Leea That looks good. I can't wait to see what you think.

I've been behind in my reading for awhile.

It's been in the 90's for the last week and all of a sudden today it's raining and upper 60's. They boys first Swim practice was canceled and they are both so bummed.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm really liking Noah but I'm only halfway in so far and I've heard mixed feelings about the ending, so we'll see. It was recc'd by some people who are working on book 2 right now, so I thought I'd check it out. So far, it's not bad for a contemporary romance (I'm really picky with the genre and very few CR's wow me). I'm having Perfect Chemistry flashbacks a little because the main guy is Hispanic and his last name is Fuentes and he grew up with a group of foster brothers and other friends down on their luck (of various ages). It's sort of a group of them who have a relationship like the Fuentes' in PC.

message 2204: by Regina (last edited Jun 04, 2012 02:29PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) I finished Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and it was too out there, too pushing the boundaries and too shocking. She writes creepy psychological twisty tales (I LOVED Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn ) but this one had such distateful charcters -- not just flawed but horribly and utterly unlikeable characters. And the stuff they said or thought was just so over the top. I was disappointed.

message 2205: by D.G. (new)

D.G. LOL! Maybe Fuentes will dethrone Reyes as the default Hispanic name? Lately it seems everybody who was Hispanic in Romance was named Reyes (both as a first and last name). I guess authors liked it because it was Spanish in origin, easy to pronounce but not as common as those ending in "EZ." :)

message 2206: by Leea (new)

Leea The sharp objects cover is awesome!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I love that cover for Sharp Objects. It looks like a book I might want to check out.

D.G. it's so funny that you say that because there do tend to be "default" names in books, especially in historical. In real life, it's interesting to see how names are sometimes regional. I got made fun of after I got married when I saw a local commercial where the person (lawyer maybe) had a certain last name and I innocently asked if that person was related to my husband's friend. It wasn't a name I'd heard much of in California. I think I made everyone's jaw drop open at my assumption. They were laughing so hard at me. I guess the name is common around this state.

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Hello from San Diego (or carlsbad). It's june gloom here so I hope the sun will come eventually.

I'm still trying to finish Empress of the Seven Hills (Rome, #3) by Kate Quinn . I find myself only enjoying Vix's POV.

If you ladies decide to start the Turner series, i will join you but this week may be tight for me.

Stacia, I'm looking forward to your review on Noah. I was actually planning on reading that after I finished with Empress.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Sorry the weather is not working out for you Kay. Usually SD is pretty decent. Hopefully it will pass soon.

Leea It's raining here Kay, I hope they sun shows up tomorrow. How was the drive? Hope the kids did okay.

Yeah, I'm fine with next Wednesday! I think I have this book if anyone needs it.

message 2212: by Regina (last edited Jun 04, 2012 03:02PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) Its funny as I have never known any Reyes in my life or Fuentes. :)

Sharp Objects is really really good -- highly disturbing but satisfying in the end. That is the best kind of disturbing novel. Gone Girl doesn't end with any sort of satisfication. I felt like the author purposely wanted to say vulgar stuff - -and I have to admit, I can be pretty vulgar, I appreciate vulgar. But on more than one occasion she would say something like "I could smell her twat on him." Or "she always smelled slighlty vaginal." But there are amazing amazing observations in this book, like about pretending to be a "cool girl" so guys will like you and that guys are in love with the "cool girl" that doesn't exist e.g. Cameron Diaz in Something About Mary, I think the quote is, "Being the cool girl means I am a hot, briliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves threesomes and anal sex, and jams hot dogs and hamburgers into her mouth like she's hosting the world's biggest culinary gang bang while somehow maintaining a size 2 ... hot and understanding. Cool Girls never get angry ...." and then this one, "He truly seemed astonished when I asked him to listen to me. He couldn't believe I didn't love wax-stripping my pussy raw and blowing him on request. That I did mind when he didn't show up for drinks with my friends."

Leea, the drive wasn't so bad. The kids slept most of the way and we stopped once to pump gas and once to eat. We made it here in 7.5 hours.

Wednesday next week would work for me for the Turner book :)

Regina, Gone Girl and Sharp Objects sound interesting. The smelling of "twat"....Hahah...I don't know how'd I'd react to that while reading.

They definitely are. A lot of times I can tell Hispanic people's nationalities by their last name (as long as it's not a very common last name like Rodriguez.)

I've known people named Fuentes & Reyes, but then, I lived in the DR until I was in my early 20s so I had exposure to tons of different Hispanic last names. Reyes is way more popular in the DR than Fuentes though.

Regina (reginar) DG, I just bought the re-release of the Fallen From Grace's author's urban fantasy book (first in a series) Disappearing Nightly (Esther Diamond, #1) by Laura Resnick (hmm, the cover is different on amazon, I will have to edit that cover).

Let me know if you are interested in reading it. :)

I started #2 in NK Jemisin's new fantasy series (I loved #1) The Shadowed Sun (Dreamblood, #2) by N.K. Jemisin

I am still listening to Dawn on a Distant Shore (Wilderness, #2) by Sara Donati and I haven't yet passed the part I stopped at when I dnfed it 2 years ago.
But I am enjoying it a lot more this time around.

Sounds interesting, Regina. Let me know how you like it and I may want to try it myself.

I'm drowning in books. I got several from the library that I've renewed several times and probably won't be able to read before the deadline. Well, at least I'm mid-way my second traveling book so I can get it on its way.

message 2225: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Its been really hard to get my son into reading. He will dnf books due to lack of interest or he will read 1 and then not like the others in a series. He is 8.5 and going into 3rd grade. It has been stressing me out. Well that is all cured. He discovered Captain Underpants and Captain Awesome and he read 4 books in 24 hours. He woke up this morning at 6:30 and said -- when does the library open, I want to get more! I was so excited. :)

My library has a pretty cool summer reading program for adults and teens. Each week the adults are entered into a raffle to win a gift card and then at the end of the summer we are entered into a raffle to win a Kindle Fire! The same for the teens, but the end of summer prize is an iPad2!

