Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Carina, I think if you read HR you'd like it. There's a big difference between Historical Fiction and Historical Romance. So far, I think we've had you read books that were closer to HF than HR.

The reason why I've been bugging you to read Hathaways for what...2 years now? is because it's sort of on par with say a BDB type book (except for it's historical instead of pnr) where there's a bit of a story, then some obstacles, then a steamy hookup. And some humor!

M.A. Comley (melcom) | 7 comments I'm reading Donna Fasano's sweet romance, Merry-Go-Round at the moment. http://www.amazon.com/The-Merry-Go-Ro...

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments I decided to go with some light reading this weekend. I started Taking a Shot (Play by Play, #3) by Jaci Burton .

message 1104: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I finished White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black last night. Like Regina, the first half was slow but when it finally picked it, it was awesome. I like the uniqueness of the world, people and their abilities. I love the brilliance of what Cassel did w (view spoiler)

Now, I'm reading Where Passion Leads (Berkley - Faulkner, #1) by Lisa Kleypas . This is Lisa Kleypas' first book. I hope it's at least a little bit decent.

message 1105: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) The ending was crazy Kay! It was heartbreaking. I also loved the brilliance of it all.

I haven't seen that Kleypas book, I am interested in what you think about it.

I am almost done listening to Harvest Moon (Virgin River, #15) by Robyn Carr then I will listen to #2 in the Ruby Oliver series The Boy Book A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them (Ruby Oliver, #2) by E. Lockhart which I am excited to start! I have to work all day, but I don't half mind b/c I will be listening to these two books and likely a third. I am not sure what, maybe doing a combo of listening/reading Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride

message 1106: by Carina (new)

Carina I think I enjoyed Hold Me Closer even more than White Cat, Regina. (*gasp* Did I just say that? Yes, yes I did.)

message 1107: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Wow, then I am looking forward to starting it! I ended up starting the audio of A Bad Day for Scandal (Bad Day, #3) by Sophie Littlefield

I finished (and started) The Boy Book A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them (Ruby Oliver, #2) by E. Lockhart today and it is so so so good! I laughed at so many parts and thought -- yes! exactly! When I finish the Ruby Oliver series I plan on reading her other books, E. Lockhart is an amazing author.

message 1108: by Leea (new)

Leea I haven't read at all for the last 2 days but tomorrow I hope to finish White Cat and start Special Forces :)

message 1109: by Carina (new)

Carina It looks like I gave WC and HMCN the same rating, but WC would have probably been a 3-3.5 if not for the last half. Man, that last half was good. And HMCN was awesome from the get go. Hmm, I wonder why I didn't rate it higher than 4...

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) WC got a higher rating from me overall at first because it was one of the first halfway decent YA books I'd read with a male PoV. This was what, a year or two ago? (too lazy to check). If I'd read HMCN first, I would have rated it higher. But I did enjoy both books. WC is probably between a 3.5 to 4 for me now, whereas HMCN is between a 4 and 4.5

Either way, I'm glad to have read both. Same with Anna Dressed in Blood and Warm Bodies and a few other good books with male protags as leads. If I recommend one of those, I tend to recommend them all.

message 1111: by D.G. (last edited Apr 29, 2012 04:05AM) (new)

D.G. I have 5 books going at once and it's driving me bunkers. I need to get some focus.

message 1112: by Leea (new)

Leea I can only do one at a time. Don't know how you ladies read more than one book? It's impressive :).

message 1113: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments I agree Leea! I don't know how you ladies do it. I can handle 2 books at once but they have to be different genres or I will confuse myself. More power to you ladies. I envy you. If I can read those many books at once, it may actually help me make a dent in my TBR list. Lol!

message 1114: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I am not reading at all, I have two very sick kids -- one of them going on her third day (so she is really grouchy), so these kids are running me ragged.

message 1115: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments Sorry to hear that Regina. Hope they feel better soon.

message 1116: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Awww, Regina! Sorry about that. :) I hope they get better soon.

All the books I have going are different genres: On the Origin of Species (science), Crossed (YA dystopia), Bit by the Bug (contemp. romance), To Kill a Mockingbird (lit. fiction) & Death Comes to Pemberley (historical mystery.)

I finished Bit by the Bug, which was very average...funny parts but the relationship was 'meh'. I'm thinking to stop listening Death Comes to Pemberley because it started nice but it has turned out really boring. I don't know if to DNF it or just give it a chance in print where I can go faster.

I'm also almost done with Crossed, To Kill a Mockingbird and On The Origin of Species. I've read a little of each book today and I hope to finish at least one.

message 1117: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Funny, but maybe not -- a book I just finished and loved (Breakfast at Tiffany's) I just learned the author of that book, Truman Capote was very close friends with Harper Lee. In fact Harper Lee acted as Truman's research assistant for Capote's In Cold Blood

message 1118: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Yes, I knew and I've been meaning to tell you. :) PBS had a documentary on Harper Lee recently and my husband saw it. It turns out that the character of "Dill" was based on Truman Capote - it seems they were childhood friends.

I'm going to see the documentary as soon as I finish the book.

message 1119: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm adding In Cold Blood to my TBR and I may read it soon.

message 1120: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Let me know when. Catie and I plan on doing a buddy read sometime in the future.

