Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I was on a Ruby Oliver binge yesterday and today. I finished the rest of the series. The Boy Book A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them (Ruby Oliver, #2) by E. Lockhart The Treasure Map of Boys Noel, Jackson, Finn, Hutch, Gideon—and me, Ruby Oliver (Ruby Oliver, #3) by E. Lockhart Real Live Boyfriends Yes. Boyfriends, Plural. If My Life Weren't Complicated, I Wouldn't Be Ruby Oliver (Ruby Oliver, #4) by E. Lockhart This was such a fun read. I wish there were more but it had to end and I was happy with how it did.

message 1904: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Kay I felt the same way about the books. I wish there was more but the ending was perfect. I just recently got several books of E. Lockhart's in audio format and plan to listen to them over the next month. I am so glad I discovered her -- I owe it to GR entirely. I am so thankful for this site. :)

I liked the second book even better than the first. I can't wait for number 3!

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Regina, You'll have to let me know how her other books are. Thanks for recommending Ruby Oliver here in this thread. I'm so glad you did.

I'm not sure what to read next. I might need to find a stand alone novel with a nicely wrapped ending.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I've been scared to read Pandemonium after seeing a few responses to it.

Laura, I feel like I haven't seen you around much. Maybe I just missed some posting. How are you doing?

Finished Where Dreams Begin by Lisa Kleypas and it was just what I needed. It was a nice Kleypas book... predictable, but good.

Starting This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Leea, sorry your trip got cancelled. :( Hopefully you'll get to go soon?

Thanks! Looks like my MIL is coming for the weekend so we might get a night out instead - yippee!

message 1911: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) That sounds great! We are going out on Friday for our anniversary - -my inlaws are still here (they are leaving Sunday). And as usual I am both happy for myself that they are going but so sad for everyone else since they won't see each other for likely 9 months to a year.

message 1912: by Leea (last edited May 24, 2012 01:32PM) (new)

Leea Finished Motorcycle Man (Dream Man, #4) by Kristen Ashley and It had a beautiful ending to a fun, light series!

Not sure what to read next. I've been on a HUGE contemporary romance kick but I need something different.

My oldest graduates Kindergarten tomorrow, I can't believe he'll be a in first grade. Summer is here :)

message 1914: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I am guessing that Fallen From Grace isn't doing it for you?

I can't believe my Kdger is moving on to 1st grade either. Crazy stuff.

I finished Sleeping With the Wolf (After the Crash #1) by Maddy Barone , the beginning was about 3.5 stars and enjoyable. Middle to end about 3 stars. Predictable and recyled pnr and post-apoc tropes, but okay written. I am skipping #2 and trying out #3 (only b/c 2 got lower reviews and 3 got higher reviews): Wolf Tracker (After the Crash #3) by Maddy Barone

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Ladies, I've been lamenting my lack of an exciting life lately. Anyone have any great plans for the summer?
Been in a reading rut too. I can't seem to find anything that I can really get into. Maybe I should stick to movies for a bit until I can shake off this funk.

message 1916: by Leea (new)

Leea You just need to mix it up Kelly. Find a genre that you haven't read before of just go back to one you love :)

Were going to busy this summer:
Kids are in swim lessons
Summer camps/VBS
Summer Soccer
Swimming at our club most days :)
We're also going camping and doing a few day trips.

message 1917: by D.G. (new)

D.G. We usually vacation in August (usually go to Europe but last year we went to D.C.) We haven't planned anything this year but we'll probably come up with a destination in a few weeks.

After that, we'll just relax at home. My husband uses the Summer to relax, exercise and prepare his classes for the Fall semester.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Kay wrote: "Oh...looking forward to what you think about This is Not a Test. It sounds promising."

Most everyone I know has given it either 4 or 5 stars, even the pickier readers, so I'm excited.

My oldest finishes junior year tomorrow. He's going to be 18 and a senior this year.

I feel so flipping old even though I'm only a couple of years older than you. Ahhh...teenage pregnancy. It's the way to feel old before your time, I guess.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Stacia ~ the professional insomniac wrote: "My oldest finishes junior year tomorrow. He's going to be 18 ..."

LOL. Ah, I truly think it is kids that make you feel old. Most of the parents that my son goes to school with are many years older than me. So that easily makes you feel like you're ancient.

But on the flip side, I'm in law school with all these twenty somethings and that can either make me feel ancient because I can't relate or quite young because they all think I'm much younger than I am.

message 1921: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I have no big plans for the summer except soccer for my 4 yr old. We are going to Legoland again on June 3rd for about a week. This time we have decided to drive from the Bay Area to San Diego instead of flying. I just don't know how that will go with the kids and an 8+ hour drive :-/

message 1922: by Leea (new)

Leea 18 and a senior... watch out, lol!

My good friend had a daughter in High school and we always joke that she'll be free and i'll be strapped with these young kids. lol!

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Leea wrote: "You just need to mix it up Kelly. Find a genre that you haven't read before of just go back to one you love :)"

Thanks Leea. I know I just need to find something that "flips my switch" and haven't been able to find that book yet. I had been on a contemp kick, but now think I may go back to historical or even something steampunkish. I still need to read Heart of Steel (Iron Seas, #2) by Meljean Brook . So maybe I'll give it a try.

We did that last year. We stayed at a resort right next to the part and walked to Legoland. The kids still talk about how much fun they had, it was a great vacation. I know you'll have a wonderful time.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) But I still have the 4 year old! I don't get the break on either end.

As long as we can survive without the oldest having any accidental pregnancies, we'll at least get a bit of a break after he moves out, when Silas is in that elementary school range before hitting the teen years.

Was it the Maribisa...one of the Hilton resorts? That is where we are staying.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I love San Diego. We usually stay in old town, since that's where we went when I was a child.

message 1928: by Leea (new)

Leea We have a time share and used that, but I believe they rent rooms too. They had an amazing family pool with a kids small waterpark.

