The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Thank you, Johnathan. I'm just getting warmed up! Even as I look over the list there are some that I forgot and wanted to add. And there's the Fantasy books.

I might point out that the Coyote Series by Allen Steele is really interesting, and generally scientifically accurate. It's told through different people in short stories or Novelas that fit together to make a novel. Its and interesting style.

but I digress, I'm glad you liked the list.

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments No problem. I'm adding a shortened version to the main list and then if people desire they can read down and see what you have meticulously put together. I love how Goodreads allows us to share favourite books with others and appreciate what various people think about books.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Works for me. I'll post a Fantasy list here soon, then go back for list 2 of Sci-fi.

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 136 comments How did I miss this list??? It's pretty fantastic and only getting better.

The only things that I would really add would be a few series that people could use to lighten the mood a bit so to speak. Some great humorous fantasy series to possibly include are:

The Ethshar Series by Lawrence Watt-Evans
Magic Kingdom of Landover Series by Terry Brooks
Myth Adventures Series by Robert Asprin

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Ah thanks for that a lot!

message 56: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I would add Philip Jose Farmers Dayworld series also Terry Brooks series Word and Void series

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Did I miss Robert E. Howard's Conan series & Karl Edward Wagner's Kane series? Both wrote great heroic fantasy. Howard should certainly be represented in the Classics. I did see ERB's Barsoom series listed there.

Silverlock by John Myers Myers, H. Warner Munn's 'Merlin's Godson' duology, & The Worm Ouroboros should also be on the classics list.

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments I'll put them up later. I've a little to catch up with in Goodread's world!

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 191 comments Given my debut novel Conditioned Response (A Phoenician Series Novel) by Marjorie F. Baldwin was this group's Secondary read in June, might I add it to the list?

I should also note that I was selected as Author of the Month for October by another group here on Goodreads so I slashed its price down to $.99 (yep, 99 cents!) for October. Of course, I'm raising the price back up to $6.99 on Friday, Nov. 2nd but I think Amazon and Barnes & Noble and some of the other stores (Sony, DIesel, Kobo, etc.) might take a while to propagate the price hike back in so you probably have more than a day or two if you want to get it on the cheap.

Note also that starting in August, 2012 I joined RABMAD (Read a Book, Make a Difference) and committed to donating 10% of all proceeds to Team X-TREME, a military veteran support group. See my RABMAD page for deets.

Mitsy (mitsyc) Great list. I have one book to add. It's both sci-fi and fantasy. Prepare by Geoffrey Germann . I think it's perfect for this group to read.

Could be added to Humorous SF&F:

Redshirts by John Scalzi Redshirts

The Android's Dream by John Scalzi The Android's Dream

Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi Agent to the Stars

The Dragon and the George (Dragon Knight, #1) by Gordon R. Dickson The Dragon and the George

To Say Nothing of the Dog (Oxford Time Travel, #2) by Connie Willis To Say Nothing of the Dog

The Swords of Lankhmar (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, #5) by Fritz Leiber The Swords of Lankhmar (and other Fafhrd & Grey Mouser stories)

A Spell for Chameleon (Xanth, #1) by Piers Anthony A Spell for Chameleon (and other Xanth books).

Also, The Color of Magic (and other Discworld books) & The Stainless Steel Rat (and sequels), already on SF list, should probably both be located under humorous SF&F, cause they are!

Fair notice: I have an odd sense of humor.

Sorry, Jonathan, the summary at the top is your post, so it's up to you to edit it in perpetuity! (I took a look at the group Bookshelf, and it does allow custom lists, so I'm going to experiment if I could transfer some of these titles to a "Group Suggestions" list that could still be displayed by members, or otherwise create a list more than one person could keep updated. Sadly, Listopia can't restrict access to just group members.

Stef | 56 comments Thank you for this very extensive list. I would have a new suggestion for it:
Malevil Malevil by Robert Merle

message 70: by R.L. (new)

R.L. Stedman | 21 comments This is an awesome list. Thank you. Great to see many old favorites as well as new treats to try out.

May I humbly suggest Neal Stephenson's Reamde? If you are into sic-fi/fantasy epics its a wonderful take-off of the whole genre, as well as a random foray into modern cyber-terrorism.

And I know a list like this will never be complete but ... not even one William Gibson?

Oh sorry! was skimming and must have missed. Not his best, though. In my opinion, of course...

I didn't like it too much either but I haven't read any of his others.

message 75: by Audrey Spencer (new)

Audrey Spencer | 1 comments I really love the new book series called The Alterran Legacy Series. Book 1 is Colony Earth and book 2 just came out which is Khamlok. This series is very imaginative and will leave you with wanting more. Everyone should check it out, the authors name is Regina M Joseph.

Jake | 5 comments Don't know if you consider these classics, but the trilogy of 'Jon Shannow, the Jerusalem Man' by David Gemmell are some of my favorite books from my childhood :-)

message 80: by Ian (new)

Ian | 2 comments I know it is a little late but has anyone looked at NPR's list.
http://www.npr.org/2011/08/11/1390858...
I also would like to suggest the Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell.

Froxis wrote: "I know it is a little late but has anyone looked at NPR's list."

Hi, Froxie.

Yup, we even have a copy of the NPR 100 pinned in the Recommendations folder.

I like the Lost Fleet series, too. I'm waiting for Perilous Shield this October (tho I prefer the Geary novels to the Lost Stars spin-off series.)

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

What a wonderful list!

Humorous sci fi - if ever you manage to lay your hands on Stanislaw Lem's Tales of Pirx the Pilot and More Tales of Pirx the Pilot, it's absolutely side-splitting albeit with a hearty dose of horror. Imagine the combination! I can't recommend it enough.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

My reading list;
Reaping The Harvest, Michael R. Hicks

Captains Courageous, Rudyard Kipling

Quarter Share, Nathan Lowell

Retreat and Adapt, Thomas DePalma

The Expanse, Ryk Brown
