Few hours ago Alexandra removed

New Moon From the list "Most Interesting Magic System". Although that book does not conflict with the list's description.

list's link: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/871

Change log: http://www.goodreads.com/list/edits/8...

Some steps should be taken against this abuser.
Also that book should be return to the list.

The Twilight books do not have a "magic system" in the sense that list appears to be using it.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Dune Dune (a science fiction novel) is in that list which has no more magic system than twilight.

anyway last time i saw there were 26 people voted for the twilight series. You can't just disregard that many people's vote.

Lobstergirl Perhaps this Listopia is too personal.

I agree especially since there is one book and all of the votes come from the authors friends.

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments What's the stance on a listopia that's purpose is to list all books by a specific publisher? I've found a big handful of these for small presses. I can see arguments for and against them, so I figure I'll ask before I start spamming links. ;)

I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed. They're no different as far as I'm concerned than a list of all books by an author. Sometimes people like to check off what they've read by an author or a press. A popular list is the NYRB (New York Review Books). A lot of people collect these and are really into them, because it's a nicely curated collection, good quality works, and the cover design and cover art is interesting and noteworthy.

I can't see any arguments against them.

But the title and description are legitimate. Anyone can add books/vote books onto it. Just because no one has yet isn't a reason to delete it.

I can't see any reason these shouldn't exist, as long as their name and description is clear.

Got 9 & 10.

I know you did not address this to me but as a list it feels disingenuous

I am a huge fan of listopia lists, while I get that they are subject to sock puppeting if you will. It seems like we should try and limit that as much as possible. I think it would be different if the list creator had listed other books but the way it was done the list just does not seem legitimate actually it seems self serving, like you could not think of any other sci-fi book to add to your list. Only you but then it is ok because others can add to the list?

But that is just my two cents.

message 17: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl The list was "Best Sci-Fi of 2013." Nothing illegitimate about the title or description. The fact that 14 people voted for the single book on the list doesn't by itself disqualify the list.

If I start a list "Best Books of 1888" and my rule is that I only vote on books I've actually read, and I've only read one book from 1888, I will have created a list with only one book. Most times other people will come along and add books so the list will grow, but it's conceivable that either might not happen, or would just take a long time to happen. But the list isn't illegitimate because there's only one book on it.

message 18: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 23 comments I agree one book in and of it self does not make it seem disingenuous. Perhaps this is a list you intend to build throughout the year and hope others will help you build it along the way.

It is the fact that the author created the list, listed only one book and only the author's friends make it seem that way.

Again this is my two cents

Lobstergirl Not entirely sure what these lists are about. Are they marketing/spamming? Or are they like a list centered around a publisher, in which case I support keeping them.

Bundles are a new indie thing. I've seen them for both independent books and video games.

They bundle a group of books/games together and sell them as themed sets, with a new set being provided every so often. The consumer pays as much or as little as they want and decide how much of their money goes to the authors or the bundle company. There are also options to donate to charity. Here's the website for Story Bundle: http://storybundle.com/

I could see the same case being made for them as for publishing imprints, I don't think they offend any listopia guidelines.

message 27: by Becky (new)

Becky B (goodreadscombecky_b) | 21 comments I've been on two Picture Book Lists on Listopia today and both had numerous repetitions of Dragon Howl and The Silly Potty Book once you got down in the single vote section. These books are by the same author. It looks like someone has been just repeatedly adding those titles (often only 2 books apart in the list and only with 1 vote, so they must be doing this deliberately). I removed all but one copy of each from one list, but this looks like it could be a much bigger problem. Is there a way to track down this abuse of Listopia?

message 28: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Link?

The remove duplicates button will get rid of duplicates, so that's not an issue (or abuse). Abuse would be an author creating sockpuppet accounts to vote up a book, which Goodreads can determine.

message 29: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl It looks like the issue was that that author's books hadn't been combined, so they were getting voted onto the lists multiple times. Combining them (which I did) and then using the remove duplicates button (which I did on only two lists - those books seem to be on several dozen lists) should solve the problem.

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky B (goodreadscombecky_b) | 21 comments I'm not sure why, but I tried the duplicates button and it did not get rid of the duplicates (and yes, they were all the same book...I checked). Here's a link to all the lists Dragon Howl has been put on. I was looking at Best Children's Books EVER and I'm not sure of the other. http://www.goodreads.com/list/book/17...

message 31: by Becky (new)

Becky B (goodreadscombecky_b) | 21 comments Thanks, Lobstergirl. It was getting annoying seeing the same book over and over and over.

message 32: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments The books have to be combined for check duplicates to work. That's the only way Goodreads knows they are the same.

message 34: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I can't seem to edit this title to read "Fantasy." I get an error page. Please try.

Lobstergirl Awesome.

message 46: by Maarit (new)

Maarit | 450 comments There are these two books appearing in almost every possible Listopia list: We Wove a Web in Childhood: The Brontes at Home and Albion Imperilled. Usually in almost every list the voters are the same six people, who don't have that many books added in their profiles and who rank the book(s) usually always in 1st and 2nd places. This seems spam in my eyes and I hope this thing can be solved.

Here are the links to the books Listopia vote pages: http://www.goodreads.com/list/book/17... (We wove web..)
http://www.goodreads.com/list/book/17... (Albion..)

Here are some examples of the votes on actual lists: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/17... (places 17&18)
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/11... (146&147, don't even belong in the list first place)
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/17... (42&43)
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/30... (1&2, books not even nominated for the award).

Lobstergirl I second Maarit, those books are like fungus on Listopia. Awful, awful fungus.

I just sent an email to support about another two books about the Kennedy assassination which are making the Listopia rounds. But in the meantime, these five listopias, which I plucked from two pages worth of listopias, seem too niche. Can these five listopias be scrapped?

The 5 lists in 48 do seem unnecessarily duplicative. The fifth had the most books and the most votes; I edited it and deleted the others.
