Kelly | 295 comments Wow, I must not listen to many female narrated audio books! I could only pick 4. There were 2 others I would've voted for, but they weren't on the list.

I finished Catching Fire and Mockingjay. I am now listening to Steve Jobs.

message 102: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I am listening to Nightwoods by Charles Frazier and narrated by Will Patton. So far, I like it very much but I am biased as I love most of his narrations.

I didn't recognize a lot of the names, either. I'm not too good at remembering, but I can recognize names when I see them. I would put all five votes for Davina Porter if I could.

Karen White (karenwhiteaudiobooknarrator) | 175 comments John wrote: "I'd have a tough time narrowing that list down to five."
There are, obviously, some great narrators missing from the list, too. But I appreciate her effort to call attention to narrators who aren't celebs! And hopefully, like Janet, listeners will be turned on to new narrators that they haven't heard before.

Nancy | 361 comments I've had to take a break the past several weeks (darnk work for travel intefering!). The last book I listened to was SO BAD - I couldn't even finish it. Just Kate. Narration was good - but story was stupid.

So I need a great one to get me back on track next week when I'm back in town....

Lisa (lisaspeechpath) | 14 comments I am just about finished with Life of Pi. I have wanted to read this for a long time-so glad I waited until I started listening to audiobooks because I think I would have skimmed some of this in print...but I really like it on audio.

It took a minute to change gears from The Hunger Games but it is good and I recently watched a bunch of James Herriot episodes so I love the simplicity.

I am listening to Life of Pi now. It is slow going for me so far. I am on part 4 out of 9.

message 120: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) Just started And Then There Were None for a bit of a break. I have not read any Agatha Christie in a long time and am doing so for another GB group. Enjoying it and it should go quickly.

Wendy T | 0 comments Last night I finished You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon. I not a big fan short stories, but truly enjoyed each story in this book. I gave this book 4 stars!

Starting Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

message 122: by Shelli (new)

Shelli | 66 comments Has anyone listened to Sea of Poppies? I'm having a really hard time getting into to and staying interested. Several of my friends have read and loved the book.....maybe the audio is not the way to go with this one....I can't say the narrator, when he is speaking in his regular voice, does much to further my interest.....

Fran Wilkins | 823 comments I'm giving up on Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West. I've given it two hours and I think I would like it much better in print. This is the first book I've added to the abandoned shelf in a long time. Hmpffff. Prior to this I finished The Potato Factory and absolutely loved it. I am looking forward to The House At Riverton since I really liked The Forgotten Garden.

Bxrlover | 109 comments Just finshed the fairly fluffy Good Harbor. Meh. Just started Clara Callan

message 127: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I like the audiobook itself, but boy the narrator Franette Liebow makes the heroine sound like a quivery geriatric Southern woman when she's supposed to be 30. The story is good though and she does the other characters fine, but the heroine sounds awful. To Die For

message 128: by Wendy T (new)

Wendy T | 0 comments Last night I finished Austenland by Shannon Hale. I enjoyed this YA book and look forward to reading the next book in the Austen series. I gave this book 3 stars.

Last night I started The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs

message 130: by Regan (last edited Apr 14, 2012 12:15PM) (new)

Regan | 138 comments Hello! I've just joined and in reading through this thread I'm seeing lots of things I've read like Life of Pi (LOVED! But boy does that ending make you re-think the whole book.) and Sense and Sensibility read by Nadia May (not remembering the whiny Marianne, but she was a bit of a whiner, so maybe it fits?).

Interested to see John's note that Nadia May has an alias. I really like her as a narrator, so perhaps I'll look for her other name as well.

I've recently decided to read all of P.D. James' Adam Dalgliesh series from the start. I've read some of them, but erratically and mostly from mid-way in the series. I just started A Mind to Murder: Inspector Adam Dalgliesh Series, Book 2 which is the second in the series. They're read by Roy Marsden who played Dalgliesh in most of the BBC series. His reading is a little rapid fire, but otherwise he's obviously a great choice. He takes more of a reading than a dramatization approach which is not what you might expect given his experience acting the material as well.

John | 3917 comments Nadia May has two other "nom-de-mic's" -- Wanda McCaddon and Donada Peters.

message 132: by Regan (new)

Regan | 138 comments Donada Peters and Nadia May are the same person? Wow. I like both of them, but didn't realize they were one and the same.

Frances (shibagirl) | 151 comments I finally managed to get into Dark Matter...finished it but I wasn't impressed ...just not my kind of book I guess (because it has loads of raving reviews on GR)(2 stars from me)

then went onto The Pilot's Wife which dispite a lot negative reviews - I rather liked. It was a completely differnt storey to which I thought it was going to be.(would have given 3½ stars)

I'm now half way through Bloodstream...a Tess Gerritsenso cant go wrong :-)

message 136: by Holly (new)

Holly Bryant-Simpson (hollish) | 1 comments Right now I'm listening to Bossypants and Enter, Night. They are completely different, obviously, but I'm enjoying both of them.

message 137: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I'm having trouble maintaining interest in Hit by a Farm: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Barn, which I purchased last month as one of my four required promo books at Audible. The author's narration works okay, but it's really focused on animals and farming; her partner seems almost Asperger's-like in her fixation on it, with Catherine loyally following along. So far, the chuckles have been fairly few and far between. Folks who were raised on a farm might appreciate this more than yours truly, with origins in a suburban housing development (and no agricultural relatives either).

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) | 108 comments This afternoon, on the commute, I started listening to my first Jo Nesbø book, " Headhunters ", and already I find myself disliking the main character, Roger Brown, immensely while the story has me intrigued. Roger is a headhunter for elite executives in Sweden, but, for kicks he steals art.

MissSusie | 2420 comments I just finished The Silence of Trees by,Valya Dudycz Lupescu narrated by, Xe Sands I loved this beautiful story the combination of Valya’s writing and Xe’s narration is so great both story and narration are lyrical. Xe’s soft delivery lends beautifully to the written word.

I am now listening to The Importance of Being Earnest this was the freebie from audible for its members it's done by LA Theater Works and full cast starring James Marsters and Charles Busch, Emily Bergl, Neil Dickson, Jill Gascoine, Christopher Neame, Matthew Wolf. I'm only a few minutes and it's hilarious already!

EDT:Oh my goodness if you haven't downloaded the freebie the Importance of Being Earnest you are missing out! It is still free to members on Audible..This is hilarious and a great cast!

message 140: by Bxrlover (new)

Bxrlover | 109 comments I thoroughly enjoyed Clara Callan and suspect that it was due in large part to the wonderful narration of the Dale sisters.

I would be interested to know how they were able to gain as much success as they did as actresses given their (subtle) speech impediments. It was a minor distraction for me while listening, but did not detract from the story at all.

I have started The Lake of Dreams, but after 1 disc am still unsure if I will stick with it.

message 141: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 295 comments I finished Steve Jobs yesterday. It was great, great insight on technology (it's so, so easy to take it for granted). Jobs was a crazy character too, which I think always makes for an entertaining book.

Now I'm listening to Northanger Abbey. Not loving Flo Gibson on this. I think I would like her on another book, but doesn't seem to be a good match for this one, IMO.

This seems to be common with Nesbø's main characters. Course, I've only ready The Snowman, but from what others who have read further in that series have said, his characters are often unlikable. I think that, in the end, that is what endears them to me - they are anti-heroes.

I wasn't going to get this. I have seen and read it several times and have lots else on my reading list. But then you said "James Marsters."

I'm curious why you dislike the character. Sounds like fun to me -- a little Thomas Crown Affair-ish.
