Please help! This shouldn't be too hard as I think its a classic children's book..

Its about a boy (I think) who gets transported into a large tree, possibly an Australian species of tree. I remember it as a very calm read and it could well be Australian.

Are you sure it was a tree? Or could it have been... a giant peach? ("James and the Giant Peach" was a classic by Raold Dahl.)

No, it was a tree, possibly in a park. Maybe a Morton Bay Fig!

It wasn't classic in the Dahl sense, but just very popular. I would say late 1980s-early 1990s.

Was it a short story by Australian author Paul Jennings? I remember reading about a boy and two old men who fought and there was a tree. But it was funny, not a calm story.

This is probably a stretch, but there is a children's book called Once Under A Cherry Blossom Tree where an old miser swallows a cherry pit and then a tree grows out of his head. There is a big struggle to remove it from his head, and when it's finally yanked out, there is a hole in his head that becomes filled with rainwater and fish, and eventually he turns into a pond with a cherry tree growing alongside. It's got lovely Japanese-style illustrations.
