All, please do not PM me for continued requests for the FBI book because as one can see by reading message 53, they have already been spoken for and the selection process is now complete for this book. Thank you to all of those folks who participated, followed the procedures, etc. I look forward to an active and lively discussion.

I also want to thank Random House for their graciousness in making the free copies available and providing free shipping of the books. Special thank you

I second that, Bentley.

Duane Donecker | 12 comments I would also like to thank Random House and the members of The History Book Club on Goodreads the opportunity to take part in this discussion. I am truly looking forward to starting.

Bryan Craig Awesome, Duane and if it is anything like the previous book, it will be eye-opening:

You are welcome Jason, Duane and others. And Bryan is right, I moderated Legacy of Ashes and it was some discussion and book.

Bryan Craig No doubt, Bentley, I'm prepared to have my "socks blown off," lol.

Lynette (countrygirlinthecity) | 5 comments I'm sorry I missed this. It sounds like an interesting read.

Bryan Craig The good news is that you can still purchase a copy or get it from the library, and join in!

Alisa (mstaz) I am really looking forward to reading this book. Once I picked up Legacy of Ashes (thanks to someone in the HBC who encouraged me to read it) I could not put it down. Thanks to Random House for the offer, and to Bentley for a fine job of organization. Happy to see so much interest in this book and hope that others who might procure the book on their own nonetheless decide to join the discussions.

Here is the distribution for the book: (we did not have interested parties from the New England States and Mountain States for this book - I do try to get a cross section from as many states as possible and regions).

Distribution: (20 states) - Weiner book

Northeast
New England States – 0
Middle Atlantic States – 3

Midwest
East North Central States – 3
West North Central States – 5

South
South Atlantic States – 7
East South Central States – 1
West South Central States – 4

West
Mountain States – 0
Pacific States – 10

Note: I am removing the last names from the list in message 53 (for privacy sake): by now everyone should know if they are getting the book or not. If you are confused or unsure, then send me a PM.

Yes those threads are on the site. I will try to provide some links here when I have an opportunity - but that book has as its focus the CIA not the FBI as this one will.

Cynthia Frakes (catladygeek) | 27 comments Thank you, Bentley. I'd like to review the discussion for content regarding the CIA and also to help me understand what to expect in the upcoming discussions.

You probably should expect the hard hitting and relentless style of Weiner. There are no holds barred.

Bryan Craig Yes, indeed, we will probably read more about the FBI failures than the successes.

Eric, unfortunately you are little late to the party (lol). The books are all assigned to others. See messages 53 and 71and 58. Better timing for the next offer. Hope you will get a copy of the book either on line or at your local bookstore where it is readily available.

No problem but you might find yourself jumping out of your seat when you hear some of the intelligence revelations. So safe driving, better if you are on a train (smile).

Alisa (mstaz) Bentley you are right about that!! Mike, it certainly is an enlightening book so be prepared for a few surprises.

message 82: by Mike (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mike (capng) Thanks Bentley and Alisa, I'm looking forward to it even more now.

message 83: by Karol (last edited May 08, 2012 03:02AM) (new)

Karol Well, this is all very exciting! Thank you Bently, and thank you Random House. Also thank you in advance to the author, Tim Weiner, for being available to us in our discussion! Looking forward to it.

Bryan Craig Yes, sir, I'm interested to see how J. Edgar Hoover comes out...well, he comes out pretty bad, anyway, but I suspect we will read about even more abuses of power.

The books have reached and been delivered in North Carolina. I would have thought that the folks in Virginia would have received theirs today.

Thank you Nathan and Mark for alerting us as we keep track of where the books have been delivered.

Bryan Craig I got the book last night.

Looking at it more closely, it looks like it isn't a complete history of the FBI, but its use of surveillance. Should be interesting.
