Group Members of the History Book Club,

One of our relationships with Random House has allowed us to offer our group members who reside in the United States free advance copies of the following book:

Enemies A History of the FBI by Tim Weiner Tim WeinerTim Weiner

We will have a special spotlighted discussion of this book beginning June 4th when the book is available to all. This is the selected book being done at this time in lieu of Persico's book which has been pushed out for release until the Fall.

We are arranging a live chat with the author (Tim Weiner) and I will keep you posted on that as time goes by. Tim Weiner will be here to discuss his book much as Sally Bedell Smitn responded to questions about her book. We will be setting up a thread called Q&A with Tim.

So for those of you who are interested in not only acquiring this book at no charge alongwith free shipping paid for by Random House, please post here when I open this thread and let me know of your interest. Also, send me via PM your name and mailing address so that I can place you on the list so that you can get your advance copy. I will release the list of the lucky recipients who are committed to reading and discussing this fine book with us and the author and doing a review of the book itself.

We are only being allowed 25 copies and they are only going to be available to History Book Club members from the United States who will also commit to reading the book, discussing it with us.and the author as well as writing a review. If you do not plan on doing the above, let somebody else get a chance of a free copy of this great book.

This is a great opportunity so we hope you take advantage of this and let me know of your interest.

Also send me a PM or post here if you are unable to reach me for any reason and I will contact you and tell you my History Book Club email address.

Since Roosevelt's Centurions is being put off until the Fall, the original list of recipients do have right of first refusal for this book but they must guarantee their commitment to the discussion and the terms and conditions. The Persico group will still receive their book in the Fall and we will discuss it at that time.

All Best,

Bentley

Note: This time we will be receiving the actual copies of the book.

Author: Tim Weiner

NPR Interview with the Author about the book:

http://www.npr.org/2012/02/14/1468620...

Note: The group discussed Legacy of Ashes and we were blown away by this author. This should be another blockbuster book.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL RECIPIENTS OF FREE BOOK OFFER - ROOSEVELT'S CENTURIONS

We have been advised by Random House that the sale date for Roosevelt's Centurions is being pushed out until the Fall. That means that the books will not be released to us until sometime before that date which is yet to be determined. We will do this book in the Fall and the same list of 33 folks will get the book then. I know you are disappointed and so are we; but look at the bright side - you are all going to still get the book.

Additionally, RH is offering another book for the June 4th discussion. Right now it looks like the book will be the following:

I will set up a new thread for the 33 folks who were supposed to get Roosevelt's Centurions this month to have the right of first refusal for the alternate book now offered for the June 4th read. The same terms and conditions apply because this is also a tremendous offering but we want a lively and animated discussion. If you cannot commit to this book for the June 4th discussion kick off date, then allow someone else who is extremely interested to get this offering in your spot: you will still get the Persico book and be able to participate in that discussion as agreed.

Sometime in the Fall or before, you will be sent the Persico book so do not worry. You will always be getting the book you signed up for. We will let you know on this thread when we have additional information.

I know you are disappointed with the delay; so are we.

Goodreads Synopsis of the Book: - Random House

Enemies is the first definitive history of the FBI’s secret intelligence operations, from an author whose work on the Pentagon and the CIA won him the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

We think of the FBI as America’s police force. But secret intelligence is the Bureau’s first and foremost mission. Enemies is the story of how presidents have used the FBI as the most formidable intelligence force in American history.

Here is the hidden history of America’s hundred-year war on terror. The FBI has fought against terrorists, spies, anyone it deemed subversive—and sometimes American presidents. The FBI’s secret intelligence and surveillance techniques have created a tug-of-war between protecting national security and infringing upon civil liberties. It is a tension that strains the very fabric of a free republic.

About the Author:

Tim Weiner has won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for his writing on vital issues of American national security.

As a correspondent for The New York Times, he covered the Central Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon in Washington, and reported on war and terrorism from Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Sudan, and many other nations over the course of 15 years.

His new book, Enemies: A History of the FBI, has been acclaimed as “fascinating” by The Wall Street Journal.

Legacy of Ashes, his chronicle of the CIA, was a bestseller across the United States and around the world. His fields of expertise include espionage, foreign affairs, intelligence, and Presidential power politics. He has lectured at the CIA, universities, political think tanks, and at Presidential libraries.

Tim Weiner’s trademark use of intelligence research and unique sources compose compelling narratives that are as riveting as they are important to understanding the world we live in. Weiner is currently at work on a history of the American Military.

“Fast-paced, fair-minded, and fascinating, Tim Weiner’s ENEMIES turns the long history of the FBI into a story that is as compelling, and important, as today’s headlines.” —Jeffrey Toobin

“A superb examination of a national institution and forces us to consider the price we pay to feel safer.” —Booklist, starred review

Praise

“Pulitzer-Prize–winning author Tim Weiner has written a riveting inside account of the FBI’s secret machinations that goes so deep into the Agency’s skullduggery, readers will feel they are tapping the phones along with J. Edgar Hoover. This is a book that every American who cares about civil liberties should read.”—Jane Mayer, author of The Dark Side

“Enemies is a research masterpiece. Picking through seventy thousand newly declassified documents and using on-the-record interviews, Weiner reveals startling new truths and debunks nagging old myths about the FBI. Enemies reads like a thriller, but don’t let the heart-pumping prose fool you. Weiner has written a scholarly tour de force that will be an instant classic for any serious student of American national security.”—Amy B. Zegart, Ph.D., Stanford University, author of Spying Blind

“Tim Weiner’s Enemies is the most comprehensive history of the FBI as an intelligence agency we have ever had. Based on extensive research in previously unavailable materials, Weiner gives us a fresh way to think about J. Edgar Hoover, the many presidents he worked with, and the FBI as a national security agency. The book is also a cautionary tale that is essential reading for anyone concerned about American civil liberties.”—Robert Dallek, author of An Unfinished Life

Everyone,

The selection process will end at 11PM Eastern Standard Time on April 30, 2012. Any book being temporarily held will be released to the general pool and will go to a new applicant selected.

If you are a Persico recipient and you reply at 11:02PM; note that the book will already have gone to the general pool for a new selection and will be awarded to another individual. You will still get the Persico book in the fall.

So folks this is the thread to express your interest and indicate your compliance with the procedures and requirements explained in message 15.

Competition will be fierce this time because there are less books available so express your interest right away.

If you are not selected this time, be assured that we are having another selection process very soon for another great offering and all slots will be available.

Good luck.

Bentley

We have made our decisions and I just want to point something out. All of you were asked to submit full name and full address. I know it is hard to believe but even after I reminded folks on this thread, sent them PMs and invites and pretty much stood on my head (smile); some of you never sent me your address or full name or both. I am wondering how you thought we could place you on a mailing list without the above. We went with those folks who followed directions and I am sorry if some of you lost out because of this. You might want to check your spam mailbox on your email, your PM box here and see why you are not getting your mail.
