OK. I'll pencil it in too.

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel the same way! :D

I am hoping I'll get through The Master and Margarita, and Vanity Fair. Leaving Jonathan for next year seems more doable.

message 53: by Geevee (new)

Geevee As Bev said she was going to run the Mount TBR Challenge again I wondered if there was a significant anniversary that we could tie a group read into for 2013 (for example Dickens in 2012)?

If people think it's a good idea we can collect suggestions, nominate some books and vote at the end of the year (give speople a chance to get a copy before year's end so as not to break the Mount TBR Challenge T&Cs too).

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

Not a bad idea, Geevee. A few of us have marked Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell for January 1013. Hard to believe that I'm planning for next year's reads already!

message 55: by Geevee (new)

Geevee Jeannette that looks a good read - I'd like to sign up (even at the weighty 1000 pages) too if okay.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

The more the merrier, I always say! The page count on GR seems to vary, but it is at least 800 pages.

message 57: by Geevee (last edited Apr 27, 2012 02:34PM) (new)

Geevee Thanks - the great thing about this group is the wide range of books people read that lead me to ones I wouldn't normally try.

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

You're telling me!

On a side note: My husband is reading The Gathering Storm, and as is always the case with a book he really enjoys, I have been hearing excerpts at breakfast, and at bedtime. It's fascinating stuff, even though I would probably never actually take the time to read through it. Maybe someday...

sounds interesting...

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments We've had Jonathan Strange on our shelves for years so I would be interested in tackling that and hope my library has a kindle version to check out. As someone else said, that's one heck of a heavy book and we have the hardcover.

Laura and Marialyce, Jeannette and I are talking of starting this Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance: A Mystery on Sunday or Monday. Are you two still interested and would that be too short notice for you?

I can get the Kindle version Dawn.

I hope you enjoy this one! I really like the Oscar Wilde mystery series.

That's good to hear!

When are you planing to start it?

message 65: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Laura, I won't be able to start until tomorrow and haven't spoke with Jeannette today to see when she is starting. Would that work for you if it is okay with her? And do we want to start a discussion thread here for other TBR challengers to chime in?

I am in no hurry, just let me know when you and Jeannette are planning to read it. I just started "River God" which has more than 600 pages.

message 67: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments River God by Wilbur Smith? I read that years ago and found myself really liking it but more as an historical adventure than HF. I'll have to go check your updates.

I just PM'ed Jeannette to check with her. I haven't heard back from Marialyce yet, have you?

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

I posted the discussion thread, so whenever anyone is ready to comment, we're good to go.

message 69: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce Dawn (& Ron) wrote: "We've had Jonathan Strange on our shelves for years so I would be interested in tackling that and hope my library has a kindle version to check out. As someone else said, that's one heck of a heavy..."

I am away until Monday, so I could not start it until at least Tuesday as I want to see if the library has it. Baring that I could download it if it is available as an ebook but again that would not be until at least Tuesday.

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

Let's just say we all start some time this week, and post whenever anybody has the inclination. It will be an open-ended discussion, so see if you can get it from the library first, Marialyce. :)

message 71: by Marialyce (last edited Apr 29, 2012 05:39PM) (new)

Marialyce Ok I will try the library first and then if that does not pan out, I will make a bit of a kindle investment. :)

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate to buy a book that I'm not sure of. I hope your library has it. :)

message 73: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce Thanks, Jeanette.....I have two libraries close to my house that I can check out......and yes, I do not like to buy a book if I can get it for free. I can be frugal at times.....

message 74: by Laura (new)

Laura | 102 comments great girls!! I just joined the thread created by Jeannette,

message 75: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I'm so glad I checked here, I was just going to send a PM to you, Marialyce. I really hope one of your libraries has a copy, I checked mine but will be reading my paperback edition instead. I agree with Jeannette, Tuesday or so is fine, it is all of us being able to get together to read and discuss that is the important and fun part.

It's sensible frugality to not want to spend on a book you are unsure of. I got this at the Border's store closing last year so I got a good deal otherwise...

I checked in on the buddy read thread and already added my first discussion question.

message 76: by Laura (new)

Laura | 102 comments Tuesday is fine for me, even if I finished River God in the afternoon.

message 77: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I just wanted to check in on some of the possible upcoming buddy reads that have been bandied about here. Are these two still in the running Benjamin Franklin: An American Life, for Ron, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, maybe for both of us? And who is interested and for when? Nothing has to be in stone just trying to keep things straight on our end using the new system Jeannette mentioned to me.

Also there were a couple of buddy reads I'd said yes to from the personal folders but I can't seem to locate them now. If I said I was interested but you haven't heard back from me please remind me who and which book.

message 78: by [deleted user] (last edited May 02, 2012 01:10PM) (new)

I think Jonathan Strange was pushed back to 2013 by a few of us, because it's really long.

