Melissa Landers (mnlanders) Yeah, I see what you mean. And, I'd need my list of books that are on my "To-Read" list. I always forget what's on my "To-Read" list and end up buying a book I already read or a book that's not on my list. Ha ha.

message 452: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I need to do that as well with not buying books that are on my to-read list.

I've recently made a rule that I can't buy book that I haven't heard of before I go to the bookstore.

Hehe My mother's not stupid - she only gave me an allowance (as opposed to pocket money) from age 15 but I've always been responsable for buying my own books.

message 454: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I take my to read list with me every where. I no longer allow myself to buy anything that isn't already on the list. Now if the list weren't so darn long that would be much more helpful!

message 455: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments £1,000 would cover about 1/4 of my read list - how depressing!

message 456: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments I've ordered the other 2 books from the nigtrunner series last week. while I was reading the second I just thought what the heck let me just buy the other two and get done whit it.

oh weel yesterday i had book 4 on the mail, the 3 didnt arrive yet. I hate when that happens. it better be there today!

that was what I did last year - a lot.

"I'm having a crappy day- let me go order a book" :P

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yep Bnoir, I'm still clean. *sniff sniff*

message 461: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments So not book buying has suddenly become a virtuous thing?

Interesting.

Becky, I'm still not buying any books.

Fi is making this very hard for me though.

message 462: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I have bought 20 books this year so far...not to mention all the ones I've gotten through bookmooch.

OMG! I am crazy.

message 463: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments 20? Wow.

I've boughten 3.

message 464: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) *blush*

lol. Its all the freaking SERIES that I'm addicted to.

message 465: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Hahhaa.

Well, try getting them at the library. That always helps for me. I bought City of Bones, read it, and then read City of Ashes from the library.

message 466: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Yeeeeeah...but when I like a series I just have to own them.

I know...I have a problem. It happens. I don't usually pay full price at least...I go to used bookstores.

message 467: by Emma (new)

message 470: by Kandice (new)

Kandice The thrift store near my house sells books for $0.50 paperbacks, and between $1 and $2 for hardbacks, so I buy a lot of books, but mostly used. I only buy new ones if I just have to have it now and can't find it there. Like ICTC. Or Outlander.

message 471: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I think I need rehab too! I am starting to pile my books around my bookshelves and take off things I can move to school to make room... I just need to stop buying books. I put my paperbackswap on hold and I think I am ready to try... I know that sounds week, but there is sooo much temptation out there.

message 473: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I really need to stop buying more books. My bank account cannot handle me spending $25 or more on books each month. Especially since I'm buying more than I read. Since December, I've bought close to 30 books and I know I haven't read that many...

message 474: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments I'm feeling kinda naughty. I've just come from work at the library with Twilight in my paws.
I didn't pay for it and I'll have to give it back but it was bought entirely at my behest!

Even worse when I mentioned my book diet to the Head Librarian she said that if there was anything I really wanted she could buy it for the library so I could borrow it.

message 475: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I'm with you Lori, I really have to stop buying books. One I have no more room for them, 2. My husband said I can't buy anymore till I read the ones already on my shelves (there are a lot) and 3. we are suppose to be saving money not me spending money. LOL

Ok, No more buying books the rest of this year ...lol

message 477: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey "I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

I resolved to do this before Christmas, but then I scored Amazon gift certificates. Yay! But! That leaves me with THREE more books left that I'm hot to read. (I ordered 7 in all, but 4 have been read already. Wee!)

The thing about having shelves of unread books, is that no matter what mood I am in, I'm sure to have something on hand that will satisfy. My fiction shelf runs the whole gamut, really: fantasy, sci-fi, adventure, juvenile fiction, mystery, thriller, comedy, romance, chaste romance, erotica. Whatever I want, I have!

I've been bouncing back and forth between sci-fi and fantasy for a couple of months now and last night I decided to cleanse my pallet with a murder mystery. Haha! Strange application of this phrase, I know - but hey if you read, then you know precisely what I mean!

My point is that I have all of these books for a reason and I absolutely resolve to follow through with my original intent and read the dang things.

(I'm amazed at you folks who've counted your unread books! Good for you!)

message 478: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments I went to the library to get love in time of cholera-its not buying. so a point for me.

And I have to tell you guys abouy something really really stupid I did.
(I'm beating my had against the wall over it)

I ordered book 2 and 4 of the nigthrunner series instead of ordering book 3 and 4. now I have 2 copies of book 2. and have to wait another week to get book 3.

