Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm in debation, lol. I want to go right into Defiant Hero, but I'm thinking maybe I need to read something out of the romance genre first, like a cleansing.

Are you reading something right now?

message 252: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) It is for my book club, we are meeting at my house on Thursday so I need to plow through it. It sounds like it will be interesting. I sent my husband to the store to buy wine for the meeting -- he came back with only 3 bottles. 12 women talking about dysfunctional marriage will definitely need more than 3 bottles of wine!

message 253: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I've got Special Forces on my list for this month. Are we still fitting that in Regina?

message 254: by Leea (new)

Leea Count me in for Special Force, just let me know when you want to start.

Yeah, we can wait... I want to read a YA book or something. I'm reading Hunting Ground but I can't get into it and it's not the book, I just don't know what's wrong with me. lol!

Regina, you're going to need more wine, lots more wine... ha ha!

message 255: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Sweet about Special Forces. How about we do that one like, next weekend... like around the 14th? Regina, does that work for you?

I'm looking at a YA that is light on the romance, too. I need a break before I jump into another one.

I cant decide between these 3...

Ship Breaker (Ship Breaker, #1) by Paolo Bacigalupi Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus, #1) by Jonathan Stroud

message 256: by Leea (new)

Leea Unwind and Skip Breaker look good. I need to look at my nook and just pick something that's already loaded on there and read it. What a concept. haha!

I can't wait to read Special Forces, I hear it's so good!

message 257: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I also want to read this Cut & Run (Cut & Run #1) by Abigail Roux , but it falls into the romance, lol.

message 258: by Leea (new)

Leea Ha ha... You can't help yourself. Lover Reborn is a hard book to follow.

message 259: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Oh you haven't read Unwind??? I thought you had!

Around the 14th works, I will be done with my ARCs by then. Perfect.

Here is my take. Ship Breaker is a very rich world, excellent characters and world building, but in the end I wasn't in love with the story. It is hugely creative and very dark. I am definitely reading more by the author. It just wasn't that fun of a read.

Unwind was gripping and fun -- and emotional. Even though I had issues with the how, what and why of the dystopia (it started because of a pro choice v. pro life war and I don't think the author accurately dealt with either side but ...) it is a very good audio book and a very good read.

So weaker world and better story v. strong world and less interesting story. LOL.

I have never read the Stroud book.

Regina (reginar) Leea wrote: "Ha ha... You can't help yourself. Lover Reborn is a hard book to follow."

It is a very hard book to follow. Damn.

I noticed only one beat feet -- anyone notice more?

message 261: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Hahaha, well rating-wise, Unwind is the better pick. I'm just not sure.

I loved Neal Schusterman's Skinjacker series, so I'm starting to lean towards Unwind. I'm just not sure.

message 262: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Leea wrote: "D. G. I have Pandemonium but I can't bring myself to read it. Does it end in a cliff hanger?"

Yes. But that wasn't my problem but the fact that the series has devolved into the tritest plot device in YA. It's maddening.

Now I'm reading The Famous Heroine, an old historical romance. Going good so far.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Unwind!

message 264: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Haha! That's what I picked. I started it last night.

message 265: by Leea (new)

Leea Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

I haven't read much since Lover Reborn. This morning I read If I Stay (If I Stay, #1) by Gayle Forman , it's really short. 121 pages on my nook. I really liked it.

Not sure what to read next... Maybe YA!

message 266: by Susan (new)

Susan I'm reading The Secret by Julie Garwood The Secret (Highlands' Lairds #1) by Julie Garwood

message 267: by Leea (new)

Leea Love that book! Garwood is one of my favorite Historical Romance authors. Hope you like it Susan!

message 268: by Susan (new)

Susan Thanks Leea I've never read one of hers! I'm only 30 pages in but it pulled me in right from the first page!

message 269: by Leea (new)

Leea She has a huge following. Glad you like it so far :)

message 270: by Susan (new)

Susan I've read some of her contemporary books and really enjoyed them! I'm sure it will be the same for her historicals!

message 271: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Winter is Coming ladies!!! Are you watching?

message 272: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Um, heeeeeeeecks yes! I made egg rolls today, and we're getting ready for all the fun!

message 273: by Leea (new)

Leea I Wont be able to watch till 8pm my time... grrrr! I plan on putting the boys to be early.

