely get to that sometime soon.

Where did you get The Darkest Fire? Did you purchase it as an e-book?

message 211: by Jess (new)

It's short, so even those who don't like reading on the computer shouldn't have too much trouble. And wattpad mobile works v. nicely on BlackBerry.

**** Spoilers for Shadow Kiss ****

Augh... I know! The first cliff hanger in the series and it's where I've read up to? I adore Dimitri and am living on faith that Lissa and her mad powers will either be able to save him or make him into an awesome new breed. Rose can not kill him. And I refuse to believe we've lost him. ;)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Jael and Darkheart - I'm not sure what's going to happen with that. All that I know is that I bawled through the entire ending of that book!!!

As for what I am reading. I finally got my shipment of the Lara Adrian, midnight breed series. So I'm reading those. I'm also reading the Cassie Palmer series. I never did read the 3rd one and the 4th is coming out next week, so I am trying to get caught up!

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) KA you bawled and I threw the book screaming un- f'ing believable
DH I'm hoping we haven'to lost him as well I really do hate cliffhangers.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Finished Bellwether, which was hilarious. I recommend it to anyone who has ever been utterly flummoxed by the fads people are willing to follow. She makes fun of a lot of things, including corporate sensitivity training, stupid acronyms, and the new age methods of raising children (you know, the kinds that say temper tantrums in the middle of the cereal aisle are wonderful expressions of childhood frustration). There's also a dash of cute romance.

Also read Gaiman's short story collection Smoke and Mirrors. Creepy and insightful and often hilarious. I think my favourite was Chivalry, about an elderly woman who buys the Holy Grail at Oxfam for 30p.

Now I'm on my first Charles de Lint, The Dreaming Place, and though this one is YA, it's dark and mysterious, just the way I like 'em!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 437 comments I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Nymphos of Rocky Flats and am enjoying it. Amusing, and unlike most things I read.

Entered a contest on the Orbit site a couple of weeks ago to win signed copies of Mike Carey's Thicker Than Water and Kate Griffin's A Madness of Angels and got word today that I've won. Woohoo! Perfect reason for me to make a start on the Felix Castor series I've got sitting on my shelf.

Yeah, but you would be commiserating with the main character and laughing at the absurdity of things. The main character HATES fads, so you want to help her throttle OTHER people.

:)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I am reading Jennifer Armintrout - Possession Blood Ties Book 2 and as usual I am not sure if I am into this book or not. I really liked Cyrus when he was evil - I mean I liked him as the vindictive vamp but now he is human in a church with feelings for a woman named Mouse UGGG and on top of that he feels guilty triple UGGG.

Anyway I really liked the first one quite a bit but I am not sure how I feel about this one. I must say I find Carrie annoying and I just want to smack her. Here is to finishing.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 187 comments Dawn,

I read the first book of that series, and I thought it was okay. I started the 2nd one and couldn't finish it. It's rare for me to totally abandon a series, but that is one of the few I know I will never pick up again.

message 225: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) I just picked up Blood Ties Book One The Turning. Just out of curiousity what didn't you guys like about it?

Maybe I won't even bother with it... There's too many good books out there to waste my time with something that's going to be so-so.

message 226: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Shannon the first one was interesting and I liked it. The Vamps are not the nice guys and I thought she had some interesting twists and turns. However the second one unless it become brilliant in the last half of the book I would think of this as a stand alone.

Your first CdL or you're re-reading the first Newford book?

message 229: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Susan: He says in the intro that he often likes to read Chivalry at his appearances. Thanks for the info-I'll have to look that up.

As for The Dreaming Place, it's my first de Lint, period. My library system didn't have the book of short stories he suggests as a starting point, so I went for this one (his suggested #2). I wasn't disappointed! As soon as I make my way through the books I have sitting here, I'm going to seek out more by him.

I also liked the first book, and then I don't know what happened. I didn't read the second one but I read the third and fourth and it was mostly just to find out what happened. But I skimmed alot of the last two books. I was completely uninterested in the story line. I would never read the books again, and I don't suggest to people to read them. But others have liked it.

