message 551: by Iris (new)

Iris (ipro) | 277 comments Finished Beastly today. I don't usually read YA, I have issues with the maturity level of the characters, obviously since they're usually teenagers in that type of book. However, I found myself really enjoying this. Ofcourse I couldn't help but compare it to the movie since I took my niece to see it when it was released, but I really enjoyed it. YA but with a lesson learned in the end. Would definitely recommend it. As a matter of fact I'm passing it on to my niece next. 5 Stars

Beastly by Alex Flinn

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Sara,
I finished my second and last pick: The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook. It took me a little bit to get into it, but I really liked this book. I like the steampunk genre with it's world building and unique characters. I enjoyed most of the characters. I loved the chemistry between Rhys and Mina and I loved the ending.

message 567: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments I finished another of my recommendations - The Girl Who Played With Fire. I liked the storyline, but found it kind of hard to follow with all the names and locations that were foreign to me. That must not have bothered me too much though - I've already started the third book in the series! :)

message 568: by Grace (new)

Grace (bookslikebreathing) | 102 comments 3. (Not So) Sweet 16: Rebecca 4/5--Really loved this one. I've held off on reading du Maurier even though I have all of her books but I may have to play catchup now

4. The lights are on, but nobody's home: Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis 5/5--Very sweet story. I've loved the majority of this series and this one was no different.

5. Elite 8: The Help 2/5--I had to struggle a bit with this one. I heard so much hype about it but sadly it just wasn't for me.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier Simply Irresistible (Lucky Harbor, #1) by Jill Shalvis The Help by Kathryn Stockett

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments Lacy wrote: "Hi Karen,

It's really hard for me to say, Lacy, for a couple of reasons. One is that I read the first book and listened to the audio of the second (and working on the third) so the comparison isn't exact, and the other is that I read the first one over a year ago and the details are a little fuzzy. I think the second one was probably harder for me to follow though - I know the third book is easier than the second.

Also, the first book is self-contained, the second and third books run together so much that they could very easily have been published as one book. In fact, except for the length, I would have liked it better if they were combined!

That is what I thought too Karen. I know that is not how they were written, but that is how it read to me. Like the first book was so well received that the author filled it out to become a trilogy.

I love the cover of The Novice. How was it?

I'm not sure I can start 'The Thief' this month, unless it fits the Bingo Shelf challenge I'm doing in another group. Can I contact you on Saturday evening? (That's when they announce shelves for the week.)

I'm doing that challenge too, it's really fun, yes?

I think you would enjoy the trilogy D.G., The Novice is the second book. It's similar to The Name of The Wind because it deals with a character who learns about magic in an University setting then goes on to have many adventures. The writing isn't as beautiful and lyrical but the worldbuilding is solid, the story develops seemlessly and there are lots of interesting characters. I'm reading book 3 now.:)

Yes, lots of fun! Too bad I didn't think of contacting you to read "The Thief" for the 'magic' shelf! Anyhow, it we can't read it this month, what do you say to reading it in April? It happens to fit another group challenge I'll be doing in April so it will be perfect there. :)

Christine | 955 comments Cheryl - I finished The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson and Wow! What an emotional journey that book was. I almost put it down, but I'm glad I stuck with it, as I just loved it by the end. Thanks for recommending it. Even though it was on my to-read shelf, I probably never would have gotten around to it without this prompting.