Wendy, Yummy! I love egg rolls. Does it have some meaning or just a craving? ha!

message 274: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) No, my best friends mom made them when I was a kid and I loved them. I made them myself today, with the hubby's help. I love them.

message 275: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) You rock!!! We are getting the kids ready for bed early. :)

message 276: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Now YOU get to suffer through the spoiler tags, Leea. Heehee.

message 277: by Leea (new)

Leea Somehow I feel like that just makes you happy, Wendy? Lol! Payback is a bitch.

I ate the biggest burrito for a very late lunch today... i'm so full. I'm on a huge mexican kick. But now I have a craving for egg rolls... Mmmm!

message 278: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Hahaha!

message 279: by Leea (new)

Leea There are a lot of shows back on tonight. Here is what I have recording:
Game of Thrones (woot woot!)
The Killing
Shameless (guilty pleasure - this show is a mess)

If we don't have a GoT thread i'll start one :) More ways to torture me with all the spoilers.

message 280: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LMAO, I love Mexican. But I LOVE these egg rolls. I can just eat them and eat them and eat them.

And it does feel pretty good to be part of the in crowd, hahaha.

message 281: by Leea (new)

Leea Hahaha! I just made a post in the GoT thread... let the torturing resume

message 282: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I haven't had much time to read today. Since the weather was so clear, we drove to Santa Cruz and played on the beach, rode some rides & ate my fave, fried oreos. Now, we're driving back home.

I'm have Game of thrones dvr'ing. I can't wait!

I really like Julie Garwood. There are still so many of her books I need to get to. My fave that I read was The Bride.

message 283: by Leea (new)

Leea Kay, how fun! We plan on doing a Santa Cruz/Monterey trip after the boys are out of school. How was the boardwalk? Have they make it nicer?

message 284: by Lola (new)

Lola | 2 comments I'm in a grey book area. I'm waiting for my library to process Lover Reborn. And The Duke's Perfect Wife and Betrayal (Christina Dodd) are in transit (hopefully they'll be available soon). So, I'm re-reading a few favorites. I just finished Linnea Sinclair's Accidental Goddess and Games of Command.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I still need to try Linnea Sinclair. I've been meaning to for a while now.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I think I'm going to start Playing for Keeps (A Neighbor from Hell, #1) by R.L. Mathewson tomorrow. I want to see what the fuss is about.

message 287: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Just finished an amazing audiobook Rain Fall (John Rain, #1) by Barry Eisler . I'm not too fond of books about assassins but the author nailed it in this one. The main character doesn't justify himself but once you learn how a man like him ended up where he is, it sort of makes sense, even if it's horrible. I cried several times.

The narrator was really amazing...I'm just sad that he doesn't narrate book #2 so I'll have to switch to print.

message 288: by Leea (new)

Leea Stacia *the pusher wrote: "I think I'm going to start Playing for Keeps (A Neighbor from Hell, #1) by R.L. Mathewson tomorrow. I want to see what the fuss is about."

Might join you :) I've been wanting to read this for awhile.

message 289: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Leea, the boardwalk is still old but I think they upkeep it real well. It doesn't have a run-down feeling or anything. I want to go to Monterey too! I hope to make it out there this summer. I got to search for cheap aquarium tickets before I do.

Has anyone read anything by Kristin Hannah? I'm in the mood for something chick lit/contemporary and it seems like a lot of people seem to like this author.

message 290: by Leea (new)

Leea They used to keep it up but about 10 years ago, it got really run down. I haven't been in such a long time and we spent summers there for most of my life.

if you find discounted tickets to the aquarium let me know. They're expensive.

