Love Nine Rules. Would be curious to see what you think. :)

Regina (reginar) I want to read something while I eat lunch so I will be choosing soon! Yeah, because I deserve a lunch break since I have been working so "hard" (rolls eyes).

There is some good steamy sex in Nine Rules, right?

Yes...there's good steam in it!

And you deserve a good lunch break!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Regina, how is Warm Bodies going for you? I liked that one but am curious if some of the dark humor would come across well on audio.

Tellulah, the movie is very campy horror at times. It's definitely not polished like Hunger Games, and has MUCH more gore. There were a few times I was creeped out, but there were also a few times I laughed from the cheese. It was an interesting way to spend a couple of hours, even if I had one of those : WTF did I just watch? reactions when I was finished.

Kay wrote: "I finished The Cat's Meow (Witch's Brew, #1) by Stacey Kennedy and Making Him Sweat (Harlequin Blaze #740) by Meg Maguire. I will start Always Been Mine by Elizabeth Reyes sometime today but I'm super busy at work right now. So,..."

No hurry. I'm about 10% in but I can put the book on hold until before bed tonight. It would give me an excuse to finish up Indigo Spell.

Pulled a DNF on Scent of Darkness by Margot Berwin and I feel sort of guilty because the writing was good and the idea for the story was excellent. I think that I was expecting some sort of YA/NA paranormal magic type of book and instead was saddled with some sort of adult magical realism instead, which sort of stumped me with what was supposed to be happening.

Ok. Sounds good. Work is kicking my ass today. I'm also going to the Sophie Littlefield signing tonight but I will definitely get into the book when I get home.

message 7508: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I know I'm late but I just have to say, I agree Kate Daniels, Mercy and even Downside Ghosts are all better written than Fever. Especially the first few Fever books. BUT, Barron's is so irresistible.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I don't know if I agree. I think Fever did a remarkable thing in having the readers constantly on so many mystery-guessing quests.

The excitement level was much higher for me while reading Fever than something like Mercy (which bored me half of the time with random day-in-the-life stuff, like a concert scene that took pages and pages to get past).

Post pictures!!

message 7511: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Me too, lol. The excitement level was much higher in Fever too. Fever made me it's bitch, I was hooked! More than any of the others.

I'm just not sure that has anything to do with better actual writing. I mean, when I was reading Twilight I felt like I was on crack, lmao. I couldn't put them down and read them obsessively. And they're not well written. (Not that I'm in any way comparing Fever to Twilight because I LOOOOOOVE the original Fever books. They're my favorite UF books. My reread recently was so awesome!)

BDB is another example. I love that friggin series, it's definitely in my top 5 series ever. But when I think of my favorite writers, Ward is not in there because her writing isn't actually that great. Her plot and ideas are great though.

Am I making sense, hahah? I feel like i'm struggling to explain myself.

message 7512: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Makes sense to me and I agree with everything - I had the same reaction to those same series. For me I attribute it to Fever and a twilight bringing me to UF, the same with BDB. Twilight was my first UF, then Sookie, then Fever and then BDB. So my experience with those were so unique.

message 7513: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Feb 28, 2013 04:09PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I understand. I don't think that BDB is great writing on any level, yet many of us (myself included) love the books.

But I also think that Fever has an edge over some other popular series because of the intricate world-building and mysteries surrounding the characters (some going back centuries). Moning has been caught making some cross-detail errors the further she progresses with her multiple series, but I'm actually surprised that she managed to keep as many balls in the air for as long as she did because she has a lot of background info (spanning 3 series now, some of it historical in nature) that has to match up.

I think in many ways that does take some decent amount of skill. I almost see what she does as being a lot more work than some UF series where everything flows from left to right in such a way that you don't have to backtrack too much to remember details - you can just make everything up as you go. Not sure if that makes sense?

message 7514: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I completely agree with that Stacia, she absolutely does write a very intricate world that actually crosses both Fever and the Highlander series. I would never hold it against her if a fact was wrong because it is a lot to remember. I think that that's her forte. The world is really deep and well thought out. And you know how they say she used to keep outlines on the walls around her when she wrote, and even found pictures that she tacked up on the walls, all so she'd really get into the world? Well, you can really tell. I definitely think she's seriously skilled.

