I feel the exact same way about this book. I'm about 76%. I will likely finish this tonight. I also have feelings that I would like to pick up another book by this author right after.

Leea Me too, Kay. Which one? I was looking at Rachel's Eyes a Short Story by Ellen O'Connell , it's a short about Rachel, Annie's best friend. or Sing My Name by Ellen O'Connell Beautiful Bad Man by Ellen O'Connell

I finished and I cried so many times reading this book. It's like the love just comes of the pages. Amazing book.

As to how this book compares to the Rangers, well it's equally good in the writing and story, it's just not a series and the family support is very different. It's more about Cord and Anne. I think you'd like it Angie :)

I was lookint for as far as the writing and story went, so it sounds good! :)

Thanks, Leea!

Regina (reginar) I saw some reviews say that the writing is not great but the story makes up for that - - would you all agree?

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Yes, that's right Regina. The story makes up for it.

Gah, I hope I don't cry. Their story is tough to read at times. Why do I have to work? I just want to read.

So, Sing My Name is up next! I'm excited!

Yes, parts can be choppy and she really has too many characters going on in the story. Or at least that's how I felt (I should go put that in my review) but i've always been an emotional reader and rater so I still believe it's an awesome read.

LOL Leea! I pretend to clean all the time so I can read!! Hard part is trying to figure out where to hide my ipad so it doesn't seem like I was...

I have a few of my pickier friends who loved that book. It's on my upcoming short list, I think.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Regina wrote: "I saw some reviews say that the writing is not great but the story makes up for that - - would you all agree?"

I wish I could read something by that author but her book Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold was getting shilled non-stop in just about every forum (even after people kept trying to shut it down) for about a year on Amazon (that's back when I used to hang out there before coming to GR) and it got to be annoying and invasive to a major degree, so I probably won't on principle alone.

message 6913: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) by her?

I used to be on those forums too.

What is shilled?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It was either her or someone working with her because the person had a huge interest in making that book profit. I just remember people being upset and constantly wanting the mentions to stop because it was getting spammed in just about every single forum, over and over.

message 6916: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Ah. Interseting. I do feel for authors, I know it is hard to get readers interested. But it does get really annoying. I know it drives me crazy when authors ignore the rules of this forum and publicize their book in the ebook deals thread. I have unsubscribed from that thread due to the constant abuses - -nothing more annoying than getting a ntoification for a post, logging on and ...... it is spam.

I do still plan on reading this book though. :) But I can see why you wouldn't.

message 6917: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Jan 30, 2013 01:43PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) The mods have talked about re-working the rules and cracking down on spam in this group but I suppose we should probably move on that sooner rather than later. I've always felt sort of tied as to how much we should hamper anything in this group because Shell made the group to be more laid back from what I can tell. She's MIA though, so I don't know how she's doing or what she wants us to do with the group. It's probably time to just clean house anyway.

I know that we will shut that shit down in the YA group as soon as it's anywhere outside of the author folder but we hit the ground running with the 'no-promotions in the wrong place mentality' from the date of creation. Plus, YA authors seem to go extra hardcore with promoting, so it has to be cut off quickly before it gets out of hand.

message 6918: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) LOL - I love shut that shit down. :D

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I like channeling my inner Bettie Page.

message 6920: by Leea (new)

Leea I try to shut down the author promotions but their sneaky, haha!!

I had no clue that that was going down with Eyes of Silver, eyes of gold. Glad I didn't till after I read it because I really liked the book. I totally respect why you choose not to read it Stacia :)

It still pisses me off when authors do that. Grrrr!!

message 6921: by Leea (new)

Leea I can see you're a little feisty today - LOVE IT!!

Now all that's missing is Wendy to start taking charge. haha!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Feisty, but in a good mood this time! These days, feisty could really mean pissed off.

Maybe we should have a mod pow-wow about the group sometime soon. Not this week because my mind is being stretched to its limit, but soon. We're about due for another group re-work.

Part of me would love to bring back group reads, but we didn't seem to get much participation before. :(

message 6923: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I am sorry. I didn't mean to imply you all were doing anything wrong. I happen to love this group.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh no. I didn't take it that way at all.

We're aware that there are some things that could stand to be changed about the way the group operates. I think we'd put it off for a while because we didn't want to go against what Shell set the group up to be, but she keeps going MIA, so we might have to go ahead and make changes anyway and hope she will be okay with it.

message 6925: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I am guessing she would be okay with it. Just seeing as how she picked you all in the first place.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) She might not have picked me. Leea nominated me iirc, crazy girl.

I just finished Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon . Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I only gave it 3/5 stars. I know it's a huge favorite, but does anyone else feel like it didn't live up to the hype?

Soon I'll be starting The White Queen (The Cousins' War, #1) by Philippa Gregory for a buddy read challenge!

I would love if you brought back group reads. I feel like this group has more participation than any other group I'm in. (Not for group reads, as I've really only been here for one of those, but in general.)

Suggestion: a group I belong to that has successful group reads uses the following approach. First they solicit suggestions for a BOM from members AND they particularly ENCOURAGE authors to suggest their own book. In fact in most cases, their BOM will be one that one of their own authors wrote. Many authors, like me, will offer a mod in the group a free copy to evaluate for BOM. The reason this works so well is that many authors, like me, will feel honored to have her book selected for BOM and will be willing to contribute a few free copies for the event to guarantee a critical mass for the reading.

As a side observation on the anti-author attitude of some groups, I notice that print books and book stores are gradually going the way of the dodo. This is due to the anti-new-author attitude of publishers, most of whom will not bother to even glance at a manuscript from an unknown author. No fresh voices allowed. Some book clubs and some Goodreads groups mirror this attitude. I bet you wouldn't mind if Tom Robbins or Stephen King wanted to join your group and talk about their books.

- just a fresh voice, Jini (covers head to avoid the thumping)

J, I know you're new to our group, so you don't know we've done BOM in the past and while some months were successful, others were not. It's something we're talking about doing again and if our members are interested and participate, I'm sure we'll do it again. The BOM is not for sell, no FREE book would lure us to choose it. We don't pick our books that way or we never have in the past.

On the author promotion note. You've made several comments in the group about how our rules are restrictive to new authors. What you should understand is that when you spam us and are forceful with your book it turns me off. Meaning, I don't want to spend my hard earned cash on those books being forced upon me. I wish you luck being a new author.

Having a new author group read isn't a bad idea.

With that said, we do actually get a little apprehensive when biger name, more established, authors pop in to a thread randomly to comment about their own book. Not only does it change the feel of the conversations being had, but it hinders our group members from truly being honest about the particular book that's being read.

Thank you for your suggestion. At this time our stance on author promotions is not going to change, but if we decide to bring back group reads we can keep this idea in mind.