Sorry, I haven't read any Kristin Hannah. A few of my friends love her.

message 291: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Leea, i don't remember how it looked when I was younger. I do think the rides are clean and the restrooms are clean. The arcades seem to have the 'older' feeling compared to the outside of the boardwalk but still wasn't too bad. You'll have to let me know when you go. I just don't remember how run-down it was in the past.

I hoping that there will be a living social or groupon deal for the Monterey aquarium. There use to be a buy 1 get 1 free coupon in the entertainment book but that's no longer there. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I used to go to the boardwalk every year from childhood until my mid 20's. I haven't been back in about 8 years. It's a shame if it's getting run down. There's so much to do for families (and while on a date) there.

message 293: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I finsihed the audio of A Bad Day for Pretty (Bad Day #2) by Sophie Littlefield I just love these books. I am holding myself from buying the third in the series (my library doesn't have the WMA/MP3 or the CD), #4 is out in June and the author sent it to me to review, so I likely will buy it sooner rather than later. I never would have guessed that one of my favorite series would have as a character a 50 year old widow who runs a sewing shop during the day and an abused women's protection service by night. It is funny, sexy and has interesting commentary. When I say sexy -- I don't mean there is sex, but there isn't any .... yet. I think there may be some in the third book.

I am starting the audio of Forbidden Falls (Virgin River, #9) by Robyn Carr and I am loving this one!!! I love the set up.

I am surprised to be enjoying Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates . It is not really dated at all. I am always surprised, and maybe I shouldn't be -- to find that books written in the 40s, 50s and 60s feel modern. This feels modern. I am constantly worried that my marriage is like this marriage though, lol. I keep highlighting parts and wanting to ask my husband -- we don't do that do we?

I have these two on the backburner for when I finish Revolutionary Road Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1) by Steven Erikson Wool 3 Casting Off by Hugh Howey

Gardens is recommended for fans of GoT, which is why I started it.

message 294: by Leea (new)

Leea I just finished Where She Went (If I Stay, #2) by Gayle Forman and I really liked parts and other dragged.

I love the Bad Day Series covers. I'll have to look into those, they sound fun.

Revolutionary road. I know i've said this before but it was a great discussion book for a bunch of married women in our book club. haha! I hope you get to watch the movie, I thought they did a great job.

message 295: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I am just loving Forbidden Falls (Virgin River, #9) by Robyn Carr for some reason it is hitting on everything I love! Funny, it is one of the tamer ones in the series (in terms of sex). But I LOVE it. And boy is this heartbreaking.

message 296: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I hear so many good things about that series but have no interest whatsoever in reading it. I'm just can't take too much of small towns!

message 297: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) To apprciate this series you definitely have to like stories about small towns, rural living, babies, caretaking of children, pregnancy (and details about babies, caretaking of children and pregnancy), stories about average people. Robyn Carr incorporates these elements into her story -- so there are no heroines who have kids but there is no work involved and the kids are gone for 3/4 of the story. That is just not believable in my book. Heroines in these stories are pudgy after they have kids and get frustarted sometimes about the hardships of motherhood -- and the couples disagree. I read a review where someone criticized that for women who want babies why are they complaining about taking care of them and wanting the women to stop "whining". Well, that is one of the big issues of being a parent. It is a wonderful wonderful position to be in, I find it a daily blessing but it is very hard work and personally, I don't always want to carry that cross silently. So I appreciate storylines that go there.

Definitely not a series for everyone, but if you enjoy the above aspects -- it is a story for you. Oh, I also am a sucker for the starting over and recreate one's life theme. I love it.

message 298: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Ashamedly, I still haven't finished The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins because, believe it or not, I left it at the movie theater when I went to watch the Hunger Games movie. My sister's boyfriend picked it up for me, thankfully, so I have yet to retrieve it and then finish it up!

message 299: by D.G. (new)

D.G. That's my problem. I don't like small towns (lived in one for 10 years of my life and HATED IT) and I feel they tend to be idealized in romance.

I can take a trilogy here and there set in a small town but not so many books, LOL!

message 300: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Leea, are you around? When are you thinking we should start Defiant Hero?