Dumb!dumb!dumb!

anyway I already picked my new ikea bookshelfs just need to go get them.

bookshelf space always makes me feel better about my tbr amount

How great melissa!!!! I whish there were more teenagers when I was one that adored reading and didn't think I was weird because I would spend so much of my free time reading and not hearing when my parents would call me!

message 484: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ooh... I just passed my first real test! (I mean, besides the one in which someone glued "A Thousand Splendid Suns" to my hand.)

My boyfriend and his friend decided that they had to make a "pit-stop" in Barnes and Noble and made me go too, since I was the one driving.

We were in there for nearly an hour!! I picked up some books, and wandered around, and got a coffee and wandered some more, but managed to not buy ANYTHING! (Except the coffee).

Yay! I feel... empowered. But that's temporary, I'm sure. ;)

message 485: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nope. I didn't. I picked them up, flipped through, and then put them back and wandered some more.

I did pick up and SERIOUSLY consider ICTC though. It was the only copy in the store, and I almost talked myself into it because "what if I can't find it later??".

Bad little shoulder-demon!

message 486: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm sorry... I shouldn't be so mean!

message 487: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I really have to be done this time. I would have bounced checks if I had not noticed that, after my bills get paid, I would not have had enough to cover my pending transactions (ie, books from amazon). Becky, What are the parameters of your no book buying?

message 488: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm not buying any new books until the remaining 98 books on this list are read or until the end of the year, whichever comes first. Actually, I only have to read 84 books, as 14 of the books on the list are incomplete series books. So once I am down to those, I will allow myself to buy new books.

I'm not going to the library, getting books through BookMooch or PaperbackSwap, no gift books, no trades, no library freebie giveaways, nothing.

And I'm being strict, much to Fiona's dismay! ;)

message 489: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments ok my second to last purchase came today from Amazon. I bought four books...I want to go to Borders tomorrow and buy one more than I am not buying anymore till I have read A LOT of them on my TBR shelf. I am having surgery at the end of the month and will be recovering for most of March so I am hoping to get a lot of reading done then.

Wish me luck! :~)

You have been soooo strong! Were they surprised?

message 491: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Becky, I think I'm going to have to start being strict with myself too. I have a whole lot more than 98 or 84 books to read, so I wouldn't be buying anything for a while. I may have to say that once I read 75 books I own that I've never read before, then I can buy or check something out from the library. I really want to give myself the caveat that if Borders comes out with a really amazing coupon (such as 40% off) then I can get something. But I know that on diets if you allow a caveat, you don't do as well...

message 492: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Lisa, good luck, both with the surgery and your book-ban!

Jeane, actually, I don't think that Thomas noticed that I didn't buy anything. He was giving me a hard time about it on the way in, but when we left, he wasn't paying me any attention. I could have bought a thousand books and he probably wouldn't have noticed.

Lori, I think 75 is a good goal. My goal actually started out as a 75-80% goal, but I figured that since I have an amount that could reasonably be read in a year (if I apply myself) that I should just go ahead and do the whole thing.
You're right though about allowing little rewards though. I'd never thought about that. Maybe at the 6 month mark I'll let myself buy a book... I'm not sure.

It's only been 44 days, 13 hours, 17 minutes and 50 seconds (*sigh*) since the "official" start of my challenge, so I'm not even sure if I can make it 3 months! Maybe I should do a quarterly reward?

But I don't know. I really want to see if I can go the whole year without getting another book.

message 493: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments A quarterly reward does sound good but make sure not to undo what you reached. You can like f.e. buy a book you really want now but not like 3-5 or more!

message 494: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Becky, I'm thinking that if I can make it to August, I'll allow myself to buy a new book to celebrate. It will celebrate back to school and it will be a reward for working all summer.

message 495: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know Jeane, that's the problem! I don't know if I would be able to narrow it down to just one book. So its better if I just stick to my goal and buy none.

Lori, That would be about 6 months, I say go for it! :)

Tera (TheBookishAbyss) | 111 comments Oooh, this thread is following the constant battle I am having with myself. I have been to Broders three times this week with gift cards and had to promise myself I wouldn't buy more than the gift card would cover. Then I had to stop at Half-Price yesterday, but I managed to escape with all the money I went in with. My goal was to get through my 2read pile over the summer and really I just succeeded in making it taller and I am still adding to it!! I need to set some boundaries for myself.

message 497: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments TIP FOR ALL BOOKAHOLICS:

Okay, go see Confessions of a Shopaholic, it made me swear off book buying until I have five hundred dollars in Chapters giftcards.

Or it just might give you the urge to buy the book...if so... don't see it.

message 498: by Lori (last edited Feb 13, 2009 07:25PM) (new)

Lori Walker I made a shelf of the books that I'm going to read before I buy any new books. There are close to 80 books on the list, which is way more than I read in a year, but it needs to be done. Because what's the point of having books if you're never going to read them?
