Valerie Zambito I would like to nominate Theft of Swords by Michael Sullivan. The twists, the turns, and humorous dialogue had me captivated from the beginning.Theft of Swords

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, Dragons of Autumn Twilight! The first real series I ever read in fantasy. I would certainly reread that one. Tanis, Strum, Flint, Raistlin, Tasslehoff, sign me up.d Also real interested in The Dragon's Path, voted for that one the last few times. Gonna be hard to pick between the two.

Oliver Neubert (Oliver_Neubert) I recommend Genesis by Bernard Beckett

Since we're reading that in our sister group, I don't think it qualifies. You can join the discussion there. http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3...

Same here! Raistlin is one of my all time favorite characters

Seconder.

message 60: by KiraMichelle (new)

KiraMichelle I second the Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore

message 61: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I'm pretty sure A Wrinkle in Time is scifi. Sorry. Last time I checked, this was the FANTASY BOOK CLUB.

According to the book link you supplied, more 3 times as many people have it shelved as fantasy as SF or even YA.

message 63: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Hmm. Well, I read it with my kids and thought it was scifi.

message 64: by Laurel (new)

Laurel *high fives Maurice*!!!

message 65: by Lara (new)

Lara | 84 comments I'll support the nomination for Graceling

message 66: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments So what do you all think about A Wrinkle in Time? Shall we include it or not? Fantasy or scifi?

message 67: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I'd say let it take its chances.

message 68: by Nick (new)

Nick I'll be the 3rd one for George R.R. Martin's Fevre Dream. Its an older book but plenty good.

message 69: by Ana-Maria (new)

Ana-Maria (leo_amabi) I'd like to nominate The Bone Doll's Twin. Also, I agree with Joseph on letting A Wrinkle in Time take its chances.

message 70: by Michael (last edited Feb 17, 2012 12:42AM) (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) I've been interested in reading Cook's Black company so I'll second that... As for nominations, how about:

The Emperor's Knife by Mazarkis Williams

It is an amazing book, well worth reading. I'll second it.

I also vote for this book, I never finished the book due to hating the characters. It's sitting alongside my bed begging for attention.

S.A. (sa_garcia) | 9 comments Ysmalan wrote: "I nominate Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin. Had it on my shelf for ages!"

It's a wonderful book. If we don't want to concentrate on a series, this book deserves to be read. This is the book that hooked me on GRRM so long ago. It's a splendid take on the vampire genre.

message 75: by Vladimir (new)

Vladimir (kravinoff) I support Fevre Dream. It's an oldie but goldie.

message 76: by Jim (last edited Feb 17, 2012 03:23AM) (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "So what do you all think about A Wrinkle in Time? Shall we include it or not? Fantasy or scifi?"

I'd say it's fantasy enough. It has some 'sort of' SF elements, but (view spoiler) To me, that just says fantasy.

Also, haven't we always gone on what most people on GR have the book shelved as? In this case, that's overwhelmingly fantasy.

message 77: by Therese (new)

Therese (n4turally_me) Graceling as first please!!!

message 78: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Would someone be ambitious enough to list the books nominated and seconded so far? I have to work today and we're getting quite a lot and I'd like to close nominations soon. Chocolate chip cookies for the volunteer!

message 79: by Ben (new)

Ben (bstanley52) Jim wrote: "Also, haven't we always gone on what most people on GR have the book shelved as?"

Playing devil's advocate here... by that logic Dragonflight should be a fantasy book. Though the author herself considers it sci-fi, which is how another book club on GR has shelved it (they didn't include it in the top 100 fantasy books of all time because of that).

Sandra - I'll list the books. It's that or work out. :) Back in a little while with the list.

message 81: by Ysmalan (last edited Feb 17, 2012 06:36AM) (new)

Ysmalan I already made one (procrastinating on my thesis ;-) ), but it can't hurt to compare in case I forgot something.

Nominated and seconded so far:

Graceling by Kristin Cashore
After the Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn
The Dragon's Path by Daniel Abraham
The Traitor's Daughter by Paula Brandon
Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin
Ex-Heroes by Peter Clines
Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis
The Steel Queen by Karen Azinger
The Desert of Souls by Howard Andrew Jones
Donnerjack by Roger Zelazny
The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima
Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher
The Darkness That Comes Before by R. Scott Bakker
Shadow and Claw by Gene Wolfe
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
The Black Company by Glen Cook

I felt free to ignore Mythica: Genesis, even though it has been nominated three times (instead of being seconded at least once). All three nominators seemingly joined the Club for the sole purpose of nominating this book, which I find suspect. Of course, if this is not against the rules, it can still be included.

message 83: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Ben, that's why I gave up being fussy about genres decades ago. Too many books are on the line, many of my favorites, in fact. Some swear that any SF book with faster than light travel is fantasy & that SF is just a subgenre of fantasy.

message 84: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Oh, mercy! Now I have a 3 way tie as Maggie listed them and sent me a message! I'll be broke buying chocolate chip cookies! Thank you all sooo much.

I too find that suspect. Although it's not against the rules. But if it's not seconded.... Hmmm.

message 86: by Tish (new)

Tish | 46 comments I figured two nominations = 1 nomination + 1 second done by new people not familiar with the system. However, if they just joined the group in order to push a particular book...

Anyway, no need for actual cookies--it's the thought that counts! :)

As far as SF vs fantasy, I like the term 'speculative fiction' as it covers it all. Seems to me that a lot of sci-fi is pretty fantastic, but a lot of what we consider fantasy is not at all sci-fi. I like 'em all and don't worry about genre.

message 87: by Ysmalan (last edited Feb 17, 2012 07:58AM) (new)

Ysmalan Haha I also thought we're talking about virtual cookies (=thanks) here. No real point in sending real cookies around the whole globe just so I can gain a few more pounds! ;-)

Tish, I thought the same at first, but after the third very similar nomination from a "faceless" newbie I grew suspicious!

I also agree about speculative fiction. There are groups that cover both fantasy and SF in all its incarnations though. I personally love books that inhabit the "twilight zone" between genres; and I think a book with enough fantasy elements can well be discussed in a fantasy group, whether or not it's officially been declared fantasy. People still need to vote for it in any case. :)

No, its basically book one of a in between book/series he is writing between the two other trilogy he is going to write for the series. The3 second trilogy is going to a urban fantasy set in today's world, then a science fiction series set in outer space. The second trilogy is not coming out until after the second book in the Stormlight Archive series is published, which I think wouldn't be until at least sometimes next year or even later in the future.

But are those of us who haven't read the series going to understand what is going on in this "crossover"?
