Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I totally missed your post, Stacia. Grrr...goodreads and notifications. Anyway, I love all those books you mentioned. I loved Unholy Ghosts! Also, HTK and Damaged Goods were good too which I read b/c of you. I also read Willing Victim and Aftertime b/c of Regina. You'll have to let me know when you find something similar too.

message 1402: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments BTW, Stacia, I just read your edit on Beautiful Disaster. What was the blog controversy? Was that when authors were ranting on reviewers?

message 1403: by Kay (last edited May 10, 2012 03:42PM) (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Oops, sorry....that post was all REgina. For some reason, i thought it was stacia's avatar that i saw with your post. LOL

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) That wasn't me. That was Regina, although you know I loved How to Kill a Rock Star, Damaged Goods and Willing Victim of course.

I had originally rated BD higher because it was one of those stories that reminded me of personal experiences, but then the ending started to gnaw at me and gnaw at me and gnaw at me and I realized that there was no way that the ending should have happened that way without (view spoiler) so I ended up downrating it to a 2 star book.

The author controversy thing...that had to do with McGuire and Jessica Park commenting on negative reviews and arguing with people who "didn't get the book" which was a HUGE turn off.

I actually really liked JP's book Flat-Out Love (it was nothing like BD in terms of content, in fact the story has no similarities, the authors just coincidentally happen to be friends) but I had to go back and note in my review why I was also downrating that book. I don't think reviewers should have to be afraid of authors coming after them.

message 1405: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Stacia can you think of any other books that fit that description? It is funny how you and I both were reminded of personal experiences but reacted differently.

I am okay with authors who push boundaries and do stuff I don't like and am not comfortable with, but I am also okay with myself for not liking it when it makes me feel uncomfortable.

message 1406: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments oh, i just went back to read your review for Flat Out Love. I really liked that book. I remember there were a bunch a authors talking smack to reviewers for not "getting" their book a few months ago. I hope that has since stopped. I've seen Jamie McGuire post on some other sites and arguing readers but I didn't know Jessica park did the same. Has this died down some? Or are they still stalking these readers?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Perfect Chemistry mirrored several of my experiences in High School.

I know there's a few others which hit a personal note with me because I tend to note it when I write my reviews but at the moment I'm drawing a blank as to what they were. I'm a bit brain dead today. It's been a long two weeks. SO happy my husband is finally coming home tonight.

message 1408: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Has he been working nights lately or been out of town?

I really liked Perfect Chemistry.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) He had to go out of state to clean up someone else's mess on a job site. He was actually supposed to come home a couple of days ago but some of the supplies didn't get sent to the job site on time, which is nothing new.

My little one has been a little shit with my husband gone. I love him and he's a sweetie most of the time but he misses his dad so he's been acting up, which has been adding to the stress level. Needless to say, I'm very happy that things will go back to normal somewhat tonight.

message 1410: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) God what a relief! It is so odd how kids' dynamic change when one parent is there/gone. That reminds me I should log off and go home. My inlaws are here for two weeks so I have been "working" late every night. My husband said to me today -- I think we should extend my parents stay because you never get to see them! LOL, I guess my plan isn't working.

I had to chuckle when I read this because I can so relate. I remember the first time my husband left for a long time (he's in the military) and the first day, my son broke a window. Not a good start to a year of him being gone.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh I could imagine how rough that would be. My husband had to go overseas for 6 months once but I only had my older son at the time and he was around 8 or 9 at the time iirc so it wasn't too bad. I couldn't imagine doing it with a little one.

message 1413: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) One year? Oh my, where was he deployed to? I could not handle that. Is he still gone? Sorry that is way too many questions, feel free not to answer.

Kelly, do you enjoy military romance novels or are they just not right/or too close to home? Military romance are some of my favorites (like Virgin River by Carr and Troublehsooters by Brockmann) but I never know if those are realistic or not.

message 1414: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I'm glad he's coming back tonight, stacia. I hate it when my hubby is gone. That's when I really feel like a single parent.

Kelly, what branch in the military is your husband in? Where are you guys stationed?

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments Regina, you're too funny. No secrets here. My husband is in the Army. Actually, I'm very fortunate that my husband hasn't been deployed, yet. And if he ever is, he wouldn't be any sort of combat position. He was actually gone for training. The only difficult part was that we couldn't talk with him for over 9 weeks. I'd never been apart from him for more than a week and then not being in contact was really rough.
As far a military romances, I guess I've never really tried them. I tend to stay away from things that seem too close to home. Otherwise, I have a terrible tendency to nitpick and get pulled out of the story. To me, if it isn't accurate, I find it jarring.

message 1416: by Leea (new)

Leea I need to read Unholy Ghosts and Aftertime... I need more hours in the day. lol!

message 1417: by Leea (new)

Leea Stacia, so glad he's coming home. I hate when my husband is out of town. He's been home the last two weeks but usually he's gone 2-3 days a week.

I could not handle my husband being gone for 6 months and I was left alone with both boys - I would go crazy!

I hate the way my kids act when their dads gone, they cry at bedtime at by that time i've used up all my patience and just want them in bed. haha!

Regina, my FIL is here... ugh! I don't have an office to stay at so i'm stuck here entertaining him. lol!

I've been so busy, I miss chatting with you ladies.

message 1418: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Indidnt know he was still there!!!!!! Has he been nice?

message 1419: by Leea (new)

Leea He stays for 2 weeks each time but not with us the whole time. My husband can only take his dad for 3 days at a time. He's staying tonight and leaving Saturday, I believe. We've just been so busy or he would have stayed more.