That's exactly how Lexie is. Same age and everything, lol. She'll read one in a series and then never go back to them. Or she'll read a chapter or two of one and put it down. It drives me INSANE. i told Jeff that it would be horrible having all those unfinished stories floating around in my head! And she's a multiple book at a time reader, which I'm not. Right now she's reading Peter Pan and some fictional fantasy book she bought from the library sale about wolves.

She's read and completed a handful of books though. Her most recent was The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate , which she LOVED.

message 2228: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Maybe it is the age? They are struggling to find what they like? One and Only looks both very sad and sweet. Unfortunatley, it looks like my son likes vulgar humor. My oldest would have loved One and Only. Right now she is addicted to the Camp Confidential series TTYL (Camp Confidential, #5) by Melissa J. Morgan and she is constantly warring with me b/c she wants to read certain dystopia books and I known they are not appropriate for her (she is 12).

message 2230: by Gwennie (last edited Jun 05, 2012 08:07AM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LOL, it probably is the age. I'm hoping.

I was surprised she read One and Only, honestly. She continues to pick out books that are just outside her level (like Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book), and then can't read them yet. One and Only shocked me. It was also the first time that she snuck and stayed up way to late to finish a book. Usually she's loves Goosebumps.

Lex likes the concept of dystopia too, but its part of that 'just outside her level' group. I let her try and she gives up quickly, lol.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) That is adorable. I would love to get Silas interested in some outdoors activities.

As of right now, he mainly knows about cars (including makes and models) and dinosaurs. I guess last weekend he schooled a kid on dinos while at a store with my husband.

Finished Noah (5th Street, #1) by Elizabeth Reyes and it was better than I'd been expecting. I like that the guys are all boxers instead of businessmen. The age difference was handled well I thought. It was nice to see that the twenty year old character was into hanging out with his buddies and having some drinks while playing video games. Sometimes it drives me a little crazy in books when the younger man acts as old (or older) than the woman. Some 20 year olds do act much older but I think most are still working through how to be an adult. Noah was responsible with money and working and all that but still kicked back like a young person in his free time.

message 2238: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I read and finished Keep Holding On by Susane Colasanti in one day. The subject matter was upsetting and made me want to keep going. But in the end I think it was more like an after school special or assigned reading for kids in high school. I also think it was too optimistic for what happens to bullied kids during high school when they seek help and when they stand up to their bullies. So while I couldn't put it down and I kept reading, and I felt like I was right back in high school, I don't know if it was that well written. I need to think on it. It emotionally affected me though. So I am giving it 3 stars, but I may move it up or I may not.

I just started After The Virus by Meghan Ciana Doidge which is a post-apoc/romance. I learned about it in a Apocalypse group here on GR, it is popular there and the author is a member. So I decided to read it today -- and yesterday the author friend requests me. :) She is a great person and I like her, but now I am nervous - I hope i love it. It only has 14 ratings and 9 reviews but the description sounds perfect for me.

message 2239: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) It sounds interesting, Regina. I'm going to check it out.

message 2240: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I strongly believe that any woman who reads it will be affected. I was. I just am trying to determine if it was the book and the writing or the story. The way it was told kinda bothered me. I also understand why she ended it with hope and positive things. I just don't believe the positive things would happen right there in the high school. The story of the parental neglect was so upsetting too. I don't think she intentionally did this, but it seemed like parental neglect was tied to being bullied for this character -- but I don't think that is always the case. I don't think it was a message being sent but the young girl's life in this story was very sad and upsetting.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Ladies, I feel like I've been gone for so long and have missed out on so many convos! Life has been crazy busy and I thought it would be easier once school was done. Who knew?!
I've also been dipping my toes in the YA genre. I'm currently reading Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park . While I absolutely love the heroine and her outlook, I know I'm headed for some major sadness. So that has tempered my enthusiasm a bit. Anything else exciting happening?

message 2242: by Leea (new)

Leea I really liked Flat out love. If was funny, smart and heartbreaking. I'm happy you found a YA that you like :)

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Kinda of funny, but I had no idea about all the issues that were going on with the reviews and the authors. I looked up the book on GR and saw that the authors made some comments on reviews, especially negative reviews. Sounds pretty unprofessional. Also, unfortunate because I'm really enjoying the authenticity of a Boston based book. Fun to read about all the local places that are mentioned.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I recently dropped my rating on that book because of exactly what you mentioned and added a note in the review as to why.

Which is too bad because the book was SUCH a good find and I loved it (recommended it to other people who loved it too) but the author behavior turned me off a bit. It's hard for me to separate out the two.

message 2245: by D.G. (new)

They are playing the Jays.

D.G. The Mets (when I moved to NY, I lived one stop away from Shea) but I also follow the Yankees.

I'm a baseball fan though so I can watch almost any team. In the DR, the newspapers follow all the Dominican players so since I'm very young I'm used to paying attention to a bunch of teams. :)

How's Robin Ventura doing? I remember him from the time he used to play with the Mets.

We're Red Sox fans here. Not die hards, since I am a Twins fan originally. But we do enjoy Red Sox fever and Fenway Park is so much fun. Actually, this year, our waitlist finally came up (only took 6 yrs) and we got season tickets. Unfortunately, we don't play the Cubs or the Mets, so I don't know anything about them.
