I've noticed that a great deal of us are rather attached and particular about our book's cover. I've often berated books for their less than satisfactory covers, or how they've failed to align with the actual characters. Since I bought my Kindle, I've noticed(due to inability to browse it effectively just yet), I've skipped the book cover, or didn't view it again after I purchased it from Amazon.com. My question is this; is the visual just as necessary? In my case, I'm seeing more proof as to the likelihood. I pride myself on my extended imagination, but I'll tell you this--- a great deal of these books I've read on Kindle, AREN'T sticking with me. I suppose it's due to the lack of association. Book cover + character faces = memory. Even ones I've read, that are in my KEEPERS list, sometimes aren't so memorable. I may need to re-read some, or in the future, keep the cover where it's easily retrievable. Given my history with romance novels, I realize I've only found my old batch because the cover was recognizable. I guess this means I never forget a face?

Shamefaced, I've also came to the conclusion that I've admired a few books more, once I've uncovered their risque covers. ;x LOL

SaturNalia | 6 comments I love beautiful covers, even super cheesy covers. Sadly enough, I've bought books or skipped books based on thier covers. I'm very visual, I like looking at pretty things. And some covers are very yummy! I'll buy a physical book instead of a Kindle book just so I can have the step back to look at.

I agree that a cover makes the story stick. On my Kindle I have the Moaning's Fever books, and one of them does not have a cover and I can't remember what the plot was just that it bugged me that there was no cover. Really distracted me from reading.

Yeah, I recently read Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey, and whilst I'm not a hardcore JL groupie, I adored this book. It moved me to tears, to address the hardship both faced and endured. It was touching....but I honestly couldn't recollect the title or author, until I dredged up this lil' pretty thing from a google search.

Golden god/goddesses amass. :D Lol I believe I will start foregoing a trial period, before reading the novel, to glimpse their visuals...otherwise I'm bleeding through these novels and can't rightly recall any remarkable points!

I agree with this. It's superficial, but I like to know how the characters will look like: hair color, clothes, etc. And even if I don't recall the plot of a mediocre book, I always remember the cover if it's a pretty one.

Sometimes I just look at my collection of Zebras and loose myself in a hypnotic trance. The colors, how pretty!

Step-backs are ok, only if what's inside is memorable. Lisa Kleypas has a ton of them, and to me they're quite blah. Here's Devil in Winter:

Then, there's this step-back by Pino, which is TERRIBLE, but would you ever forget it?:

Where are her freaking legs?

And well, don't get be started on Fabio, because I thought his covers were hot. Topaz Man had nothing on him.

Woah, methinks they're not really cuddling up. And that's a blasted shame, I love leg-wrapper covers! One-step-too-far darlin'..yessss! :D

One of my favorite hero covers is this:

Of course, the raven hair'd brute has that nightfall magic that allures me quite shamelessly! Dark hair represents a dark, intangible soul that is dire need of 'fixing'. Lol But the heroine is somewhat freakishly appalling. She reminds me of the invalid sister in the attic, in the Pet Sematary movie.

OMG!! I thought I was the only one who did that. I have a bunch of Catherine Coulter oldies with beautiful covers and some pretty racey Johanna Lindsay.

Lol, SaturNalia..you have a better cover than what I posted! But it drives my point home!

Wendy, Lady Evelyn Quince (ladyevelynquince) | 245 comments Oh those old Robert McGinnnis Lindsey covers rocked! Even better than the Duillo ones (sacrilage, but true).

Back in the day when I fancied myself an artist, I would copy and do my own versions of Lindsey covers, like Fires of Winter and Savage Thunder. Naked man thighs and and chest and everything.

My mom would smile and say, "Wow, you really are talented!" And sadly, I think she meant it.

Wendy, Lady Evelyn Quince (ladyevelynquince) | 245 comments I never liked that female cover model. There was something about her nose and profile that didn't seem right.

I think you captured the essence of why I never liked her. Creepy.

But his ass and thighs I like fine.

I don't know why I don't have this book!