Very cool! Do you remember the name of the doc?

D.G. Regina wrote: "Let me know when. Catie and I plan on doing a buddy read sometime in the future."

Cool! I'll definitely join you.

Tellulah - The documentary is called 'Hey Boo' :) You can watch it on PBS's website. See link below:

Oh, I'm so sorry. I hope they feel better soon so you can get some much needed rest.

I didn't know that. That is so interesting. To kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. I reread it a few years ago and it took more away from it now that i'm older.

message 1126: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Are we supposed to be reading Special Forces? Or was that postponed? I'm jsut wanting to make sure I'm up on whats going on, haha.

message 1127: by Leea (new)

Leea I started Special Forces - Soldiers (Special Forces, #1) by Marquesate . I read the first 2 chapters...

Regina and Wendy, did you start yet? You want me to make a thread for us to discuss?

message 1128: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I started it too. Actually, I'm addicted! I'm about 33% in.

A thread would be a good idea, so we're not caught up in this one.

message 1129: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I want to start but my kids are so darned needy! Lol.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Darn those needy kids. It's as if they don't know anything about priorities. :p

message 1131: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Haha. :) they are yelling for hugs now (what is it about fevers?).

message 1132: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LOL! Kids will definitely get in the way, it's why evolution made them so damn cute.

message 1133: by Leea (last edited Apr 29, 2012 04:07PM) (new)

Leea Wendy... how did you get so far?

My kids are not sick but they are SO needy today. We were playing out back and I got they bought me this lounge/reading chair for my birthday and I didn't sit in it once... Demanding little beasts :)

Here is the link so we can chat about Special Forces

message 1134: by Leea (new)

Leea Even when my boys have a 102 fever they are non stop - it's a trip. haha! Love them up while they still want hugs, Regina :)

message 1135: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'll go post over in the special forces thread...

message 1136: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) What a nice gift Leea, hopefully you will get to use it. And Wendy you are so right. They are cute to manipulate us!

Yeah, I need to love them up while I can.

message 1137: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) So A Bad Day for Scandal (Bad Day, #3) by Sophie Littlefield starts off so good and so funny -- with references to spanx and longing for spiked coffee. I just love Stella (the MC). And it looks like she is going to finally get some!

I am also 50% in to an arc I am reading for a Tuesday release/review and I don't want to stop, it is really good: The Killing Moon (Dreamblood, #1) by N.K. Jemisin this author has a way of writing high fantasy -- it is very approachable and obviously written by a woman. I think I prefer fantasy written by a woman. For example, the river through the city is called "The goddess's blood", which I think is pretty funny.

message 1138: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Another thing, she doesn't set her fantasy books in old Europe, which is a refreshing take. She uses inspirations from various Africa and Asia cultures. So it is a completely new take. Not that I don't like European inspired fantasy (like GoT or LoTR), but this is nice for a change.

message 1139: by Leea (new)

Leea I just have to read the Bad Day Series. I love the covers and they sound so fun!

message 1140: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read Bared to You (Crossfire, #1) by Sylvia Day Super steamy but I missed having things like witty banter, sexual tension, a plot...

message 1141: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Finally I finished Crossed. A really mediocre book.

Next I'm reading either River Of Fire or Her Ladyship's Companion.

message 1142: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I finished Where Passion Leads (Berkley - Faulkner, #1) by Lisa Kleypas and it was ok. I saw pieces of the Lisa Kleypas we know today but it was slow at times. Also, there's a scene in the 2nd chapter where the heroine (minor spoiler) (view spoiler)

I'm not sure what to read next. I'm in search for something that will blow me away.

Regina, how is the Bad Day series? Is there romance or is it straight crime solving?

message 1143: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) It is definitely not romance, but there is talk about sex (two women crime solve together) and the main character is attracted to someone and he is attracted to her but there has been no hook up yet. It is more about the characters, their interactions and relationships with each other, and then some side passion.

message 1144: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Ouch about that spoiler.

message 1145: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments ok, thanks, regina. I already added the first book to my list.

message 1146: by Leea (new)

Leea I don't want to read that (about LK book). Ugh!

Still slowly reading Special Forces. It's really good!

I plan on reading the Bad Day Series soon.

message 1147: by D.G. (new)

D.G. That book was written in the 80s and that was pretty popular in the bodice rippers back then.

Maybe that's why LK doesn't want that book to be re-issued even though fans have been asking her.

message 1148: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I have heard the theory that publishers required that to be in books. Anyone know if that is true?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Tellulah wrote: "Read Bared to You (Crossfire, #1) by Sylvia Day Super steamy but I missed having things like witty banter, sexual tension, a plot..."

Completely agree. Definitely not one of the better romances or erotica I've read. Not really understanding why it's getting so much hype. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great either.

message 1150: by D.G. (last edited Apr 30, 2012 05:20PM) (new)

D.G. Regina wrote: "I have heard the theory that publishers required that to be in books. Anyone know if that is true?"

Maybe it was. I'd like to talk to somebody old enough who read romance back then. Theu must have seen it in a different way because how else would they keep reading about it?