GREAT worldbuilding and storyline with writing that's good enough.

My favorite writing in a UF is Downside Ghosts.

message 7515: by Leea (new)

Leea Wait for me for Grace Valley - Please ;)

I say try a Maya Banks KGI book.... I want to read those also, I wonder if it's along the lines of Troubleshooters?

message 7516: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I will wait! You got it book buddy!

message 7517: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) LOVE BDB - caught up in that world again, preparing for the next book.

Fever... well, I didn't read the Mercy books, and the Twilight, Fever, BDB stuff isn't my usual. I only stumbled into Fever because I'd read and loved KMM's Highlander series. I read BDB because Wendy highly recommended it. (Thanks, Wendy!)

Great writing? If you mean great literature, no. If you mean writing that captures your imagination and places you into that world with those characters - makes you care and want more... well, that might be a form of great writing.

Do you consider Diana Gabaldon a great writer? (Just curious.)

message 7518: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Yeah, I meant in terms of like... a wordsmith. But yes, there's a way to be a great writer in just being able to lasso your audience and hold them hostage. In that way, she's absolutely a great writer because I was consumed with the Fever books.

Yes, I definitely consider Diana a great writer.

Glad you liked NIne. :) I finished
Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews Want the next book please. Also read some disappointing HR - How to Dance with a Duke (Ugly Ducklings, #1) by Manda Collins which was a DNF for me, despite having wanted to read it for quite a while now, and Loving Lady Marcia (House of Brady, #1) by Kieran Kramer which was meh and the Marcia Brady allusion annoying.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Finally found another book that would work for a Choose-Your-Own Adventure. It was horribly awkward at the beginning but ended up being cute at the end so I liked it rather well for a freebie. :) I ended up reading it last night instead of the Mead book, since I didn't want to get too far ahead in the buddy with Kay (although I'm falling behind now because I had a hard time reading it today).

message 7538: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've recently finished reading The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway by Ernest Hemingway and Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, #13) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

The Old Man and the Sea
I enjoyed this book. At 127 pages, The Old Man and the Sea was a quick read. I managed to read the entire novel in just under an hour. It was a touching and thought-provoking tale. I admired Santiago's determination and his refusal to let his spirit be broken. I loved Ernest Hemingway's writing style. I thought it was very similar to John Steinbeck's style (who is my favourite author by the way). Although it is a very short novel, the story got quite slow and repetitive in places. It is a good novel but I honestly didn't think it was worthy of the Pulitzer Prize it won in 1953.
My full review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Lean Mean Thirteen
I enjoyed this book but I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as the previous instalment, Twelve Sharp. The plot was predictable and virtually nothing happened in it to develop the characters further. I'm getting tired of the love triangle with Joe Morelli and Ranger and I wish Stephanie would finally choose one of them or else dump them both and date someone new! Janet Evanovich has let this go on for far too long and now there's no sexual tension left between the characters.

Now I'm halfway through How To Fall by Jane Casey by Jane Casey.

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Let me know when you're gonna read it Leea. I remember learning about this topic in the 8th grade. When I went to Sophie's signing she mentioned that they didn't teach this where she grew up. When she heard about it from a friend, she just had to find out more details about it.

Regina (reginar) Hey ladies -- I missed a lot. ;) I started Garden of Stones and I couldn't keep going, it effected me emotionally and I was in a stressed out spot so I put it down. It is well done though, I really like Sophie Littlefield's style of writing.

Tellulah you and me both! Have you read the Curran POVs or the short stories there are several shorts/novellas and povs. That should tide you over. ;)

I am reading Running Scared (Sentinel Wars, #3) by Shannon K. Butcher and listening to Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1) by Isaac Marion

I think Warm Bodies is really well done, beautifully written but for some reason it isn't compelling me to listen when I am not listening. I am sure it is all mood.

All through the night rushed? I don't remember .......

For a challenge I need to pick out a book with green in the cover. So I am looking around ...