So, I've got Kim, Hayes, Caitie, Geevee, and me for 2013. I think Dawn, and Laura are interested, but maybe sooner?

message 79: by Geevee (new)

Geevee I had Jonathan Strange down as a Jan 2013 but I'm interested in reading the Benjamin Franklin book but I don't own a copy so I stray outside the Mount TBR rules :(

message 80: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce I am still interested in Benjamin Franklin: An American Life and thought about reading it in August. I am also interested in A Tale of Two Cities.

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

I have quite a few upcoming reads that are outside the challenge, but are helping someone else with the challenge.

message 82: by Dawn (& Ron) (last edited May 28, 2012 02:39PM) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Oh no, I'm in no hurry to push that behemoth, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell any closer. I can't speak for Laura but 2013 is fine for me and Ron. Still aiming for January on this one? I have this book with Kate, Chris, Catie, Hayes, Jeannette, Geevee, Ron and me.

Right now, for Benjamin Franklin: An American Life, Marialyce, Laura, Geevee and Ron. Set for August.

Set for Friday, June 1st: A Tale of Two Cities with Catie, Hayes, Geevee, Kim, Marialyce, Laura, MichelleCH, Jemidar, Margaret, Jeannette, myself and Sylvia. This one should be fun with so many people involved. Are we all first time readers or a mix?

In November, Vanity Fair, with Chris, Marialyce, Hayes, Sera, Kate, Jeannette, and moi.

The current TBR buddy read, Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance: A Mystery, starting this week if anyone else wants to join in. Currently Jeannete, Laura, Marialyce and me. Here is the thread http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

I think that is all of them, if I've left anyone out or have them with the wrong read, let me know. There are still two other books which for the life of me I can't remember who or what book, so please don't hesitate to remind me.

Edit update: sorry for the strange post before, the kitties typed their own message which ended up being an html code which eliminated the last part of my post, go figure.

I'm up for reading it in 2013 also. It's enormous! I'll be glad to get it off my TBR pile!

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll add you on, Kate.

Catie (gollywollypogs) | 53 comments Hey Jeannette, you missed me off the list for A Tale of Two Cities.
Looking forward to it...

I would love to read this book in August if that is possible and agrees with everyone's schedule.
Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

message 88: by Dawn (& Ron) (last edited May 05, 2012 07:05PM) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Marialyce, did I miss anyone for the Franklin read, in message #82 above, that you know of? Ron said he is okay with August, I will update this on our TBR thread as well.

Is there any way to make a buddy read master list, and make it a 'sticky' that comes up at the top of each page of the thread? Or some other way that it stays at the forefront?

I added Ben Franklin to the top of this thread under msg: 2. I will do that whenever we get a "group" read that's set out in the future. Or, whenever someone reminds/asks me to. :)

message 91: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Jeannette, can that list be made a sticky so it shows up no matter what page of the thread someone is reading? I'm also keeping track on our personal thread here as a back up and another way to let people know. I should add the link to that message (can you link to one message?) or page in our thread.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

I know that you can make folders/topics sticky, but I don't know of a way to make messages sticky. I know you can link to a message; I've seen it done; but I don't know how to do it. :(

If we miss anyone, they can join in when the discussion threads go up.

message 93: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Hopefully someone else will chime in that knows how to do that.

Jeannette wrote: "I know you can link to a message; I've seen it done; but I don't know how to do it. :(

Now that would be cool... But there's no link anywhere in the single message.

[Have to check something, brb]

link to page 1

link to page 2

OK, that works... you can link to a specific page of comments, which is helpful if you have a long thread. Each page has a separate URL link. Can't see how you could do a specific message.

what you can do is open a new thread with the list as the first message and make the new thread "sticky". ETA: I see the list is in the second message, so that's not a problem.

message 95: by [deleted user] (last edited May 06, 2012 11:54PM) (new)

I think I got it... let me check...

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

Ah-HA!

OK...

if you click on someone's name in the thread (not on the avatar of the person, but on the name in the gray bar above the comment), the list of comments made by that person in that specific group come up as a list. Try it now by right clicking on anyone's name.

each comment is listed with its thread title in the gray bar above it.

If you click on the thread title that thread will open, but you'll notice the URL says "#comment_50081141" at the end, eg.

Use that to link

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

this time it took me to a different place, not the one I thought I was linking to... I have to go out now, but will research more later. Sorry to leave you hanging.

message 96: by Dawn (& Ron) (last edited May 07, 2012 05:41PM) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Thanks Hayes, I was hoping you would have some insight on this. I tried right clicking in Jeannette's comment list, on the title of that particular comment and then clicked "copy link location" in the drop down menu. Let's see if this test works at all.

test link

It links to the message within that page of the thread but not the individual message, just like your "link to page 1" in message 94. Maybe your new thread with a sticky is the way to go. Can you go back and make a first message of a thread sticky?

message 97: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments On another note, Hayes and I are thinking about doing a buddy read on The Hunger Games, not because of all the buzz or the movie but because of the unexpected responses from people we know who have read it. Does anyone want to join us and give us the push we need to commit to it? If you are interested let us know what dates would work best for you too.

Sera What Marialyce said...

message 100: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I felt that push, LOL. Does that mean we are the last ones here who have not read this book or series yet?