He wanted Jim and Him to go to a movie Sunday and was mad that Jim told him it was mothers day and that he was going to take care of the boys. Then he asked me if I cleaned the sheets in our spare room, because Jims mom stayed here last a few weeks ago. Like I wouldn't wash the sheets. He kills me! So, yes, he's being as nice as he can be. hahaha!

message 1420: by Leea (last edited May 10, 2012 04:54PM) (new)

Leea Both boys has performances today at school and I was rushing back and forth to make them. They were so cute! Ethan say a Tree song for the mayor in this Arbor Day Celebration at the park right next to his school and Garrett was a Tiger in his Carnival celebration for preschool. I'll have to post some picture in TPR.

They are both getting so big and growing up :)

message 1421: by Regina (last edited May 10, 2012 04:57PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) I say don't wash the sheets next time. :)

message 1422: by Leea (new)

Leea Yeah, that'll teach him. He already thinks I treat him like 'dirt' hahaha! He used to always come over on Wednesday because he knew that was the night I had my late Pilates class. lol!

message 1423: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Sounds like that was better for everyone! LMAO.

D.G. I say don't wash the sheets next time. :)

LMAO!!!

message 1425: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Happy that I finally read a good historical - Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage (Highland Pleasures, #2) by Jennifer Ashley . Super fun. Also read The Countess (Madison Sisters #1) by Lynsay Sands which wasn't bad.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments So, I've been picking up and putting down books like crazy and can't seem to find anything that really clicks. Then last night I started Fallen from Grace by Laura Leone and all I can say is wow. This actually takes Damaged Goods to a whole new level and I thought that book was really fantastic.

message 1427: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Fallen from Grace is really good. I liked it a lot.

message 1428: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just bought it from Amazon/kindle. There seems to be a variety of bad covers for it. My library has it in paperback and that cover sucks and the cover on Amazon sucks.

Fallen from Grace by Laura Leone Fallen from Grace by Laura Leone Fallen From Grace (Five Star Expressions) by Laura Leone

message 1429: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Have you read my review, Regina? That's the first thing I mention. :)

And I've had tons of discussions about those horrible covers. I cannot believe they ALL could be so bad in their own way! (The first one he looks like a stripper and in the last one he looks like a corpse...what's up with those arms?)

message 1430: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just did, lol!!!! Hahha, about the last one - -very true.

Kelly ~ happily oblivious | 102 comments LOL. I totally agree that the covers are bad. The middle one isn't so bad with the belly. But, I thought the sillouette was totally stalkerish.

Thoughtless (Thoughtless, #1) by S.C. Stephens kinda fits in with that, the heroine makes some crappy choices.

message 1433: by Leea (new)

Leea I know this is the What are you reading thread but it's also a free for all sometimes... So, forgive me for posting this here but I read this Mans blog and thought some of you might find it funny and interesting like I did.

http://theromanceman.net/blog/2012/2/...

What do you think?

message 1434: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments That's awesome, Leea. I love how he's man enough and ok with himself to admit these things. Especially being married for so long and finding different ways to better himself and love his wife.

message 1435: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I finished Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins and I really liked it. It was just as good as Anna. I wonder who the author will write about next.

message 1436: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I have that onelined up! I am how you liked it.

message 1437: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Katy, the next book is going to be Isla and the Happily Ever After. Isla was someone from Anna and the French Kiss.

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments Hello ladies! I just finished reading Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James . I see what the hype is all about. What a great book. I can't wait to read the other 2.

I also finished Visions of Heat (Psy-Changeling, #2) by Nalini Singh for a group read.

Now I am not sure what to read. I am thinking about possibly starting Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver . I have heard great things about this series.

message 1439: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read Never Resist Temptation by Miranda Neville Pretty good mix of romance, steaminess and the food element. But I'm getting tired of these "Oh no, how did I brush up against that effeminate male and get all tingly? Oh phew. It's a women." moments from the hero.

D.G. I'm reading River Of Fire (Fallen Angels, #6) by Mary Jo Putney , which is the only book in that series I haven't read. Going well so far and very interesting - the hero, the heroine AND her father are all artists. The only famous one is the father because women in the Regency weren't taken seriously as artists and the hero's father didn't think painting was a good occupation for his heir so he discouraged that. There have been lots of interesting convos about art so far and there's a mystery too but well done.

I haven't be able to listen more of Faithful Place (Dublin Murder Squad, #3) by Tana French . Maybe I'll listen some tonight as I'm trying to steam my clothes.

message 1442: by Leea (new)

Leea I started Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers #1) by Sarah MacLean I'm about 4 chapters in and I really like how it's building.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Tellulah wrote: "Read Never Resist Temptation by Miranda Neville Pretty good mix of romance, steaminess and the food element. But I'm getting tired of these "Oh no, how did I brush up against that effeminate male and get ..."

So he was assuming the woman was really a girly man?

message 1444: by Caitlyn (new)

Caitlyn (caitlynj) I have been reading The Mammoth Book Of Paranormal Romance 2 by Trisha Telep and I expect that these anthologies can be a bit of a mixed bag but so far they've all fallen a bit flat.
I started last night Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon I have heard so many mixed reviews that I hadn't planned on reading any time soon but stumbled across it and decided to give it a go.

You'll find tons of Outlander fans in this group so we'll tell you it's awesome but we also know it's not for everybody. You'll only know if you try it (just note that the first book starts a bit slow.)

message 1446: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Well said DG. The first 50 pages or so I believe are slow?

message 1447: by Mercè (new)

Mercè (maidcc) Currently I'm reading Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver and it's pretty good. I'm halfway through the book.

D.G. Regina wrote: "Well said DG. The first 50 pages or so I believe are slow?"

I listened to the audio so I don't know how many pages, LOL! I know the first couple of hours were slow (I guess that translates to about 50-60 pages.)
