The Thirteenth Tale emotionally scarred you?
Not sure if this would be a correct answer but ahd to think about Nell I think it was called. There is also a movie of with Jodie Foster.
I do remember I once borrowed the book and it ahd the movie cover but never read it as I didn't have time then.
elizabeth-oh no, the thirteenth tale didn't emotionally scar me, or come close. i think that chelsea was asking for books with emotionally scarred characters. and i believe that the thirteenth tale qualifies.
New novel, Waltzing Cowboys, about an old cowboy who returns to NYC to find the son he's never met. Lots of angst in the adventures of father and son. It's my second novel. The first was very serious stuff, White Lies, about the mother of a baby injured by a vaccine. I'm reading Moira Crone's Dream States right now, a short story collection. She's the latest winner of the Robert Penn Warren award from Southern Fiction Writers. And a fellow Smithie.
Flight by Sherman Alexie...just finished it...liked it...still thinking about the poor kid...happy ending though.
OMG Pamela -- I just read it as well - and I agree - I loved the ending - was worried there in the middle - I really like the way the ending of this book turned me around on a book I wasn't sure of in the middle.Wife of GR author: Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy (10/08) | Avempartha (04/09)
Ya know...I LOVE reading about crazy women. I thought of another: THE YELLOW WALLPAPER.that's a good one...
Reading about emotionally-scarred characters makes me feel better about MY crazy self!
Come Back: A Mother and Daughter's Journey to Hell and Back is an excellent book to read about scarred women.
What about..A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. I know things eventually come out alright for this young man but no child should have to go through what he did. To be honest I never finished the book (thougy hubby did and he liked it) it was just too hard for me to take.
CF wrote: "Push-Sapphire (I've never read this but from what I've been told about it, the main character is really messed up)"Dang, I read this book years ago! Yes the main character (a young, inner-city teenage girl) is "really messed up," and the author tells her harrowing story in a way that makes you LOVE her. Her voice is so unique -- Publishers Weekly calls it "by turns blisteringly savvy, rawly lyrical, hilariously pig-headed and wrenchingly vulnerable" -- that you will never forget her. I'd highly recommend this one.
I Know This Much Is True. This is one of my absolute favorite books, and has quite a lot of mental illness and emotional scarring. Read it. It's worth it.
In the book "Sharp Objects" the main character in scarred, yet functional. "The Sister" is a little twisted, you might like that.
When Rabbit Howls The main character was sexually abused by her stepfather and develops multiple personalities to cope. There are some really hard to read spots in this one.