Wendy, Lady Evelyn Quince (ladyevelynquince) | 245 comments I really enjoyed Prisoner of My Desire! Loved the step-back too, even if Fabio had retired as a model by then and was no longer posing for Duillo.

But that particular model worked it well and the expression between Rowena and Warrick was hot!

SaturNalia | 6 comments Prisoner of my Desire is my favorite Lindsay book, I've read it several times and have it plastic wrapped!! I'm an art preservationalist.

Fanning myself! Another excellent one. The story is good, but the cover is better!

Uh-oh. Now I know I'm in trouble. :) My hubby just looked over the monitor and joked you want to see men like that, then I can pose for you.

See you later. ;-)

LMFAO omg, you girls are a treasure. I love thee. Have my baby novella's, please! <3

Wendy, that's hysterical. LOL I was watching that movie "Sanctum" earlier in the week and on one of the scenes, the man was lying broken at the bottom of the cavern, so the main guy held him underneath the water, as a sign of compassion. I asked, would you ease me into the water/drown me, if I was crushed and broken like that? He said.."No, I'd have sex with you." Just as cool, and darkly twisted as you please. LOL

Also, Wendy..you should make a thread/post your artwork! That would be an interesting angle to the site! I mean, we can even post satiric renditions of heroes/heroines too. Lol I jus' know Karla has a few angry-crayola scribbles of shittastic heroes out there floating about. LOL

Edited: Apparently Wendy went for the best visual. LOL

Love the covers ladies! It's got me wanting to pull out my Lindsey's! Yes, for me the visual is necessary I love holding that book in my hand and while reading stop and glance at the cover(when you hit certain parts in the story) It's like "bonding" with the characters,I have read maybe one book on my reader and like Mermarie I cant remember it. It's just not the same..we live in a high-tec world but some things just cant be replaced,my books are one of them.

@ Wendy I see what you mean about the women on JL books never noticed it before..but then I was looking at other things on the cover :D

Haha! Like Rolfe from The Conqueror?? :D He's been the only one to inspire me to artistic endeavors.

As for being visual, I am so that. I remember nothing about plots and whatnot unless I read a book at least a half-dozen times, and then it's usually just the dirty stuff I remember if there was something out of the ordinary, like the wooden dildo scene from Adora, the villain shoving grapes into the heroine's hooha (and then sucking them out) in Hellion or Hero #1 bending the heroine over the kitchen table in Blaze Wyndham with bonus voyeurism from Hero #2 thrown in.

Hmmm....I guess what I'm saying is that from my old high school romance-reading days, I only remember the stuff that came straight from Bertrice Small's deliciously pervy brain. :D

But there have been a few books I've re-collected just because I came across the cover online, recognized it IMMEDIATELY, but couldn't remember dick about the actual story, including these:

I'm definitely visual, and I always stare at the cover of my book a bit before I open it (yes, every single time) to reacquaint myself with the characters and the mood. Can't do that with ebooks, and I hate the lack of versatility with these e-things. :-\ Trying to "find" something that didn't seem important THEN when you read it, but is important NOW later on in the story is a total bitch. I like to be able to flip back through what I read when I need to. Ebooks are space-savers, but that's about the only benefit I've seen so far because they really aren't that memorable. Pixels vs. paper.

Haters gonna hate. :D

message 19: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) Wow! I love those covers. I have saved a few of my books because they now being considered collectables if you have the original cover not a re-issue. I also like the Gothic Romances covers of the 60's and 70's . But, I have a kindle and they often include the cover if you have the color type or a fire. You can go back and look at them later since they are stored forever in the cloud, even if you removed it from your device. It's not the cover I remember, it's the book. At my age you would think I would have more of an old school attitude but I really love, love, love my kindle fire. You can pull that thing out anywhere and stare at the cover all day without anyone knowing what you're looking at or what you're reading. I still like to collect books though just for shelf decoration. But, one day I hope to have all of my books on my kindle.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 75 comments I gotta say I like the covers. I don't read on an ereader, but as far as print books go, if I've a choice between a plain cover or an awesome cover like the ones above, I'ma go with the awesome cover every time.