I also like the first book, so I went to the library and borrowed the next two. I read the 2nd book halfway before I totally gave up. I returned both books without even attempting to read the 3rd book. It just didn't deliver what I thought it would be.

But there are some people who liked it, so I guess, you can give it a try...

message 234: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) Thanks for your input on Blood Ties everyone - I think I'll keep it but I won't be in any rush to get it read right now. I'll get curious and pick it up eventually :)

message 235: by [deleted user] (new)

I picked up the second Anita Blake book, The Laughing Corpse. I'm not sure if I'll like it yet. I really like PNR and I like other paranormal books with romantic tie ins, like Sookie Stackhouse, which is mostly paranormal mystery but you get to hear lots about Sookie's love interests and there are some good steamy scenes from time to time. I have not really been able to get into whatever it is that Anita Blake is (UF?). At least, I wasn't that into the first one. But, I'm giving it another shot. So, we'll see.

message 236: by Susan (new)

Susan (ofearna) Trust me, Anite Blake will wind up with MORE than enough steamy scenes by book 5 or so. Though in book 4? you get to meet Richard, before LKH decided she didn't like her (now) ex...

message 237: by Yz the Whyz (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 187 comments Lori,

LKH's Anita Blake series is a classic example of Urban Fantasy. There is no distinct hero/heroine romance if that is what you are looking for.

Sure, Anita will have her menagerie of men...and what hot, yummy men they are...LOL...but it's really more of her adventures than anything else.

message 238: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Yeah, Lori, UF. She'll get more involved with the men later (and then WAY more involved), but if the assassin/hard-ass/horror is what's turning you off, it might not be for you. That aspect continues as a main theme throughout. There's no real levity in the series. You might like Merry Gentry better-give that series a try. It still has its dark aspects, but Merry is more likable as a person, and the entanglements begin pretty early on.

message 239: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Susan, have no fear. If the library can't get it for me, I was impressed enough that I'll just buy it!

Priceless.

message 241: by Shanon (new)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Michelle -is that by A lee martinez. I just read her Namless Witch book. She does have some crazy characters this book has a demon duck. I have got to put GAFD on my list.

message 243: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I just finished Ravenous The Dark Forgotten by Sharon Ashwood, that was a pretty decent book. I'm not sure if it will be a series though or a solitary novel.

Anyway, not sure what I'll be reading next. I've been so busy trying to get stupid unit plans done that I haven't had as much time to read :(

message 244: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 7 comments Ok, well i've just finished reading the three Vampire Academy books.
I absolutely loved them, on a level with the Stephanie Meyer Twilight books!
Can anyone recomend a good vampire action/love book??
Let me know :)

message 245: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Yup, Jael. I'm almost done and I wanted to forget work today and finish it. I left Earl and Duke in such a precarious position! I want to hear how they get out of it!

Haven't read Witch yet. Did read In the Company of Ogres-the main character is named Never Dead Ned (because Occasionally Dead Ned hasn't got the same ring to it). I thought it was great. Pratchett-esque. This one is more Christopher Moore-ish.

And I just noticed on his website that he's got TWO more books coming soon! Excited!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 437 comments Hayley wrote: "...Can anyone recomend a good vampire action/love book..."

Hayley, if you're looking for another YA series, I highly recommend Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires, starting with Glass Houses. Your profile is private so I can't see what else you've read, but for adult UF I highly recommend Adrian Phoenix's Maker's Song series, starting with A Rush of Wings.

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

I have no problems with the assassin/horror/kick-ass chick stuff in Anita Blake. I like all that fine. I'm just used to books that add a bit of romance, or at least sex, into the mix. As an example, I love Sookie Stackhouse, which is a mystery type book, but you also get to hear all about Sookie's romantic escapades. I'm liking the second Anita book more so far, though. I think because I know that there won't be any of the romance stuff, I am able to enjoy the story more for what it is.

message 248: by Yz the Whyz (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 187 comments Lori,

If you stick around for the rest of the Anita books, it will get steamier...you'll be surprised at how sexy they will get, considering how celibate Anita is at the earlier books...