Grand Pacific Palisades Resort & Hotel, Carlsbad, CA

Did you do any shopping at the outlets? Oh, Jim was laughing when I was packing the car, I had so many bags. I shopped so much. haha!

message 1929: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Leea. Ok...so that's the same chain that we're staying at which is a Hilton Grand Vacation now. We have a time share with HGVC and we're staying at the Grand Pacific MARBRISA Resort. I wanted to stay at the Palisades but they don't have any 3 bedrooms. Did you know if you sit in on their time share meeting, you get 2 free legoland tix?

message 1930: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments And no, I didn't shop at the outlets since I was pregnant and lazy last year. LOL I will check it out this time!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) We actually went to a timeshare meeting in Vail once, just to get the free condo for the weekend.

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Stacia ~ the professional insomniac wrote: "We actually went to a timeshare meeting in Vail once, just to get the free condo for the weekend."

That's what so good about these meetings and free stuff. You just have to make sure you are strong willed and can fight their sales pitch. My hubby is so horrible and can be convinced to do anything. That's why he needs me there to set them straight. LOL

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Oh, Legoland! That sounds like such fun! I've only been to SF in CA and didn't see a darn thing. Went for a meeting and only saw the stupid convention center. I'd love to visit San Diego. Or even some of the national parks in CA.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Have any of you gone to the RomCon conventions or any like it? I saw that RomCon is in Denver in June and the schedule looked like it could be fun. Looking for trips to take by myself and this one came to mind.

message 1935: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I always want to buy it. And my husband and I dont balance each other. We react the same to everything. Which is bad and good. Kay that is good you balance each other. :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) CA is a fun state to visit. There are many ugly and congested areas but there are also a lot of beautiful beaches, redwoods, mountains, etc.

San Diego is nice because the temperature is pretty moderate year round and it's right across the border from Mexico.

We used to hit up the same few places in socal every year, San Diego being one of them. My mom had a fascination with Solvang but it's so very touristy. Anyone else been there?

message 1937: by Leea (new)

Leea Last time I sat in one of those meetings, I bought a timeshare. Now Jim just says, NO! lol!

We bought the 5 day, legoland pass $80 for the boys each... they have a huge splash park there and we wen't all 5 days. Not the whole day but half, Garrett was 3 and still napped.

The outlets in Carlsbad rock! My girlfriend and I were just talking about taking a trip to Palm Springs but then we wanted to shop at those outlets. ha!

California has some amazing parks. Yosemite, still takes my breath away. It's beyond beautiful there. My husband doing some business in Yosemite park, he's been loving it. Staying in the park and doing some morning trail runs. I'm so jealous.

There was one recently in Chicago that I wish I had gone too. So the answer is no. :) There is a SciFiComicCon in August in Chicago where the Hugo winners will be announced and I am planning on going there (the author of Fallen From Grace is planning on being there too).

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Yes, and with my husband in active duty, we can get free park stickers to get into all the national parks. So it is truly a shame that CA is so far away from the east coast!

I won free tickets to RomCon the first year that they had it. At that time, I was travelling to a lot of NKOTB concerts and their Bahamas cruise. So, I didn't go b/c travelling and leaving the kid with the hubs wasn't making him happy.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Oh, Regina, really? I should totally go to that one in August. I'd love to meet the author from Fallen From Grace. Sorry, but I just love that book.

You'l be okay -- do you have a DVD player for the kids? When I have kids under 2 (which you do), we would drive overnight (DC, northern wisconsin -- both of which are 8-12 hours from where I am). When the kids are 3+ we have been able to do those trips with DVD players. Last year we did an 8.5 hour drive and the kids were (last summer ...) 3, 5.5, 7.6 and 11.5 -- they were equally all fine (even the dog!). On the return trip we actually bought 3 new movies they had never seen before. It really helped.

Summer starts for us after next Friday.

Swimming classes for 3 youngest
Acting/drama production camp for the oldest
Band camp for the oldest
softball through June for the oldest
tball through June for the middle 2
Soccer camp for oldest (her traveling team practices year round)
Library reading program
Bike rides everyday
Neighborhood kids running group for two oldest

My husband stays home with them and takes them to a museum or zoo every week and they also go swimming 2x a week. Then he is big on playing outside so everyday they are outside playing other baseball or soccer and he gets a bunch of neighbor kids to join them. So they have a lot of fun.

We are going camping a few times but no vacations planned. Next year I am hoping to do a 2-3 week vacation driving from Chicago through the northern part of the US (Idaho, Montana, etc.) and camping out while we do it. And we took a big vacation last year and then two big ones the year before (big for us, likley not big for other people), so just a few camping trips is going to be it this year.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Kay wrote: "At that time, I was travelling to a lot of NKOTB concerts and their Bahamas cruise. "

NKOTB, really? Were you working with them?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'd like to try to get some camping in but my older one will be gone for about 6 weeks out of the summer so I doubt it will happen unless we plan it within the next couple of weeks and we're tight right now because of going away last weekend.

It would be fun though.

message 1948: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments We should all meet up at a convention one day. That would be awesome! Last year (or year before?), RT convention was in los angeles but I couldn't make it down there :(

Stacia, I've never been to Solvang either.

hahha...no! I'm just a fan. So, when they were on the west coast, me and a bunch of friends were following them from city to city.

message 1950: by Leea (new)

Leea Kay, just prepared to make lots of stops and pack lots of snacks :) A potty training kid is the worst traveler. lol!

That sounds wonderful, Regina! I'd love to take a road trip across the US. One day, right!

We play outside in our court every night in the summer. BBQ's, drinks and chatting with our neighbors. So fun!
